PANSODAN: A MEETING POINT FOR ARTS BY BORBÁLA KÁLMÁN
Pansodan Street is a well-known Downtown intellectual axis. It’s also an indicator for fine-arts. Lokanat Galleries was the first to open in 1971; since Aung Soe Min and Nance Cunningham opened Pansodan Gallery in 2008, the street’s name became one with arts, and it’s almost two years now that the ‘sister space’, Pansodan Scene, welcomes visitors too. Both venues are located in old houses, a conscious choice of the owners to contribute to save heritage buildings and to help historical aspects of the city remain on the surface. It’s better to be aware of the much unexpected impact that Pansodan might have on those who step in the spaces. The unique atmosphere, combined with the forceful whirl of colours and motives carried by hundreds of contemporary canvases, not to mention the special messages that the randomly displayed old works and photographs, will surely not pass by unnoticed. Aung Soe Min has been collecting art for almost two decades. The idea to establish a gallery grew out of the will to mediate the unique talents of the Myanmar contemporary art scene he discovered to a larger audience. Pansodan represents a wide spectrum of artists: what counts, is the first interaction that the owner has with the works, they need to be able to ‘talk’. Nowadays, Pansodan partners with more and more international initiatives, while keeping a close eye on the Pansodan Journal, a printed tool to share art in two languages. Behind the Gallery’s contemporary façade hides a huge archive of wonders, but (yet) in an ‘uninventoried’ way: a collection of rarities that await the moment to form later in a small museum displaying the visual history of past times. Parallel to the crossing that the Gallery offers between past and present, Pansodan Scene acts as the cultural hub for different events: exhibitions of course, but also concerts while a series of documentary screenings and of talks about art are scheduled on a regular basis. Sunday is dedicated to the Drawing while Saturday to the Language Club, free and open to everyone. Luckily, the small Café is there to provide refreshments… Daily life at Pansodan is busy: the plan is to keep it that way! One of the next big events will be the Scene hosting one of the Yangon Photo Festival’s exhibition in February, but you can be quite sure to find some exciting happening anytime you visit!
