Plant House
Near the Kachin Baptist Church in Sanchaung is The Plant House, a cute and reasonably priced café that has been kept busy since opening its doors a few months ago. In what is basically a converted living room, the owners have carpeted the floor with fake grass and decorated the sidewall with a slightly kitsch plastic ‘jungle flower’ wallpaper. Customers sit cross-legged on the floor at one of two tables, or on a long bench that runs past three tables, which sport flower pots. The entrance— also adorned in pots—has a small seating space too. The owners have even found space for a stand of local produce—May Myo drip coffee; essential oils; soy candles; Tree Food fruit snacks, and coffee scrub that promises to give your skin a much-needed caffeine boost. This relentless use of space is echoed in the clammy (but seemingly hygienic) kitchen, where frantic cooking invites a ‘we invited too many guests’ vibe. It also has a small adjoining toilet. The friendly team brings out complimentary herbal tea and offers a range of hot coffee (cuppa’ their signature is 1,000 kyats, Americano 2,200 kyats, espresso 1,500 kyats) and iced coffee (from 2,000-3,500 kyats). They also have noncaffeine drinks such as soda and tea (their signature tea is 2,000 kyats). The fact that the cafe is without Wi-Fi probably adds to its social and homely feel, and gives customers the focus to work their way through the economical menu. Toast spread with sugary delights such as Nutella and jam cost between 800-1,500 kyats (there’s also an intriguing apple mayo spread). Fruit bowls are 2,000 kyats and something more substantial is the Myanmar traditional fare—eggs, rice are about 1,200 kyats, noodle dishes are 2,000 kyats and the chickpea or chicken curries and khaw pote aren’t going to break the bank either. Address: Nyaung Tone St, Sanchaung Tsp, Yangon Opening hours: 9am-9pm, closed Mondays Telephone: 09 798 883355
They have good ambience for one to come and drink coffee or read a book. I liked their Tofu Nway. While leaving,... John S www.sarmal.com.mm

review
Marco’s Cellar I had been bemoaning the lack of a decent wine bar in downtown Yangon over the last year, so was thrilled to see Marco’s Cellar open in a heritage building on Merchant Road a couple of months ago. My first visit did not disappoint: Marco serves up a large variety of wines handpicked by a sommelier based in Singapore. To line the stomach, the menu boasts a good variety of fairly reliable and reasonably-priced western dishes. I would go back for the wine, and stay for the food. Marco’s wine list is vast. With bottles from around the world you’re likely to find some old favourites as well as something new to try. There’s only a handful available by the glass (around 7,000 kyats) so best to get a group of friends together if you want to try a couple of bottles. I started with the Cape Dreams Sauvignon Blanc—a crisp clear white wine that was perfectly refreshing for a sultry Yangon evening. The Huma Four Seasons Pinot Noir was rich and full bodied. I also sampled the Chateau Chapron Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which was lighter than the pinot, but also scrumptious. The cheese plate made for a decent accompaniment. At 8,000 kyats, it’s reasonable for Yangon and had some tasty strong cheddar and blue cheese. The mozzarella and brie were, however, fairly tasteless. The bruschetta (3,500 kyats) was reassuringly standard – ripe juicy tomatoes atop a crispy crunchy baguette slice. It could have done with more garlic, good quality olive oil, and perhaps a little more fresh herbs. The truffle fries (3,500 kyats) were a bit cardboard-tasting but the punchy garlic mayo made up for that. For mains, the the baked fish fillet (9,000 kyats) was not overly fresh tasting but came with a good tomato and cheese topping. The oven roasted chicken (11,000 kyats) was served with a punchy wine sauce and herby roasted vegetables. The penne al funghi (8,500 kyats) was deliciously creamy. Marco’s should become a downtown go-to for wine lovers. The sophisticated environment, with a lot of the wine bottles on display, natural wooden tables and good lighting, is the perfect place to peruse the impressive wine list and indulge in a tipple. The food is reasonably priced and reasonablyflavoured—perhaps not a reason to visit in itself but good enough to turn an aperitif into a supper into a postprandial. Address: No. 499, Merchant Road, Yangon Opening Hours: 11am-11pm Phone: 09 789 499777
