Babylon Coffee Garden: Myanmar Cuisine in Verdant Setting BY SAM FOOT & MALLIKA GUPTA Yangon’s newest ‘neo-Burmese’ coffee cafe combines a rewarding and authentic dining experience with a refreshingly serene and verdant interior. Located in heart of Yangon’s premier streetfood district, Babylon brings together classic regional dishes from across Myanmar in one accessible menu, making the cafe an ideal refuge for those wanting an introduction to the flavours of the country without having to brave Yangon’s multifarious street vendors. The food on offer is a simple yet refined celebration of Myanmar’s diverse regional fare. The ubiquitous, unctuous salads are here: a simple tea leaf; a charred, delicious eggplant; and, innovatively, a papaya salad unique to Babylon – a creation of Mr. Nanda unlike those you will taste in Thailand or, indeed, Myanmar itself. Alongside the various salads, diners can choose from four regionally styled ‘hta min’ – rice sets. Each individual set recreates the flavours of the particular region from which it hails – from a hint of tamarind in the Rakhine inspired plate, to the bean powder and sesame of the phon yegyee hta min – with each dish accompanied by a complementing meat side of fish, chicken or dried venison. For those not in the mood for rice dishes, the cafe also offers a selection of sticky, nutty Shan style noodle dishes and a range of familiar street snacks: samosas, the famous bayar kyaw fritter, sticky rice, and a platter of tempura which brings together the disparate deep fried options found up and down Yangon’s streets, namely: corn, shrimps, potato, marrow and greens. True to it’s positioning as a ‘Coffee Garden’, Babylon also has a comprehensive offering of (non-alcoholic) drinks. Customers may choose from a large range of fresh juices (including the house-special ‘Babylon’s Refreshment’, a sweet and smoky mix of coffee and cane juice), smoothies and mocktails, plus real coffee and Lat Phat Yae tea.
Address : No.182, Mahabandoola Park St, Kuauktada Tsp, Yangon, Myanmar. Ph:09 45888 4420 Opening Hours: 9:00AM — 9:00PM

Beer Factory: The Current Trendiest Beer Bar BY SOFIA RAINERI The Beer Factory x Attic from Malaysia is the newest bar in quiet Bahan neighbourhood. Although it has not had its grand opening yet, it’s already very popular. The industrial, modern look gives the place a relaxed atmosphere whilst still looking swanky. As its name suggest, it’s famous for “beer”. Unlike other bars around Yangon, alongside your typical beers (Myanmar, Tuborg, Carslberg and Yoma) The Beer Factory caters a few imported beers and ciders (such as Kaiserdom hefe 9,500MMK and Magners 7,500MMK). If beer is not your thing, the menu also offers and extensive range of cocktails (prices ranging from 4,500-5,000MMK. A must order cocktail is Mexican Bulldog (for sharing), a combination of margarita and corona. It’s very refreshing but can get you tipsy quickly as well. The Beer Bar is every beer drinker and meat eater’s dream. Beer and meat go hand in hand, and the menu perfectly complements the drinks, most dishes, if not all are meat based, and/or fried. I munched on flavoursome and juicy fried salted egg yolk chicken wings (6,500MMK), and some grilled soy pork belly (5,900MMK), tender and fatty pork belly with a delicious sweet soy glaze. They also offer pasta dishes, noodles, meat on a stick, fries and nachos, burgers and various cuts of meat. The staff is attentive, welcoming and knows how to get the crowd pumping especially when the other diners chug beer out of a beer bong while the whole bar claps and chants. Not to mention the fire waterfall shots, the hundreds of Jagerbombs, and the birthday special shot trays (all of the shots seem to have a fire component to them), this for sure makes a night to remember. The Attic Club is still being renovated, but given the success of The Beer Factory I have high expectations for it. It’s scheduled to be open in June.
