Golden Pho
Great Vietnamese on Yaw Min Gyi BY YUKO MASKAY WHAT IT IS Golden Pho is a new Vietnamese restaurant located downtown on the bustling street of Yaw Min Gyi, well-known for its trendy restaurants and cafes. The dishes were created with Vietnamese street food in mind, with a modern touch of high-quality ingredients and minimal use of oil by co-owner Kellie Pham, an Australian Vietnamese. This restaurant, which opened only three months ago, is already a buzz with both locals and foreigners. ATMOSPHERE Classy, yet inviting, with soft, warm lighting and modern Vietnamese art pieces and decor, Golden Pho is a great place for first dates or talking business over lunch. For lunch (or dinner), one can enjoy a baguette or coffee, made Vietnamese style, On weekends, making a reservation is highly recommended. RECOMMENDATION Appetizer was Sugar Cane Prawn, jumbo prawns freshly selected from the local market and wrapped around a sugar cane stick that can be dipped into home-made fish sauce. It that can be ordered with two or four skewers and at 6,000 Ks (for four skewers), it may be considered a tad expensive, but it’s worth it. Main entree was the spicy Lemon Grass Beef with dry noodles and The Lot Beef Pho. Both dishes ensure that the beef is cut from the best parts and that the soup doesn’t sit too long and get salty, courtesy of their Vietnamese chef, Don. Tender and juicy, the Lot Beef Pho, known to cure hangovers with its five spices, combines three types of beef – rare, cooked and minced – for your pleasure. The Grilled Pork Baguette rolled with pickled vegetables and chicken pate, was crusty, yet soft to bite. PRICE RANGE: Lemon Grass Beef with dry noodles (4,000 Ks), Lot Beef Pho (6,000 Ks), The Grilled Pork Baguette (3,500),Plum Juice (2,500 Ks), Mint Lime Crush Juice (2,500), Vietnamese Coffee (3,000) FINAL THOUGHTS: Delectable, high-quality Vietnamese food with good service and atmosphere, With its commitment to using the best local and imported ingredients. Great for anyone seeking a bite of pho heaven. No.62 (A-4), Yaw Min Gyi Street, Dagon Township, Yangon. 01 254 957 Daily 11.00 AM – 10.00PM

Port Autonomy Saturday Brunch BY GEORGIA GRAHAM Why do brunch on a Sunday when you could do it on Saturday?? $30 a head for a choice of meal and free flow drinks 11am – 4pm. This could be dangerous! The notorious old Le Planteur residence that houses the alluring palm tree clad, neon sign, open-air Port Autonomy now does the only “Saturday brunch” in town. The ‘Brunch Package’ offers up a variety of different breakfast options from a Full English to Korean Fried Chicken and Waffle, to a sensational Shakshuka with a toasted Ciabatta. I went for the Full English and was highly impressed with the quality and quantity of it! Perfectly cooked sausages, delicious bacon and sautéed butter mushrooms were some of the highlights of this hard to perfect dish. The pièce de résistance of the PA Brunch is the free flow of drinks, including draught beers, margaritas and mimosas. The Bloody Mary’s are a particular fave and I am a gal who knows her Bloody Mary’s! With a vegetable puree added to the tasty tomato juice mix and the perfect amount of spice, you’ll get all the nutrients needed to nurse that nasty hangover. The concept for PA was thought up by Ivan Punn and Kevin when they met in Beijing a few years back: strive to serve the best dishes from around the world in a unpretentious, fun environment. Chef Kevin Ching has been whipping up tasty fusion food at PA since its previous tenancy on the riverfront, keeping it firmly on the map in Yangon. Previously trained at The Cordon Bleu in Bangkok, Ching knows his fusion food and make it tasty he certainly does! I love the vibe at PA and I LOVE the food, but I’m just not massively in love with the prices. Although the Brunch is a spanking deal I wish the mid-week options could be more affordable. At US$15 for a sandwich it’s taking my food vs. spending a bit too far. That said, I will go again and again to PA as it certainly knows how to have fun! 22A Kabar Aye Pagoda road, Bahan Township. 09253710651 Tuesday – Saturday Food: 5.00 PM – 11.00 PM Sunday (Brunch) 11.00 AM – 5.00 Pm Mondays closed.
