Libraries of Yangon Guide
Burmese Chinese Library, periodical section
Libraries of Yangon It is hard to avoid bumping into a bookstore or book vendor in Yangon. Libraries are a bit harder to find. Besides the libraries operated by foreign embassies, there are several locally-run services that carry English and Burmese reading materials. MYANMORE has profiled libraries with distinctive collections.
SARPAY BEIKMAN PUBLIC LIBRARY
? BTS Bldg. 37th St & Merchant St, 1st Floor | P Mon-Fri 9am-4pm, Sat 12pm-3pm
The Sarpay Beikman Public Library is great for anyone interest in a quiet space, a new book or a research project. It is like stepping back into the 1950s, with beautiful wooden furniture, card catalogues and large collection of fiction and non-fiction English books, which can be borrowed once joining for the princely sum of 3200 kyat. Aside from university and embassy affiliated libraries, this location probably has the most diverse collection of English and Burmese texts. The clean and relaxed space is sparsely filled with locals browsing through Myanmar newspapers and magazines while on lunch break. The head librarian speaks a little English and is very helpful.
SARPAY BEIKMAN CHILDREN’S LIBRARY
? BTS bldg. 37th St. south of Merchant St. Ground Floor | P M-F 9am-4pm, Sat 12pm-3pm
There are thousands of children’s illustrated books, in both Burmese and English (donated by the Myanmar Book Centre). Everybody is welcome from 10.00am-4.00pm.
UNIVERSITIES CENTRAL LIBRARY (UCL)
? Sagaing Rd on the University of Yangon Campus | P Mon-Fri 9am-4pm
UCL has amassed the largest collection in Myanmar since separating from the official Yangon Uni. Library in 1987. Besides the hundreds of thousands of Myanmar and English books, they carry well-preserved historical Myanmar manuscripts written on palm-leaf and a parabike, a traditional hand-made paper. There is no cost for membership.
YANGON UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
? Adipati Rd on the University of Yangon Campus | P Mon-Fri 9:30am-4:30pm
Yangon University Library has been reconstructed a number of times leaving it with a modern look. Not as big as UCL, but still has a sizeable Burmese collection. Anyone is allowed to come in to read the predominately academic texts. However, only students and faculty are allowed to take books home. Independent Researchers can get a library card via special request.
BURMESE CHINESE LIBRARY
? Address: 628 Mahabandoola Road, Latha Township, Yangon | P Tues-Sat 10am-5pm
This Chinese library is hidden away in the Chinatown district of Downtown Yangon. An almost hidden staircase leads you up to the first floor where the main library is situated. Chinese locals sit around large wooden tables, reading Mandarin and Cantonese language newspapers, as well as books from the library’s extensive collection. It is hard to not stare off of the traditional balcony over looking Mahabandoola Road. The library was opened in 1963 by a group of Burmese-Chinese sponsors wanting to preserve Chinese heritage and provide a community space. The chief librarian is 92 year old Mr. Yip, who has lived in Yangon for 69 years.
TRIPITAKA LIBRARY (PITAKA LIBRARY) ? Kabar Aye Complex, Kabar Aye Pagoda Rd.
While it may be located near the bustle of Kabar Aye Road, a thick of trees make it easy to miss Tripitaka Library. Soon after gaining independence, the library was a national treasure built in dedication of Theravada Buddhism. It still contains thousands of original Buddhist texts written on traditional paper. Entrance is not guaranteed but putting the camera away and having a translator could improve the odds.
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MYANMAR
? 85 Thirimingalar Yeiktha Ln, Kabar Aye Rd, Yankin Township | P Tues-Sat 10am-4pm
The National Library in Yangon is open to everyone. The books are all Myanmar materials and quite old. The N.L is a good resource for those who want to read texts Burmese texts from 1950s until the 2000s.

? 36th and Merchant Street | P Mon-Fri 9am-4pm

Bubbling High Quality Akakara Japanese Hot Pot Restaurant BY CLIFF LONSDALE ATMOSPHERE After leaving the hot air of evening traffic, I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by staff in what may be the coldest restaurant in the world, with the air conditioning on high. It wasn’t long before the temperature balanced itself as the room filled up with numerous pots of simmering soup, each expelling their steamy aromas into the cold air. A glance behind the curtain into the kitchen, showed a vision of brand spanking new equipment, cleanliness and hygiene, a wonderful sight that would put any nervous diner at ease. RECOMMENDATIONS Being no expert at this, it seemed only right to go for the main draw, which is the hot pot. I took the beginner route and chose a ready-made selection of meats, seafood and vegetables, at a very reasonable price of 9800 Ks, as opposed to hand picking ingredients. From a choice of three soup bases I selected the Akakara Soup, with my waiter suggesting a spice level of 3 out of the 10-clearly there were some doubts as to my propensity for heat. The meal was excellent, tasty, wholesome and very filling. The theatre of the service, and audience the participation of hotpot makes it always a fun way to eat. The menu extends far beyond the hot pot offering, and includes noodle dishes, tempura and teriyaki. FINAL THOUGHTS It can be difficult to order hotpot with a language barrier but overall it was a lovely meal. A mixture of Japanese and Myanmar, young and old, families and work colleagues – it has a good following, and is absolutely the kind of place you could bring a gang of pals and get stuck into a big pot of bubbling high quality, well priced food. Address: 300 Kabaraye Pagoda Road, Ga Mone Pwint Shopping Mall, Myangone Township, Yangon. Phone: 0653653 ext. 8080

Best Burgers & Fish’n Chips Pepper’s Diner BY TWINKLE WHAT IT IS This is the newest branch of the already well-known Pepper's Diner. Located on East Race Course Road, it’s well placed and easy to get to. It serves a mixture of Western and Thai food. They’ve also recently added Mexican food to their menu. ATMOSPHERE I have been to other locations of Pepper's quite a few times. The food is always good and the price reasonable. As usual, this Pepper’s has the feel of an open airy space, and overall has a good vibe. The staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient. RECOMMENDATIONS From my previous Pepper’s visits, I can say that burgers and fish & chips have always been a big hit. I also love their salads both Western and Thai, especially Lab Moo (Thai style minced pork salad). This time, my friend and I tried the newly added Nachos and it was brilliant. We were also recommended to have the Grilled Pork Rib, which was tender and succulent. The sauce was superb too. We also had the usual all-time favourite, Green Salad with Crispy Chicken, and it was as good as ever. The Mixed Grill, however, wasn't very attractive. The meat was a on the tough side and difficult to cut. Apart from that, the food was as good as was expected. FINAL THOUGHTS Pepper’s Diner is great for individuals and groups who want to choose different dishes. It has a huge selection of one-plate meals and fast-food style meals. The portions are generous. It is hard to put together a threecourse meal though. Each of us ordered what we wanted and everything was fine until we attempted to share! We found that the dishes didn't compliment each other. With the prices ranging from 3000Ks to 18000Ks, Pepper’s is definitely affordable. Address: 38/40 Bo Yar Nyunt Streeet, Yaw Min Gyi Quarter, Dagon Township, Yangon. Phone: 01 512 423 | Opening Hours: 9:30AM to 9:30PM
