discover yangon LOCAL PEOPLE, LOCAL PRODUCTS Old-Style Wheat Noodles The Kin Chang Hin noodle shop has been here for a hundred years, and it certainly looks like it. With antique machines, the ten employees work twenty-four hours a day to produce hundreds of 17kg and 50kg bags of three different varieties of wheat noodle. The shop is run by Lu Lu and has been passed down through three generations from the Chinese grandfather who originally immigrated here from Xinjia in mainland China. Lu Lu has taken over from his father only in the last year. The noodles are dried in large shallow round bamboo trays and sold over the counter, wholesale and retail. Location; No. 150, 17th Street (btw. Mahabandoola Road and Merchant Road) Local People, Local Products is curated and written by Yangon Walking Tours and will soon be available on the recently launched iDiscover Yangon Travel App. [http://i-discoverasia.com/portfolio_category/yangon/]

Credit to Nam Dao Kham
Michelin Star Shan Noodle Soup Nam Dao Kham BY CLIFF LONSDALE WHAT IT IS The Hledan area of Kamayut Township is popular for many reasons. Some visitors are drawn there by the trendy fashion shops, or the fresh foods and flowers available at the sprawling open air market. Students head there for the exciting nightlife, and fabulous street food. Those in the know brave the hustle, bustle and traffic of Hledan to visit a tiny nondescript Shan restaurant tucked away behind Sein Gay Har Supermarket. ATMOSPHERE Nang Phoung Kham, the owner, greets her customers with a huge smile, she knows all her regulars by their first name, remembers their favourite foods, and is quietly building a strong following amongst foodies in Yangon. She serves the best Shan Khauk Swe in the city. A plastic seat is vacated and I sit and wait for the first course, my table immediately cleared and cleaned. The restaurant is meticulously clean. A fish tank provides the only entertainment as I wait for my meal. RECOMMENDATIONS The duo of sticky stodgy dumplings that arrive first are a delight, wrapped in banana leaves and speckled throughout with the green of spring onions they are as beautiful as they are filling and tasty. The fresh crispy bite of the onion carves its way through the glutinous texture of the rice flour dumpling. At Nam Dao Kham the Papaya Salad is perfect and elegantly presented. There is an incredible complexity to its flavour, and the dichotomy between sweet and sour are supervised effectively by a level of spice that is sufficient to draw an intake of breath but still a long way away from muting the taste buds. A fresh juice is ordered to quench my burning desires. Avocado Juice is the just the thing I need. Of course the Shan Khauk Swe is the grand-finale, and it tastes wonderful. The best in town! FINAL THOUGHTS: Nang Phoung Kham returned to Myanmar a couple of years ago to establish her restaurant, and brought with her a wealth of experience from her years working at a Michelin starred restaurant in London, UK. And although she’s a long way off being included in that famous guide (though she definitely would qualify for a Bib Gourmand), which is incredible when you consider that the bill for my three course meal is less than 4000 Ks. 10-12, Zay Yar Street, Hledan, Kamayut Township. | 09 525 2435

Tapas and Wine
Le Cellier @ Novotel Yangon Max BY NIKITA BLACK WHAT IT IS Le Cellier Wine Bar and French Restaurant is set on the 14th floor of the Novotel. It hosts two conceps: a relaxed wine and tapas bar, as well as a more refined French restaurant. The seating areas range from a terrace overlooking the Shwedagon Pagoda to private rooms, large and small. ATMOSPHERE We sat outside to enjoy the view. Evening time from Thursday to Sunday, DJs play sets which start with the latest Pop hits and gradually turn to nightclub beats. Good if you are there with friends for some loud fun and chatter, not do good if you plan to impress a date. RECOMMENDATION You can choose either à la carte Tapas and wines or go for the set menus. The sets (US$20 regular; US$30 with sparkling) include one glass of wine and two tapas. Note that here, Tapas comes in large sizes, with an average of five pieces per dish, for croquetas, blinis, foie gras etc. These are made for sharing. We ordered quite a few tapas, hot and cold. We kicked off the meal with refreshing Smoked Salmon Blinis (US$15). These were very well balanced and opened up our taste buds. The tapas after this were excellent, especially the very tasty, crispy and creamy Chorizo Croquetas (US$8). The Saffron Risotto (US$12) was undercooked, which was a shame given that it came with prawns to die for, with the fumé taste of just barbecued seafood. The Potato Salad (US$5) was disappointing and lacked the garnishing stated in the menu, while the Brie en Croûte/Brie Cheese in Puff Pastry (US$15) was well presented, though overpowered by the apples. We finished off with a classic Cheese Platter (US$20), which we parcelled-up, as we were fully saited. The wines (US$10 per glass) were up to the mark and the range on offer is wide. We closed the meal with a strong espresso. FINAL THOUGHTS The tapas side of Le Cellier has a good base but must improve to justify its prices. Most of the tapas were dished out at the same time, but the service was very slow (over 40 minutes). Perhaps a bit of decoration on the tables would also add to the atmosphere! 459 Pyay Road, Kamaryut Township, Yangon. Ph: 01 2305858 Opening Hours: 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm and 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm
