PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION Artist Statement CATHERINE GRISS I am a traveller and a photographer. I live and work in Paris. I decided to come to Burma and Yangon because of its British colonial style heritage and because of this special time of emerging democracy in a world of increasing globalisation. The theme of this exhibition is the old world’s presence in the beginning of a new world. There are three main themes: The Evolution of Yangon examines the walls of old and new buildings, river banks and lifestyles; The Golden Pagodas focuses on the people who visit the pagodas, taking time out to find peace in the golden halls of the Shwedagon Paya; and The Readers documents Myanmar people’s love of reading – walking through downtown, I noticed many people catching up with news or getting lost in a book, a culture that seems to be vanishing with the advent of mobile phones. © Catherine Griss 19 November 2015

Traditional Japanese BBQ Takumi-Ya @ Novotel Hotel By Monika Traikov What Is It Tucked away on the third floor of the prestigious Novotel hotel, Takumi-Ya is an intimate, yet welcoming Japanese restaurant. The speciality is a traditional Japanese BBQ, called Yakinuru, featuring the highest quality of beef imported from Japan. Takumi-Ya also offers Shabu-shabu hot pot, as well as a variety of soups, rice dishes, and simple yet delicious side dishes. Although a bit pricey, Takumi-Ya is worth it. Atmosphere The restaurant is elegant and intimate, with small spotlights highlighting each table, playful cherry blossoms, and waves painted along the walls giving the restaurant a unique visual interest. Recommendations We started with an assorted selection of Kimchi Mirawase (US$9) which included an extremely fresh and bright selection of Chinese cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, and radish kimchi. The Chonregi Salad (US$7), was perfectly simple, a fresh lettuce salad topped with grated carrots, cucumber and sesame seeds, splashed with a flavourful dressing. The Wagyu Kukkeshai (Beef Tartare, US$22) was exquisite, with grated apple, cucumber, and lime complementing the tender texture. The highlight of the meal was the Yakinuru set (US$75); mouth watering beef cuts, seafoods and ready to grill vegetables, each with their own unique texture and flavour. The standout cuts; a Kurogebeef A-3 Sirloin, and Kurogebeef A-4 Torokarubi short rib, which, paired with the grilled vegetables and dipping sauce, brought out the simple flavours of the meat. The enjoyment of grilling the meat ourselves while sipping on warm house sake (US$8), gave the meal a more playful and collaborative feel. Final Thoughts Takumi-Ya serves extremely high quality meat, and simple, thought out dishes. If you are a beef lover, you need to try the variety of Yakinuru at Takumi-Ya. Because of the price range, Takumi-Ya is not an everyday restaurant. It is best suited for a special night out, or business lunch. Novotel Hotel - 459 Pyay Road, Kamayut Tsp

Taste Of All Things Asian Spice Brasserie @PARKROYAL By Cliff Lonsdale WHAT IT IS Park Royal Spice Brasserie serves the best Chicken Tikka Masala I’ve eaten in Myanmar. Quite possibly the best I’ve eaten ever, and I’ve eaten a few in my time. But that is jumping ahead a little; there is a lot to address before getting to the main event. ATMOSPHERE There is no disguising the fact that this is hotel restaurant, it’s a vast area of 300 seats, and the ‘musak’ piped from the ceiling does nothing to improve the ambience. The few guests that are eating here are outnumbered two to one by waiters, which isn’t a bad thing though, as it means that the service is impeccable. RECOMMENDATIONS For my first of many forays to the buffet I am guided to the salad bar, laden with fresh produce and numerous varieties of Asian salads, which include typical Myanmar fare, such as Lahpet Thoke, Thayet Chin Thoke, and an attractive Jellyfish Salad. At the BBQ I select only the sticks of Satay Chicken and Okra in the knowledge that I need to pace myself, I add a small Rice Noodle and Clam Soup that is again prepared in front of me, and delivered to the table when complete. The Paneer Butter Masala is luxurious, the Paneer just the right consistency to provide a pleasurable mouthful, the sauce pleasingly spiced. I leave the best until last, the Chicken Tikka Masala. Moist pieces of chicken breast are perfectly cooked and exquisitely served in a rich sauce that leaves just the right amount of spice in the tongue to linger long after. Fabulous. FINAL THOUGHTS The Indian food alone is worth the price of US$32, sadly this only includes one soft drink in the package, a curry of this order deserves a beer as the perfect accompaniment. Food of such a high standard, and of such variety is rare in Myanmar, and I imagine the Park Royal Brasserie will become a ‘must-visit’ location on a Thursday night for those that enjoy a taste of all things Asian. Park Royal Hotel serves the Spice Road Buffet every Thursday between 7pm and 9:30pm. 33 Alan Pya Phaya Road, Dagon Township, Yangon. Ph: 95 1 250 388

throwback: postcard

De Souza Pharmacy, Dalhousie street (1961) This postcard is of the once-prosperous De Souza Pharmacy building. This building is still standing in Mahabandoola Road (old address was 475 Dalhousie Street), just west of Sule Pagoda. It is now occupied by the Accounts Division of Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications. The postcard was printed before 1964, as the Maung Ko & Bros Watch showroom was still there then. On the opposite side would be the A Swe Daw watch showroom. The signs on the De Souza building read, “You can rely on De Souza for the genuine medicine.” Rangoon was once home to a community of Goans (from then-Portuguese Goa). De Souza Pharmacy was one of the biggest Goan businesses in the city. Unfortunately, the portico on the building was demolished. There was a dental clinic run by Mr de Souza in the building where my parents use to take me for my dental check-ups or treatment up till 1963, after which Mr de Souza had to close his clinic and leave the country. Back then, Dr/Mr de Souza’s dental clinic was the best in Yangon. Text: Harry Hpone Thant
