Artisan Amour In The Quiet Of The Mall BY BEN HOPKINS
Tucked away in a quiet alcove on the ground floor corridor adjoining Myanmar Plaza with Harry’s Bar, Artisan Amour is a haven of tranquillity specialising in hand crafted cakes and freshly brewed coffee, as well as light snacks and meals. It may not be easy to find, but therein lays its attraction. The intimate setting, stylishly adorned with burgundy sofa chairs and wooden benches, is made homely with the tummy rumbling aromas of freshly baked cakes and percolated coffee wafting across from the semi partitioned kitchen. There’s little to separate the baker’s workspace from the diners, making it tempting to lean across the divide and pick a cherry or walnut off the top of a cake still in construction. The brainchild of Singaporean Gabrielle Lim: Artisan Amour began operations in January 2016 primarily to bake and supply artisan cakes to food chains and office workers across Yangon. Open from 8am till 8pm seven days a week, Gabrielle’s team of six Myanmar staff blend and bake mouth–watering cakes and snacks for an ever growing clientele that includes Gloria Jeans and Pizza Hut, as well as a host of local office workers and passers–by lucky enough to be in on the secret. Once discovered, local clients have a habit of returning. It could have something to do with the very affordable prices, with assorted pastries and light meals such as Italian Pasta with Pulled Pork in Handmade Sauce or Baked Chicken in Teriyaki Sauce coming in at less than 6,000 K. Or the fact that it’s set aside from the characterless bustle of big mall shopping. Or perhaps, it’s simply the cakes, with the Chocolate Lava and the Classic New York Cheesecake amongst the hits. So, if you happen to be in the vicinity of Myanmar Plaza, looking for an alternative to big chain restaurants in a quiet setting or simply desperate to satiate your desire for something sweet, Artisan Amour should fit the bill.
