ice cream guide
Your Guide t0 Ice Cream & ice cream-like food The temperature in Yangon has been hovering around 105 degrees for the past few days and everybody is on their nerve because of the heat. Thankfully, the rain has come early for Yangon. The overcast and pools of water on the pavement make a cone of ice cream less pressing, but you never know when the day will be hot as hell again, so keep these places in mind. Gelatos (less creamy, denser ice cream) and sorbet included.
SWENSEN’S Branch 1: Dagon Center II, Myay Ni Gone, Sanchaung Township Branch 2: Junction Maw Tin, Lanmadaw Township Branch 3: Ocean Center(Shwe Gone Taing), Tarmwe Township
Swensen’s is the big international ice cream chain restaurant in town. It offers a wide variety of ice cream - more so than any other shops. As much varieties they have for ice cream, they also offer quite a list of toppings. You can also have quite a varieties of toppings at a time but you may have to pay for extra toppings.
ICE CREAM BAR Branch 1: No 135, corner of Inya Road and Dhamazedi Road Branch 2: Corner of 14th Street and Mahabandoola Road Branch 3: Junction Mawtin Branch 4:Junction Square Branch 5:Juction Zawana Branch 6: City Mart Thamine Center
Well, Ice Cream Bar is not exactly a bar. It is a place where the main products are ice cream. Ice Cream Bar has quite a few branches. The ice cream they have offer are relatively good compare to their prices. Their strawberry sundae is my favourite.
ICE MANIAS Padonmar Street, Sanchaung Township
Ice Manias is a Thai origin shop which specialises in selling fried ice cream or typically known in Thai as I-Tim Pad. To give an short description of what it is,the ice cream, together with some kind of fruits, is mixing and
mashed on a plate that is cold enough to freeze water over. After mashing is spread out into a square and when it freezes over, it is then rolled. This type of ice cream is unique in Myanmar and I believe is the only shop which sells such kind.
SCOOP PREMIUM ITALIAN ICE CREAM Junction Square Shopping Centre, Kyun Taw Road, Yangon
Scoop is one the best ice cream places in town. As the name suggest, it is authentic Italian ice cream - as in the ice cream are made from Italian recipe. The ingredients used in the process of making ice cream are of the best quality and the freshest. Scoop boasts of its ice cream which are free of any preservatives or artificial colouring. Moreover, Scoop’s ice creams contains low fats but they are thicker and creamier which make them more delicious to eat.
FROZEE GELATO CREAMERY 23 Nawaday Road, Yaw Min Gyi Ward, Dagon Township
Frozen Gelato Creamery is an Italian gelato shop where the ingredients, which are used to make the gelato, are all imported from Italy. As such, the authenticity of the ice cream is not a question. You do not need to go to Italy to have true Italian Gelato. You can have it at Frozee Gelato Creamery.
SHWE PU ZUN Branch 1: 79 corner of 9th Street & Anawrahta Road, Lanmadaw Township Branch 2: Junction Square ( Secret Garden ), Pyay Road, Kamaryut Township Branch 3: 14a Min Nandar Road, Dawbon Township
A bakery, that is well-known both among the locals and expats, has offered not only breads and buns but also desserts. Although they offer ice cream, ice cream is not its specialty; it is faluda - a mixture of jellies, milk, ice cream and rose syrup. Faluda is a must try there.
SHARKY’S Branch 1: 117, Dhamazedi Road Yangon, Myanmar Branch 2: No. 81 Pansodan Street, between Maha Bandula Road and Merchant Road, Kyauktada Township
I have say that Sharky’s is not really an ice cream parlour. It is hybrid between a Western restaurant and a bakery but they also serve gelatos - high Sharky's grade ones at that. Each scoop costs 3000-3500 kyats. Compare to other ice cream parlours, Sharky’s does not have much choices. However, they do have regular flavour such as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. Apart from those, they also have more unique flavour such as rum raisin. There are a number of ice cream that you can just walk in to refresh yourself. But sometimes, he may want ice cream from a supermarket or a convenient store. IF that is the case, you should be on a lookout for two local brands: Htoo and KYK. Among all the local ice cream, they are among the best and they can be bought pretty much any supermarkets or convenient store. However, if you feel like you do not want to eat a locally made ice cream, you can always have Wall. They are available in some convenient store such as City Express.

The Bar Burdubai: Watering Hole For The Young BY TWINKLE KHAING MON
WHAT IS IT - Could be called a themed bar and restaurant. As the name suggests, half of the place is fashioned like an Arabian tent, complete with Arabic Majlis, the low couches common in middle eastern countries. We didn't get shisha here but the outside seating area is filled with those that do. ATMOSPHERE - The themed bar cushy displays only account for half the place, which means the comfy Majlis are taken quickly. We had a regular table which is better for meals but too boring in a place setting as fancy as this one..... The place was packed and every one seemed to know what is available that is not on the menu. The music is too noisy for dinner but doesn’t feel quite like a bar but no one cares. In fact, it seemed to be how people prefer. A lot of local youths hang out at BurDubai making the general atmosphere fun if anything else. There are kids taking selfies and wearing Arabic headdresses while a football match is on RECOMMENDATION - We decided to let our waiter do the ordering. Oh, man! That's the best decision we have ever made! He brought out two beautiful cocktails which weren't listed in the menu: Blue Russian and Bikini Martini. That was when I found out menus are not much used here. The waiter then brought their seemingly regular dishes. We tried the crispy chicken with spicy sauce and their signature BurDubai chicken country soup (4500 Ks). They were both very good. The crispy chicken wasn't very crispy but the sauce was fantastic. The best ever was their Flaming Sambuca. It was different from other flaming Sambuca (6000 Ks) that I have tried. Then there were the syringe cocktails, regular ocktails sold by (literal) shots, in needles instead of glasses. FINAL THOUGHTS - All in all, it's worth spending your evening here if you're ok with an irregular bar and a place filled with young folks. Remember to ask your waiter what's new and popular as the menu is pretty useless. Ours said that they update their items regularly on their Facebook page so it might be a good idea to check too. Or just let them surprise you. 98D Inya Road, Kamayut Township, Yangon.

Poultry Appreciation At Moe Thiri BY CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER
WHAT IT IS - On first glance, the racks of summer dresses and leather purses allow Moe Thiri to pass for a clothing store. The garments are indeed for sale but are not the reason why this muslim Chinese-Burmese restaurant is a dining gem for the neighborhood of Kantawkalay. The real reason you come to Moe Thiri is for the duck. Owner Daw Nang Shin describes her menu simply as Chinese-Burmese, but upon further questioning the cuisine is specifically a mix of Yunnan and Shan. ATMOSPHERE - A friend of mine casually called Moe Thiri a 'tea shop' which is a lazy reference, in my view, to the open-air layout and social nature between customers and staff. Plus a meal here is around 4500 Ks which is above the price of eating at a tea shop. It is more of a diner than anything else. The brick wallpaper, plaid table clothes and images of religious text on the walls parallel a classic American diner, in my mind. Decor aside, the interior is well-manicured despite being in a heavily littered part of town. THE FOOD & DRINK - No alcohol at Moe Thiri, or pork as the Islamic art on the walls suggest. It's the Roast Duck Salad (3500 Ks) that should be tried by everyone who wants to try something different. A plate of bite-sized pieces of dark meat that have been cooked in a mix of garlic, onion, basil and pennywort...but mainly garlic. It a surprisingly light dish even with a portion of steamed rice, a recommended add-on... Thai Style Chicken (sweet & spicy in flavour) and Stir-Fried Chicken (spicy & sour in flavour) are the fan favourites according to Daw Nang Shin. If we are discussing chicken dishes, I will have to disagree with the crowd and point to their Kachin Style Chicken (3500 Ks) as being a far more memorable meal. FINAL THOUGHTS - Quite a few expats are unaware that Yangon has street numbers that go as high as 91st (they go well into the 120s for the record). Even less know about the neighborhood of Kantawkalay. Yet this ethnically diverse neighborhood with gridded-streets like downtown is more central than one may think. A short walk from Upper Pansodan or a 5 minute cab ride if near Kandawgyi Park. Daw Nang Shin welcomes all. 43 Daw Thein Tin Road (Near 91st Street) // 01394909
