Forks Up -Three New Healthy Yangon Restaurants BY KATE DIXON Have you ever craved a healthy meal in Yangon? A vegetarian-friendly restaurant serving food cooked without MSG, palm oil, or processed sugar? Three new Yangon restaurants rise to the challenge. “Thanks to social media, healthy eating is trending, especially among young people,” M, my Shan friend said as she showed me the way to Healthy Me, a new salad bar on Bo Gyoke St.

 HEALTHY ME Open 8 am to 10 pm, Healthy Me offers a variety of breakfast items including overnight oatmeal, but specializes in salads and juices made fresh to order with no added sugar. Prices are reasonable, most between 2,500 and 6,000 Ks. “Healthy food is essential to good health. I could charge higher prices, I but want to make healthy food affordable,” said proprietor Richard (Sai Phan Lu). “It’s not possible to have a hot body if you eat only junk food, no matter how often you workout,” he added with a grin. “I tell my staff to prepare food as if they are cooking for their lover. It’s so important to be passionate about the food you create.” Richard’s interest in wholesome food began in childhood as he helped family tend their organic garden in a small Shan village. He loved to explore the surrounding forests, chewing young branches snapped from wild cinnamon trees. The concept of Healthy Me was born as he worked at a Singapore restaurant focused on salads and healthy foods. After several years

researching and perfecting recipes, Richard returned to Yangon and opened Healthy Me on September 3, 2016. I loved the “design your own rice or salad bowl”. For 3,900 Ks, a generous portion of fresh greens (or brown rice) is topped by up to 5 supplements including beans, nuts, fruit, and tofu (extra choices are 300 Ks each). Richard makes all of the 14 dressings, ranging from spicy peanut (my favorite) to pesto himself. For additional cost, add meat and complex carbs. My companion enjoyed the beef salad served with veggies over brown rice. The strips of beef were tender and tasty. To tenderize and flavor it Richard massages the beef with a dry rub and allows it to marinate overnight. ? 86, Bogyoke Aung San Road 09 258 688 891 Open: 8:30 AM — 10:00 PM

 NOURISH Nourish smelt deliciously of cinnamon when I walked in. Tammi, the British cook, stirred a batch of granola as chocolate melted slowly in a double boiler. Officially opening November 27th, Nourish is part of the Yangon Yoga House family and is located next to their downtown studio. Aside from honey used as sweetener and pots of Annie’s yogurt on sale, Nourish is vegan. Tammi makes almost everything from scratch, including veggie burgers, falafel, hummus, and flatbread. The wrap is delicious - snappy arugula, creamy homemade (vegan) lemon mayo, tomatoes, shredded red cabbage and beets sprinkled, with toasted pumpkin seeds and wrapped in a tortilla. And the energy bar! A rich, chewy perfection of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and chocolate. “Sourcing high-quality ingredients at a reasonable cost is a challenge,” Tammi admits. “We use as much organic produce as we can, but it’s expensive.” Some ingredients, like quinoa and agave syrup must be imported from Thailand. This means that Nourish isn’t cheap, but prices are reasonable considering the superior ingredients. Many items are available for takeout, including the Nourish salad, made with organic veggies, nuts, seeds and quinoa. But the veggie burgers and smoothie bowls - a concoction of frozen bananas and coconut milk topped with fruit and nuts - are best enjoyed in house. ? 36/38 Alanpya Pagoda Road, Yangon, Myanmar 09 254 278 217 Open: Mon — Fri 8:00 PM — 8:00 PM, Sat — Sun 10:00 AM — 4:00 PM

 ANYA AHTA Anya Ahta offers draft beer along with class, healthy food and art. Aung Soe Min, who also owns Pansodan Gallery and Pansuriya with his partner Nance, opened it in mid-September to showcase the traditional food of Anya, his ancestral home in middle Burma. “I want to show people how tasty simple, home-cooked food made with traditional ingredients can be,” he said. Located on the corner of 37th and Mahabandula, it is an airy, highceilinged place cooled by fans. The walls, painted black, are covered with paintings, mostly scenes from middle Burma. Aung pointed to one saying “that’s Mt. Poppa, where our honey comes from. Our juices are sweetened with honey not sugar.” He introduced the head cook, Myint Naing, his childhood friend and said “we use only peanut and sesame oil. Myint Naing and his family grow the plants and grind them the traditional way, with stones turned by an ox.”

guide Homemade sausages and sundried beef are on the menu, but most dishes can be made vegan on request. The most expensive item is 3000 Ks and the salads just a 1000 Ks. The pickled tealeaf salad is colorful and very flavorful. The “drumstick” curry, made from the nutritious seed pods of the moringa tree, is rich and savory. For those who can’t decide, Anya Ahlu comes with rice and four side dishes including thick bean stew and tangy fermented mango salad. It’s based on food served during the traditional donation ceremony for Buddhist monks. As Richard said, a healthy diet is essential to good health. Diets high in sugar help cause type 2 diabetes, a growing problem in Myanmar. “Voting with your fork” also helps prevent environmental destruction. Large palm oil plantations have led to the clear cutting of thousands of acres of tropical forests. Animal products require more resources and cause higher emissions than plant-based alternatives, according to a 2010 UN report. Hopefully these three restaurants are just a start in a trend toward good health! ? Between Mahabandoolah and Anawrahta on 37th street Open: Daily from 7 AM — 10 PM

review

A Seafood Feast at Min Lann BY NUUSHI Min Lann is a Rakhine traditional seafood restaurant chain that has been a favourite amongst Yangonites since the opening of their first branch on Minn Street 17 years ago. Today, the Min Lann Restaurant continues to go from strength to strength with five branches in Yangon. The latest opening on Shin Saw Pu Street offers indoor and outdoor seating for up to 300 people with four VIP rooms. A six-course menu, comprised entirely of high quality local seafood based dishes is available on a daily basis and costs a very reasonable USD30. The food is prepared in an open kitchen and the atmosphere is always buzzing with energy. However, if like me it’s a quiet evening and conversation with friends you’re planning the VIP rooms are ideal. For the appetiser, we had Ngapali beach styled Grill Prawns, a fusion of Thai and Chinese flavours minus the hot chilli sauce. In my opinion, the perfect start. Moving on we tried the Fisherman’s Curry, a signature soup of Min Lann that combines freshly cooked prawns, flower crab, cattle fish and shell fish in a very satisfying way. One serving was enough for three people and went perfectly with noodles. Continuing with our healthy choices we tried the steamed vegetables with green chilli and fish paste. If red hot chili pepper are not your thing then beware and ask them to make the sauce mild when ordering. No Asian can stray far from rice, so naturally we dived into the Seafood Fried Rice and it was so finger licking good we polished it off within five minutes. The friend rice was made with crispy prawn, flower crab, squid, fish, carrot and corn. Finally, our dessert was a combination of traditional sweets. One stand out dish was the famous, Mont Lat Saung: A Myanmar dessert made from tear drop rice shake and liquid sugar smothered in coconut dressing. Min Lann is a great venue for aficionados of seafood who love to dine outside. Soft drinks and beer are available by the gallon and the atmosphere is always lively and informal.

Minn Lann Mont Ti Sanchaung: Shin Saw Pu Street, Waizayandar Road: No.69, Waizayandar Road, (8)Ward, 1st Street, Industrial Zone
