Sydney’s Home Baked Goods, charming tastiness all rolled up into one BY PHONE DEPAR MIN Give yourself a little sweet at Sydney’s Home Baked Goods or as known as Sydney’s Cupcakes. The shop is widely recognized among the native Yangonites due to its relatively affordable prices and their delicious goodies are sure to tingle the senses. The outlet is pretty small but cozy, giving warm and pleasant feeling with yellow lighting and modern decoration. However, the vast majority of people just order in and either have them delivered or just come to the shop to pick it up for their convenience. What awaited us was a collection of no less than 3 muffins, 3 cupcakes and what looked to be a brownie accompanied by a pretty sizeable cookie. Starting off with the 3 muffins; namely Banana, Chocolate and Blueberry, are first on the scene. All coming in at 1,700 kyats each, the common names do belie quite the scrumptious serving. As a chocolate lover myself, the Chocolate Muffin was one I tried, followed by Banana and Blueberry. The blueberry muffin stood out, the aftertaste in particular being very refreshing. The Chocolate and Banana muffins tasted as much as you would expect, the chocolate having a sharp tang and the banana being of a somewhat bland fixture. Next on the sweet line that I tried was the Vanilla Cupcake for 1,200 kyats. It was delightful to eat and even more delicious was the Carrot Cupcake. I positively recommend it. The last one, which is also one of the most popular cupcakes, is the Red Velvet (1,200 kyats). To top it off, the cookie and the brownie were downed with gusto; I would recommend them on lieu of the brownie’s utterly soft texture and the cookie’s crunchiness. After the meal, I could not help but bought some of their delicious bites for my friends, which came in a pretty light blue box. The shop also offers specialized custom orders, events, and catering. The Lodge Yangon Bar: Casual Rooftop Downtown BY IRIS ALONSO Along Lanmadaw, atop a newly renovated hotel, four blocks from 19th Street and eight levels above ground, your next nightlife nest awaits at The Lodge Yangon Bar. The place has just been opened during monsoon season— bold move, and we thank them for it. On nights that aren’t pouring, when the wind is cold and the sky is clear, it would be nice to have some hot soup and cold beer. The place is spacious with modern decoration. The seatings are divided into several zones; bar zone, group tables, and couple seats over looking the busy downtown view. I started my evening with the Long Island Iced Tea (5,000 ks) which was a great starter to kick off my TGIF. The service was amazing at 8:00 pm when I was only one of very few customers. The waiter attended to me dutifully. The crowd got thicker and the music got louder as the night got darker. At around 10:00 pm, the place was packed with a mixture of both local and foreigners crowd.U Wai Phyo Maung, or Richy as he prefers to be called, says that we can expect a grand opening some time on the last week of July. Even though the place does not identify as a restaurant, they still serve a satisfactory spread of snacks. I ordered Chicken Satay (4,000 ks) as a starter. Next was the Raw Shrimp Salad (6,000 ks) which was full of flavors, perfect for spicy lovers. The Hot & Sour Soup (3,500 ks) warms up a chilly night after rain. Each dish is meant to complement drinks, but ordering all three had sufficed for a complete dinner. I ended my evening with some Myanmar Premium Beer (1,500 ks) with some new friends. The open air and open space allows for such socializing and I definitely recommend The Lodge Yangon Bar for frequent casual nights out.
