inconversation
in conversation with
la paing: tatoo artist BY BOB PERCIVAL
La Paing’s tattoo studio is located in an ordinary suburban house along a quiet side street of North Dagon Township. It’s a long drive out to get there, and it makes you realise what a vast city Yangon really is. The only sign of something out of the ordinary is a very glamorous Toyota Scion parked outside the main gate, La Paing’s friend’s car, on loan. These are the two sides of La Paing (The Dolphin) – a nice quiet unassuming guy who does tattoos not just for his local mates but also for Yangon celebrities. When we arrive, La Paing is sitting in the corner of the room, tattooing the arm of a friend whose his girlfriend is sporting bright red hair and K-Pop style skirt and top. There is a bright overhead lamp to work by. La Paing is wearing old jeans and a DOOM t-shirt. The atmosphere is friendly and hip, with a few other mates sitting around on lounges in the large ramshackle room, playing guitar and singing. It’s all very cool and relaxed. On the walls hang a motley collection of electronic and acoustic guitars, looked over by a huge graffiti-style painting of skull. “I am originally from Mandalay, I moved to Yangon in 2006. I love singing and I used to have my own band. I have always been interested in design and tattooing, so I learned. I am self-taught," he says. La Paing enjoys all types of tattoo design, including traditional patterns, skulls, butterflies – anything really – mostly his own creations. His specialty is portraits. Give him a photo of your loved one, and he will reproduce it in colour or black/ grey ink. He has a portrait of his son on the back of his right hand. “If your
beloved boyfriend or girlfriend leaves you, well then just ink it over with another design”, he laughs. He has already tattooed celebrities such as Swan, Si Phyo and May Htut Khaung; “too many to remember,” he says modestly in that cool way that he handles himself. He also tattooed He’ Lay, but it was only a stencil. Tattooing from La Paing can be arranged by appointment only and prices are negotiable. Expect a very small design to cost around 20,000 Ks. La Paing is very aware of health issues and only uses disposable needles. Patrons are never allowed to drink on premises. One thing we forgot to ask was why he is named ‘The Dolphin’. Save that question for when you go out for a visit. Enjoy! Rebel Ink Tattoo Studio - No 21, Pyin Gadoe Street, 34 Quarter, North Dagon Township, Yangon | 09260189806

Hot Pot at K.K. POTS By Win Lei Lei Tun
WHAT IT IS K.K. Pots, a hot pot restaurant, offers a contemporary Asian menu that combines traditional dishes with Western and Japanese ingredients and preparation techniques. Though it may be new to the food scene, its headchef Jay Yang definitely isn’t. Previously studying at the Culinary Institute of America and training under Iron Chef Morimoto, Jay now brings his passion and expertise to K.K. Pots to offer you the best hot pot in the city. ATMOSPHERE K.K. Pots is cozy one-room restaurant that gives off a casual vibe. The décor is very minimalist-chic with white walls, plain furniture, paintings, and culinary magazines on shelves. RECOMMENDATIONS The K.K. Mini Pot (28,000 Ks) is recommended if you’re going with a friend or two. Not only does this set include seafood and beef platters for the hot pot, but it also comes with a salad and Japanese fried rice. The broth was flavourful, without being too overpowering, and the meat and vegetables were all very fresh. If you’re in the mood for something light, try the Si kyet khao swe (2500 Ks). This is a wheat noodle dish with chicken, star anise oil, and soy sauce. Their noodles are delicious and freshly made, making this dish a healthier alternative to the ones available at most other restaurants. Also try their famous molten lava cake (3,500 Ks). The seemingly solid dessert reveals a secret gooey chocolate surprise when you cut into it. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this decadent delight will make you want to lick the plate bare. Price Range: Appetisers - 2,000 Ks to 7,500 Ks, Entrees - 2,500 Ks to 10,500 Ks, Hot Pot sets - 28,000 Ks to 45,000 Ks, Desserts - 3,500 Ks. FINAL THOUGHTS I’ve been to K.K. Pots three times in the past week. That speaks for itself! Cnr. of Bo Myat Htun Street and Anawrahta Road, Botahtaung Township, Yangon. 01-293596 | 11.30 AM - 10.00 PM / Breakfast available from 6.30 AM - 10.00 AM

Otake Japanese Restaurant @ Kandawgyi Palace Hotel BY BOB PERCIVAL WHAT IT IS Otake Japanese Restaurant is situated in the tranquil lakeside setting of Kandawgyi Palace Hotel. Opened early this year, it serves first-class Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price. Otake’s biggest asset is Chef Nanko San who brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to the kitchen. He has twenty years experience in prestigious Japanese restaurants in Bangkok. His specialty is sashimi, sushi and grilled fish. His skills are very evident in the quality dishes on offer. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere in Otake is intimate and tranquil. The walls and floors are lined with fresh pinewood. You can smell the scent of pine as you enter, making everything feel fresh and light, as it should be when eating Japanese food. We chose to dine in the private Mizuumi Room, which would comfortably seat (Western style) around ten people. Here also, there is pinewood, and a large wooden table to eat at, plus comfortable cushioned seats. It’s a room where you can be as loud or as quiet as you like. RECOMMENDATIONS There is a set lunch menu, with a bento set of tempura, sashimi, saba shio and chawan mushi (US$25). We started with some beautifully fresh Edamame (US$4) and Miso, then ordered the Salmon Nigiri Maguro Sashimi (US$5), Nigiri Salmon Sashimi (US$6), Salmon Shashimi (US13), and Maguro Sashimi ($US13). The rice was delicate and rich in flavour. The sashimi is flown in from Japan and is of the highest quality. The salmon and tuna were perfect, melting in the mouth with their own distinctive tastes. We finished with the signature tempura dish, Tempura Mori (US$14), with brilliantly light batter coating the tender moist shrimp and fresh vegetable. This was the highlight dish. FINAL THOUGHTS Otake serves quality Japanese cuisine prepared by the very skillful and creative Chef Nanko San. The ambience of Otake is peaceful and comforting, something rare in Yangon eateries. A great place for a business lunch, or intimate dinner with friends. Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, Kan Yeik Thar Road, Yangon 11.00 AM – 3.30 PM and 6.00 PM – 10.30 PM | 01 559 548
