Road Devils (1970s) Movie poster from the 1970s film, Thaman Kya. It’s a movie about a group of delinquent youths (called in Myanmar the Lan Thu Ye or Road Devils), their lives and how they later became reformed. They were quite popular then. The clothes worn by the youths in the poster were the style worn in those days among youths/teenagers – leather jackets, tight trousers flared at the bottom, and sideburns. Thaman Kya is a mythical tiger. Bo Ba Ko was the teacher who showed them the evils of their ways. One of the male actors, Win Hlaing, went on to do more movies after this but passed on early in 1980. He appeared in some movies with popular actor Zaw One. The film was supervised by famous Myanmar directors U Nyi Pu and A1 U Tin Maung. The Director was Ai Than Htut (twin of Ai Thein Htut).

It’s time of the Tazaungdaing full moon festival! A time to celebrate the end of the rainy season, to offer robes and gifts to the monks, eat special treats, make paper lanterns, and most famous of all, enjoy the Taunggyi Hot-Air Balloon Festival. On the night of the full moon, 26th November, locals usually eat a specially prepared maezaliphuu salad, which is very good for health and wellbeing. And on the day after the full moon, teenagers and young children delight in playing tricks on each other, like hanging a ‘Butcher Shop’ sign on your friend’s house; this is called Kyimano Pwei, a time for mischief and fun. Another important ritual is the Satuditha Feast, where different houses share in giving free food out to others. Some houses might supply cordial drink, othCredit to Hong Sar ers, rice and curries. Each household has its own token, or ticket, which is handed out to neighbours to come and collect what’s on offer. Outside Shwedagon Pagoda a robe-weaving competition (Mathothingan) is held amongst the top weavers in Myanmar. This takes place on the nights of 25th and 26th November. Make sure you go down and have a look at their superb workmanship. Last of all, if you have time, make sure you go to the Taunggyi Hot-Air Balloon Festival, the most amazing, crazy and exhilarating experience you will ever have at a festival. Festival runs from the 20th to 26th November.

Traditional German Fare Mahlzeit

By Catherine Smith WHAT IT IS Mahlzeit is Yangon’s first German restaurant, located on the ground floor of the new Uniteam building in Sanchaung Township. The word Mahlzeit derives from a phrase that originally translated as ‘blessed mealtime’ and is now in common usage as a greeting in Germany, particularly around lunchtime – ‘enjoy your meal’. ATMOSPHERE We visited during the soft-opening period, so it was quiet; service was attentive. The décor is simple with clean lines, light pine-colored furniture, and a bar as a central feature. It is easy to imagine it becoming a bustling lunch and after-work/dinner destination. RECOMMENDATIONS The homemade breads were exceptional – varied and tasty – and will also be sold in their next-door café, along with other Germany delicacies. We started with Flammkuchen, a kind of traditional light-as-a-feather pizza topped with ham & onion, spinach & pumpkin and smoked salmon – definitely recommended (6,500 Ks - 9,000 Ks). We also tasted a medley of salads – cucumber, potato, cabbage and sausage – which can be ordered as standalone (8,000 Ks) or as accompaniments to mains. Our meat platter included a variety of locally made German sausages (19,000 Ks) and meat patties (9,000 Ks) – both were standout dishes; sides were sauerkraut, red cabbage, creamy mash, dumpling, spaetzli and delicious, meaty gravy. Desert included ‘Cadbury’s cheesecake’ and apple crumble. The cheesecake was luckily less sweet than it sounded (and moreish) though the crumble was slightly disappointing. Next visit we’ll go for the strudel or caramelised kaiserschmarm. FINAL THOUGHTS Mahlzeit has a business lunch menu that changes daily; and ‘sharing dishes’, such as suckling pig, will be on the menu soon. The quality of ingredients, homemade dishes and traditional fare make it a welcome addition to the local restaurant scene. 84 Pann Hlaing St, Sanchaung Township, Yangon. Ph: 01519115

FIESTA TIME

PERI PERI CHARCOAL CHICKEN By Myat Min WHAT IT IS Peri Peri Charcoal chicken is a newly opened Filipino chain-restaurant in Yaw Min Gyi Road, which serves choices of chicken dishes in a style more like Spanish and Mexican than Western. The menu primarily consists of flamed/grilled chicken servings, along with customised sauces. ATMOSPHERE Both tables and booths are available but if you prefer a more spacious place for parties, they have larger booths upstairs where a mini bar is also located. The place is well set out, with graphics of the Peri Peri Story, different spices, and available sauces made in-house. RECOMMENDATIONS It serves a variety of offerings such as starters, sandwiches, salads, pizzas and pastas as well as Peri Peri chicken portions with Mexican inspired side dishes. We chose the Fernando’s Spicy Chicken Fillet (4600 Ks), boneless chicken basted with olive oil, along with some side dishes such as Java rice, coleslaw and hummus (spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas). Another recommended dish is Buffalo Chicken Fajitas (7000 Ks), which consists of strips of spiced chicken topped with melted cheese. The vegie tortilla with salsa and yogurt gives a decent flavour but would be better if less spice was used. Their signature cocktails are the Beergarita (9000 Ks) and Frozen Margarita (6000 Ks). I had the Banana Foster (2800 Ks) which is creamy and rich in taste. The choice in desserts is limited. FINAL THOUGHTS If you are looking for a place for friends who love chatting over a hot platter of charcoal grilled Peri-Peri chicken and sides, or a family feast, this is for you – an authentic grilled chicken menu with nice, cozy environment. The prices are good value, for those with a car there is no car park.
