The Best DVD Shops And Data Libraries In Town BY HTUN LYNN ZAW

Visual media is currency in Yangon. Perhaps not for those with a solid wifi connection at home, if you're part of this demographic feel free to stop reading. The majority of Yangonites who use coffee shop wifi and/or topup cards for internet access it can be pricey to stream or download large files. So people are forced to wait for a friend's external hard drive to be passed around so they can participate in banter about House of Cards. Alternatively, you could browse one of the city's many DVD shops as long as you aren't looking for something that was just released. With several different ways to 'gather' movies these days, the quality of the recordings are varied. A DVD costs around 1500 Ks per disc, about 3 discs capture a season of a TV series. Some places will download shows directly to your hard drive for 50 Ks. These shops also tend to be neat, well air-conditioned and popular hangouts for the Myanmar's Gamer community. Without further to do, here is Htun Lyn Zaw's (a.k.a Frankie) recommended spots.

 DONG JING // Latha Street (upper block), in front of the police station.

Latha township, Yangon This probably is the most famous DVD shop in Yangon, since it always has been the talk among young people if they want some new movies in the current box office or new TV shows. Located in the heart of Yangon, Upper Block of Latha Road, a crowd of people is always browsing through DVD shelves, tumbling over each other in this tiny apartment of a shop. Not only they keep updates on mid seasons of TV shows, they also have collections of old TV shows. The same goes for the movies, music videos, and anime series. If you want to buy DVDs of Friends reruns, CSI series, Dawn of Justice, or new Game of Thrones mid-season, this is the best place to go.

 MEMORY // No. 178, 47th Street (Upper Block), Botahtaung Township This shop definitely is a haven for film enthusiasts, and people with eccentric taste in movies. Most DVD shops in Yangon can only offer new movies that were big hits in the box office or Oscar winners. This shop has old but gold movies strewn all over the place. You can always ask

the friendly shop owner or the staffs if you want to browse by directors, such as Staley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, or Richard Linklater’s movies. They will always try to find what you need. Since the shop contains a large section of DVD shelves, you can take your time and browse to your heart’s content.

 NAYTHARLAND // No. 142, Sint Oh Dan st, Latha Township, Yangon I always like to refer to this place as “Nerdvirna” because they not only have variety of DVDs but also items and toys concerning with superhero, pop culture, and comics. This undoubtedly a heaven for comic book fans, superhero enthusiast, and Star Wars geeks as they can browse a great collection of DVDs as well as window-shop the figurines of their favorite character. However, this probably will be one of the places you would regret taking your kids to, as they have action figures, superhero helmets, and Batman T Shirts lying around all over the place. Nonetheless, if you want to buy “Captain America (The Winter Soldier)” DVD and Captain America’s shirt before watching the Civil War on cinema, this is the place I would recommend.

 SWEETIE DVDS // Padonma Street, (near Knoe Htet Sanchaung) Just a few blocks away from Myay Ne Gone traffic lights, this shop is always filled with customers browsing away till they are satisfied. This place not only has movies and TV shows but also DVDs of live shows and music videos. Aside from this, it has a large collection of Blu Ray discs of new movies. The prices of the discs here range from 500 Kyats to 3500 kyats. In addition, a friendly staff are can help you navigate for a specific movie.

 MMOTAKU DATA LIBRARY // No.36 (Ground Floor ),

19th Street, Latha Township, Yangon This up and coming data shop is a revolution in DVD industry in Yangon as it started selling TV shows and movies with data transferring basis. It was established by anime enthusiasts’ organization MMOtuku, which always do annual Cosplay festivals. Locating near China Town of Yangon, 19th street upper block, the shop is always crowded with costumers browsing the catalogs. Since it is always crowded, you might also have to leave your hard disk for a while. This shop probably is the perfect shop for anime fans and TV show fans since they keep updates on every TV shows and Anime series. They are also always active on their Facebook page, keeping in touch with its costumers’ favorite movies and TV series. You can always ask them on their Facebook page whether they have the movies or TV shows you want. Subscribe to them in order to know about their monthly promotions and discounts HONORABLE MENTIONS

 HD MOVIE STORES (DATA LIBRARY) Thit san khant computer service (in front of yangon post office) Bo Aung Kyaw Street (Lower Block), Botahtaung Township Yangon

 MOVIE MAXTRIC (DATA LIBRARY) No.945, Kyait Wine Pagoda Road, Yangon

Feast At The Shan Diner That Is Lotaya in Kyeemindaing BY GWAN HO TONG, CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER AND HTUN LYNN ZAW

WHAT IS IT – Lotaya is a favourite for casual Myanmar diners and the first Shan restaurant to ever sell Myay Oh Myi Say (Clay pot noodle) in Yangon. The founder of Lotaya is Burmese but grew up in southern Shan before moving to the big city. Upon arrival, the owner noticed the lack of southern Shan traditional food in Yangon and decided to open a restaurant. Now, Lotaya has gained immense popularity and already has three locations under the partnership of the founder and her sister. The shop we ate at is the third branch. ATMOSPHERE- This Lotaya in San Chaung is undoubtedly calmer than the other branches, especially the original Bogyoke location. The interior is quite lived-in, similar to a diner, with worn tile floors and table tops eroded from countless wipe downs. The vast majority of customers at this spot are Myanmar but foreigners can expect to be treated with over-thetop kindness, at least one of the owners speaks impressive English. RECOMMENDATION – Myay Oh Myi Say, the signature dish of the restaurant, is delightfully unique with ingredients from southern Shan state. As soon as you got the dish, the smell of authentic Shan Pae Nga Pi(Shan spicy bean paste) will rise up to capture your appetite. The noodle is well-mixed with the other ingredients, and you can taste the mushy mushrooms with every bite of the noodle. The price of this dish ranges from 2000Ks to 3500Ks, depending on the meat topping options. Gyozas are definitely a must since they come with special sesame scented sauce, which is also great for a palate cleanser. You can even get the cheaper alternatives such as dried noodle with chopped chicken and mini fried wontons for 1500Ks, Shan noodle for 1300Ks, or Tofu salad for 1500Ks. FINAL THOUGHTS – . Myay Oh Myi Shay might not be a good idea to eat in hot weather since the noodle itself is really hot. However, the freshly made mango juice was a great way to counteract the heat both from the food and the weather. The prices are very reasonable with over 200 dishes on the menu. The idea is to have something for anyone longing for a specific Shan traditional dishes. 572 Lower KyeeMyinDaing Rd. Please call 095044143 (English) or 09254131721(Burmese/Chinese)

Freeflow of Tapas & General Snacks at Le Cellier BY MARISA WIDIYANTI

WHAT IT IS - Every Friday night, Le Cellier, the fine-dining restaurant of Novotel, offers their variation of buffet-style Tapas, a selection of appetizers originating from Spain. While the setting is quite sophisticated, the items on the menu are mostly simple, although made with high quality ingredients that are difficult to find in the city. The wine selection is excellent and considering that both food and wine is unlimited, the price of 30 USD is very fair. ATMOSPHERE - The restaurant is nicely decorated and the calm atmosphere offers a welcome break from busy Yangon Friday evening traffic. The Tapas night is both suitable for relaxing a long working week or for starting a long night out, even though the latter might be difficult due to the recent enforcement of the curfew. RECOMMENDATIONS - The cold buffet offers a wide variety of items, from different specialty cheeses and cold cuts to small burgers, pizzas and dishes of couscous, as well as salmon blinis, seafood and salads. Most dishes are basic combinations of good ingredients which ensures that everyone will be able to find something they like...Our favorite was the couscous which had a very well-balanced taste between sour and savory. We also liked the cheese spread with Dill, which went very well with the wide selection of breads. The egg mimosa which very much reminds of the egg-salad most grandmas like to make, was another highlight. An unexpectedly positive surprise was the savory fruit salad, which combined a little sweetness with subtle herbs....Items we did not enjoy were the mussels that had a rather dry texture, the tuna mini-burger which tasted artificial and the mozzarella and fried vegetable baguettes which had delicious toppings that were unfortunately set off by the rockhard baguette... Finally, we have to mention the extraordinary selection of wines and the expertise of the house- sommelier who seems to have very extensive wine knowledge. FINAL THOUGHTS - The Tapas night is a dining option that lovers of Western food and good wine will definitely enjoy. It is suitable for many occasions, be it a night out with friends, a romantic dinner for 2 or a formal dinner with business partners. Novotel MAX, 459 Pyay Road. Ph: 01 230 5858
