Religious BuildingS Guide
Exploring the diverse religions buildings in downtown Yangon provides insight into the rich tapestry of cultures in Myanmar, and unveils a side of the city rarely explored. These beautiful buildings reflect the mix of cultures in this city. We recommend to visit early in the morning when the markets are at their most vibrant and the temperatures are cooler. Walk the streets and enjoy!
SRI KALIMA HINDU TEMPLE The temple was built in 1871 by Tamil immigrants. Here, the Hindu goddess Kali is worshipped. Traditionally depicted in black, she is the fierce aspect of Durga, and at the centre, or shrine, of this mandir. Statues and paintings of Hindu deities adorn its colourful exterior, especially its roof. Burma’s Tamil community is believed to have numbered more than 200,000 before the Second World War, although it has since decreased substantially. Arrive before 10.30am or after 3.00pm. On Friday mornings free meals are provided for devotees and visitors. ? 295 Kone Zay Tan Street (Upper Block off Anawratha Road), Latha Township, Yangon
MESMEAH YESHUA SYNAGOGUE Built between 1893 and 1896, the Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue on 26th Street now serves the remaining 20 or so Jewish citizens of Yangon. MUGHAL SHIA MOSQUE On 30th Street in Pabedan township stands Yangon’s main Shiite mosque, Mogul Shia Mosque. It dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when in 1854, Indo-Persian merchant families built a house of worship here. The current structure was built in 1914 and remains largely intact in its original form today. There are approximately 20,000 Shia muslims in Myanmar. Shia mosques allow entry to both male and female visitors, if dressed appropriately. The building contains one of the few architectural domes still standing in Yangon. ? No. 91, 30th Street, Latha Township, Yangon
SUNNI JAMAH BENGALI MOSQUE On Sule Pagoda Road, this is one of Yangon’s largest mosques and popular with Muslim travellers due to its central location. The mosque was founded by immigrants from East Bengal, today’s Bangladesh, in the nineteenth century. The mosque is built in classical South Asian style, with its facade covered with colourful tiles and its minarets overlooking the central roundabout next to the Sule Pagoda. Many of Yangon’s mosques are in rather good shape and as active places of worship have frequently been renovated. ? 93 Sule Pagoda Road, Kyauktada Township, Yangon

ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL The Cathedral of St Mary the Virgin is Yangon’s main Roman Catholic church. It has a signature neo-Gothic style. It is perhaps the interior where St Mary sets itself apart, with its colourful bricks and stained glass windows. The cornerstone was laid in 1899, and the church was consecrated twelve years later, in 1911. Make sure you look at the beautiful plaster friezes of the ‘Stations of the Cross’ brought by ship all the way from Paris. ? 372 Bo Aung Kyaw Road, Botataung Township, Yangon

Fusion Recipes From Another Planet
Planet X Bakery & Restaurant BY VICKIE
WHAT IT IS A cheerful bakery and restaurant that serves fusion dishes, combining Western, European and Asian culinary traditions on single plates. The fusion concept is to provide a variety of flavours from around the world under one roof. Located at Yankin, the restaurant provides both indoor and outdoor seating to suit your needs. ATMOSPHERE The outdoor dining area, perhaps not so advantageous, what with the mosquitoes, is nevertheless perfect for an airy lunch date. A mini bar adds to the already stunning tropical dishes served in this fusion cuisine. Serene and homely, the indoor area also houses a bakery area, ready for desserts straight after your meal. RECOMMENDATIONS The steamy menu consists of tom yum, nasi goreng, pizzas, quesadillas and all that you can name on a typical Mexican/Spanish/Asian menu. The twist lies in the creativity and daring hands of the chef, who prepares the food with a dash of different traditions sprinkled over the dish. Must try recipes include the Pork and Roll Picked Tea, pork and bacon served together with Burmese pickled tea – it gives an edgy explosion of flavour in the mouth. Waterworld Fried Rice (6500 Ks) is a remarkable seafood & fried rice dish prepared with oil extracted from Burmese tiger prawns. The Chicken Nachos, and Garlic Prawns are each served with its own Asian flair and special homemade sauces, are totally worth trying. The restaurant is also popular for its Pizzas (@10,000 Ks) in a variety of authentic flavours on a page long menu, much to the liking of youngsters. FINAL THOUGHTS An extraordinary experience for sure! You can order unfamiliar names on the menu and expect to be astonished every time the food is served. Fascinating and original, the place is ideal especially the local menus are starting to bore you. Address: 6 Moe Kaung St., Yankin Township, Yangon Phone: 01 400 064, 01 541 585 | Opening Hours: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Finally, Excellent Makan From Singapore Merlion Cuisine BY VICKIE WHAT IT IS Merlion Cuisine serves authentic Singaporean dishes at the newly opened Myanmar Plaza. From freshly made soya bean juice to the luscious chicken-rice dish, the exquisite menu covers all the popular dishes and exceeds all expectations. ATMOSPHERE Offering a beautiful Inya Lake view on the side, Merlion Cuisine offers the best of its dishes from the six-star rating Ritz-Carlton hotel in Singapore. It is a formal dining restaurant where business people and families come for lunch or dinner. RECOMMENDATIONS Makan is a Malay word, widely used in Singapore to mean Eating. Cuisine in Singapore is greatly influenced by its neighbouring countries. So, the Singaporean dishes here are spicy, like the Fried Kankong, the sweet-like Egg Tofu and the mind-blowing Fresh Fish Meat Curry (US$16), which is the signature dish of the restaurant. This dish is carefully served in a clay pot, ready for two people – the magnificent red grouper, rich curry and various spices, gives a variety of sweet, sour and spicy tastes, all moulded into a delightful soup plate. The Hainannese Chicken Rice (US$7) is a must try for everybody. The chicken, roasted or steamed, is tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. It comes with a tasty bowl of rice and a soya sauce/ chilli sauce. The combo is beyond delicious. It is healthy comfort food indeed. The Egg Tofu (US$5-$10) is a heavenly dish, consists of freshly made stir-fried tofu. FINAL THOUGHTS The cuisine is one of the most top-notch in town, and offers quality dishes as well as a stunning view. Definitely a great first impression, and one that will make this the first restaurant I race to when I have a craving for some good Singaporean makan. Address: Myanmar Plaza, Level 3, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Township Tel: 09 979 519 009 | Opening Hours: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
