Peasants’ Day (1967) This 1967 government-issued postcard says “Animal Husbandry and Agriculture for the Peoples’ benefit!” It is commemorating the annual Peasants’ Day, celebrated on 2nd March. The main rally was always held at Yangon Kyaikkasan grounds (the old Rangoon Racecourse), with smaller rallies at other towns and cities. Attendance was compulsory for all Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSSP) members. The rallies were held yearly until 1988 when the BSPP government was overthrown. The rallies were conducted Communist style, as in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). YOUR LOCAL FRECH BISTRO Le Petit Comptoir By Bob Percival
WHAT IT IS Le Petit Comptoir is a great addition to the quality eateries that are blossoming along Yaw Min Gyi Street. It has been a very soft opening for this French bistro restaurant, with the French owner, Nicholas Rob, believing that the place will speak for itself, and it does. Nicholas is warm and friendly, and the perfect host. He is an avid lover of food and all things French. The restaurant also bakes its own baguettes, pastries and quiche. ATMOSPHERE The decor is deceptively simple. Tables are made from recycled teak doors, which creates a friendly warm aesthetic. The seating is a set of eclectic re-assembled art-deco local chairs. The walls are lightly decorated with French posters. It is a simple white space that says welcome, relax and just enjoy the food. There is nothing pretentious here. RECOMMENDATIONS The Beef Bourguignon (18,000 Ks), served light baby onion, slowly roasted garlic and creamy mashed potato, was the standout dish for me. The beef, locally sourced, is marinated in red wine for four hours, then slowly cooked for five hours. The care and time taken in the preparation of this dish is fully rewarded. The generous chunks of meat are impossibly tender and the stew of thick rich sauce is full with flavour – this is a great dish. The Risotto (12,000 Ks) was rich and filling and could easily be shared as a main dish. We finished the meal with the best French Lemon Tart (9000 Ks) I have ever had the pleasure to eat. FINAL THOUGHTS Le Petit Comptoir is a great local bistro-style French eatery, with quality food, attentive service, and a homely ambience. This place is not to be missed – great for lunch or dinner with friends, or that romantic rendezvous. Check the blackboard for new monthly menu. Address: 42 Yaw Min Gyi Street, Dagon Township Phone: 09 974 725870 Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 10:30 PM

Cheesy But Not Light Pizza Hut Yangon By amanda win
WHAT IT IS Pizza Hut has joined the stream of franchised chains that have been flowing steadily into Myanmar. They are trying to offer a menu that will fit in well with both Burmese citizens and the expats living here. ATMOSPHERE The decorations are what you would expect from a casual dining restaurant; the bricked walls, the neatly organised tables, all in a two story building, that holds around 150 customers. You can also enjoy your food outdoors on the balcony, although I’d suggest doing so after the sun sets; it would not be wise to confront the Yangon scorching sun in the afternoon. RECOMMENDATIONS Two of their most recommended pizzas are the Cheesy Lover Pizza: Regular Pan Crust (12,000 Ks) and the Super Supreme Pizza: Regular Pan Crust (12,000 Ks), where you have an abundant choice nine different toppings; and a mix of meat or vegetables. The Supreme Pizza is also available in seafood. On a cheesier note, the Spaghetti Carbonara (5000 Ks) includes baked bacon and mushrooms in a cheesy and creamy Carbonara sauce. Last of all, their special Prime USA Baby Back Pork Ribs with Fries and Salad (18,000 Ks) is one of the top dishes on the menu. The ribs are imported from all the way from the States, of course! For drinks, the Fresh Mint Lemonade (2000 Ks) is highly recommended. FINAL THOUGHTS Most of the dishes are reasonably well priced and tasty. You get the fastfood insight of finding a red chef hat icon (indicating that they are chef recommended) beside some of the dishes on the menu, if you are that indecisive about what you should try.Watch those calories! No.403 A, Corner Dhamazedi Road & Golden Valley Road, Bahan Township Phone: 09799720373 Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
WEEKEND HIGHLIGHT La Carovana Saturday Market By amanda win
On the vast green lawn outside La Carovana, you’ll find kiosks set up in a neat arc; the atmosphere buzzing with excited shoppers getting presents for their families, vendors selling their passion and kids trotting along to keep up with their parents. The Saturday market is a new tradition started by La Carovana not so long ago, for a chance to meet new people, get to know the stories of the vendors and their products, and to gather all your children for a play date. It’s also a matter of convenience to be able to find a lot of quality products you want in one place instead of spending all your time running all over town. This way, you spend less time and get a chance to experience a quieter and relaxing shopping experience than you normally would at the lesser known markets in Burma. The market starts at 12pma and goes until 6pm, which works out perfectly for you to shop after brunching at La Carovana. They’re also hoping to extend it on Sundays in the near future when everything is more stable than it is now. For the time being, the vendors available are a mixture of famous bakeries, like Sydney’s and Yangon Bakehouse, along with the humble Tsukumo Bakery specialising in their variety of breads. There are also up and coming vendors like The Cold Pressed Juice Co. which will give you optimal results doing a cleanse with their freshly pressed juices.
SATURDAY MARKET@ LA CAROVANA 19th dECEMBER 2015 photos by pt@images
You can also now get smoked meat at Le’Picerie, a homemade business only available at La Carovana for the time being. On the other hand, there are vendors we walk past in hypermarkets and never notice, like SoyAi, a self-sustainable program to help underprivileged youths to help themselves and others like them by providing soy products such as soy milk and tofu. By just making a small purchase at SoyAi, you can help improve someone’s life. There’s also Pomelo, a non-profitable gift shop where all the products are locally made by several underprivileged groups. You can buy a chunky necklace for your best friend and at the same time, get to know the stories of the people behind each and every product. Then there’s The Warehouse for some wine, Sunflower for beautifully woven ethnic products, Port Autonomy for some gelato, Mya for chemical free fruits, and La Carovana for their flowers. “We want everyone to be able to feel like they can sell anything here, even if it’s their grandma’s homemade cookie recipe. We do have a finite amount of space so we’re selective with whom we’ll allow but anyone is welcome to come and ask.” said Jeremiah Whyte. So it’s time to get out of your comfort zones and go share some of your passion with everyone else. The Saturday Market is definitely a place to visit and take a stroll around on a lazy Yangon Saturday.
