Where To Get a Camera, Fix Your Camera in Yangon BY SEB HIGGINSON
Even with Downtown divided into streets dedicated to different industries, finding a niche service in Yangon can be very, very difficult. Camera equipment and repairs are, if anything, even more difficult to locate. This seems to be the first guide for the camera shops and repairers in Yangon. If anything is missing, please let us know!
ROYAL DIGITAL CAMERA ? 34th street, downtown
This is the best equipped, most well-known camera shop in Yangon, despite the fact that it’s tiny and quite difficult to spot. Price are in Kyat and larger purchases come with a one or two year Royal Digital warranty. The staff also speak some English which is helpful for those who don’t understand Burmese camera terminology. This should be your first port of call when purchasing camera equipment; the prices here are a good benchmark against the other shops.
CANON CAMERA STORE ? Dagon Centre
Tucked away in the corridor between Dagon Centres 1 & 2; it’s brightly lit, spotlessly clean and very clearly branded. As you would expect, it deals exclusively in new Canon gear and the staff are fairly knowledgeable about the products they sell. There are several camera kits with lenses out on display, and some lenses available to purchase separately. Prices may be a little higher than you would find in a non-branded store, however.
SONY STORE ? Myanmar Plaza
Sony’s incredibly modern, franchised store opened in Myanmar Plaza recently, and it shows. The spotless shop stocks TV’s, sound systems, game systems and other Sony products, but there is a substantial portion of floor space dedicated to the range of Sony cameras. Purchasing an Alpha here also guarantees a 1 year national warranty backed by TMW Enterprise Ltd, who operate the store.
IMAGE CAMERA & ACCESSORIES ONLINE STORE
? No.3, 3rd floor (right), Zeya Thiri Kyaung Lane, Yeiktha street, Waizayayanta housing, Thangangyun Tsp.
A store and showroom that primarily uses Facebook for advertising, communication and online sales, Image Camera & Accessories Online Store offers some of the best deals for quality camera equipment in Yangon. Besides cameras, you can find dry-boxes, camera flashes, tripods, camera rucksacks and even DJI-model drones for reasonable prices.
MYANMA A-HALA
? Between 39 & 40th street, Anawratha Road, next to Lotteria
A large store that sells a range of digital cameras, perhaps even more than Royal Digital. Myanma A-hala even has a small number of second hand products for sale, including some analogue cameras. They also have a good selection of accessories, from Yongnuo flash guns to strobe kits and a wide variety of tripods. The owner speaks pretty good English if that’s a concern.
REPAIRS ZINMAUNGLINN CAMERA REPAIRS AND CLEANING Zinmaunglinn was the owner of the heavily trafficked camera store, The Eye, a small shop downtown which sold a number of old time photographic curiosities. The Eye is gone, but Zinmaunglinn still runs a business from his home in Thingangyun Township, cleaning and repairing cameras for local photographers. An SLR sensor clean will cost between $30 and $50, and a replacement shutter unit will cost between $50 and $150. Zinmaunglinn will send a trusted taxi driver to collect what needs to be repaired and return it for a fee of 5000 Ks. Despite the odd system, he comes highly recommended. Contact 09-73027117 // zinmaunglinn@gmail.com
HAN WIN TIN CAMERA REPAIR (RECOMMENDED BY ROYAL DIGITAL) ? No 129, 33rd street (middle block)
Royal Digital Camera recommends Han Win Tin for sensor cleaning, and if you thought that Royal Digital was hard to find you this place will come as something of a surprise. Han Win Tin works beneath an awning in an alleyway off 33rd street, and at first glance it looks absolutely nothing like a camera repair shop. No dust-free, sealed environment with spotless equipment, but he does the job pretty well anyway. We had a sensor cleaned there for an astonishing 1000 kyat, and it was actually a very good job. Not for the faint of heart, however.
SULE PAGODA, WEST SIDE One of several small camera shops tucked into the Sule Pagoda roundabout, this shop stands out due to its ‘Camera Museum’ display, which hosts an enormous variety of analogue cameras and photographic oddities (many of which are not for sale). The shopfront promises camera repairs, but we can’t guarantee anything as we have never used them. Still, worth checking out for the camera museum if nothing else.
ONLINE SHOPPING SHOP.COM.MM Perhaps not the most obvious choice for camera gear, but shop.com.mm does offer a decent range of mainly Sony and Panasonic items. Shop.com. mm is pay on delivery, and they offer a 7-day returns policy if the product is faulty or not as described, so you have peace of mind with a purchase.

Dining The Chinese Way At Ho May BY KHAING KHAING MON
WHAT IT IS – Ho May means ‘ good taste ‘ in Chinese. It’s a Hong Kong style BBQ restaurant situated in Moe Kaung Street, Yankin. It becomes increasingly popular with both local and foreign Chinese and people from Hong Kong. ATMOSPHERE – A cute two-storey building with a garden to sit in which they are currently redecorating to be a small bar. The place setting seems a bit tight even though nicely and simply decorated. The tables and chairs are a bit too closely placed so it is hard to go in and out. The general atmosphere is nice and homey, unless you are in one of the special rooms. Despite how cramped you may be, the service is immaculate. RECOMMENDATIONS – We were served a plate of HK style mixed BBQ meat which was a very good idea for a variety of different kind for a small group of people like me and my partner. It included roasted duck and chicken, BBQ pork meat and belly with a portion of jelly fish salad. We absolutely loved the dish. The thing I like best about this place is that they serve the most popular dishes from different part of China. Apart from their signature Hong Kong style BBQs, the famous Sichuan spicy fried chicken and Kwantung flat noodles with beef called Hofan are available so you can pick the best of dishes from different Chinese states. Everything is available in different sized portions, so you don't have to be a glutton. FINAL THOUGHTS – Really good authentic Chinese food with mid-range prices. Some dishes can take a while so it helps to order a BBQ first to eat while waiting for signature entrees. No. 48 Moe Kaung Street, Yankin Township// 09259257887

Shwe Ei Is A Middle-Class Tea Shop Which Yangon Needs More Of BY CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER
A traditional Burmese tea shop with perhaps a bit more polish. Not too much polish of course, but enough gleam to prevent this small restaurant from taking on a weathered appearance of a typical tea shop. With seemingly modern decor and air conditioning, I started to wondered if this place was actually a Burmese tea shop or simply a Burmese restaurant. I asked a few local friends: What makes a tea shop a tea shop? Many were unable to give a concrete definition, instead restoring to the line, ‘you know one when you see one’. Shwe Ei probably would not pass this instinctive eye-test of what a tea shop is or isn’t, that said, it possesses all of the classic tea shop characteristics. (1) Shwe Ei offers traditional Myanmar dishes. The Mohinga being the most popular. (2) The prices are affordable, with most dishes no more than 2000 Ks. (3) They serve complimentary tea and Laphet ye (4) Most patrons are local. Seems like a tea shop. Of course, locals who frequent Shwe Ei care little about how ‘authentic’ it is, being much more interested in their servings of homemade Shwe Ei mohinga. For those who haven’t heard of this popular brand: Shwe Ei is to Mohinga what Maruchan is to Japanese Ramen. However, instead of poor college students, Shwe Ei has been able to grow into a national institution thanks to the export market of nostalgic Burmese expats.
Foreign-Owned? Sort Of… Is this the first foreigner-owned Burmese tea shop in Yangon? It seems improbable, but until someone can point to another example, Aaron Barnes and Shwe Ei take the title by default. He reckons he’s the first. Well, Barnes is from Australia but he is half Burmese with many family members being established restauranteurs . In fact, it is his Auntie Ei who is the founder of Shwe Ei mohinga and one of the catalysts for this new teashop. The F&B family dynasty also includes an uncle who founded FEEL Myanmar, the iconic chain of restaurants. Now Barnes is using his background in business management to start something of his own. 119, Upper Kyi Myin Daing Road
