Definitely Special

DIY HOTPOT & BBQ Restaurant BY VICKIE

WHAT IT IS My friend and I were amazed to find pork intestines, beef tongues, pork brains and many more dishes to put into gurgling broths and dipping sauces, but this is not all. You can also get squid or ribs to bbq right before your eyes. This unique selection of dishes available is the work of two different culinary minds, a Chinese chef and a Burmese chef, who want to try something new. ATMOSPHERE The restaurant is far from fancy, but has great natural light and a relaxed feel. Each table has bbq plate, induction burners and empty pots awaiting, surrounding a ladle and large, slotted spoon. This two-storey diner has tables and long counters with individual heating elements for each person's hot pot or BBQ. Upstairs is an open area, that includes a mini bar. Although the place can be a little bit packed, the whole social nature of this type of meal gives something reminiscent of a dinner party. RECOMMENDATION The simple broths available were Pork or Chicken, which you can order as either spicy or sweet. There are well-designed combos of ingredients ( 8000Ks to 15,000Ks), but we ordered individual things off of the rare menu, Pork Intestines, Colon, Liver, Tongue, and Brains. The average price of each dish is 2000Ks. As for the BBQ, my personal favourites were Squid(2000Ks) and Pork ribs(2,500Ks), which were grilled by the server, over an oil filter. Among the appetizers Cereal Prawns(6,000Ks) was a hearty dish, sweet, savoury and crunchy and so fresh. FINAL THOUGHTS At times the staff was a bit hurried, but everything was fine once the food arrived at the table. The quality and taste of the servings were amazing for its price. No.(95/F) Waizayandar Street, (3) Quarter, Yangon, Myanmar 09 258 200 088, 09 258 200 900, 09 258 202 088 Opening Hours : 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Epicurian Perfection Le Planteur BY BOB PERCIVAL

WHAT IT IS Le Planteur is the best fine dining restaurant in Myanmar. It specialises in the best French cuisine brought to you by courtesy of Chef Gil, who has learned from and worked at prestigious kitchens around the world. ATMOSPHERE Set in a classic 1930s colonial building and expansive outdoor gardens, from arrival to departure dining here is a total escape from the hustle and bustle of Yangon. Set beside Inya Lake, we were able to sit under the full moon, the only sounds being ambient Moroccan style music, and the delightful honking the household geese. The service is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, with complete attention to detail. RECOMMENDATIONS The wine list is extensive and even the most expensive wines can be purchased by the glass. For appetisers we started with the Seared Foie Gras with Vinegar Sauce and Sweet Potato Puree (US$24), perfectly cooked and exploding in the mouth with exquisite flavour. We also had the Red Tuna Sashimi & Tartar with Wasabi Ice Cream (US$28), a great combination, the tuna melting in the mouth with the unexpected incursion of wasabi. For main we ordered the French Duck Breast with Red Boise Sauce and Glazed Vegetables and Crepe (US$45), again all the flavours combining well, with the meat tender and juicy. The other main dish was the signature Tajima Wagyu Beef Striploin with Truffled Polenta, Asparagus and Black Truffle (US$64), a generous serving perfectly cooked Wagyu, that needs to be at least medium rare, to enjoy its texture and flavour. FINAL THOUGHTS Le Planteur's price is only justified through the sheer quality of its food, service and ambience. Le Planteur a restaurant were you have to leave behind your preconceptions and allow yourself to fully enjoy the delight of an epicurean experience that you will never forget. There is now a new March menu on offer, including a special Fish menu and Vegetarian menu. Address: 80 University Avenue | Bahan Township, Yangon Phone: 01514230
