A Boat in Phaungdawoo Festival. (Gerd Eichmann)

Myanmar festivals in October BY JESSICA LIANG  Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival, Inle Lake (October 10 – 17) This festival runs for 18 days every year. Four gilded Buddha images are carried on a large hintha bird boat to 14 villages around Inle Lake, while one Buddha image remains at the pagoda. The festival reaches its peak when the images arrive at the main town of Nyaung Shwe, where many pilgrims come by boat to pay their respects. Hundreds of long boats rowed by leg-rowers can be seen everywhere on the lake.  Kyauktawgyi Pagoda Festival, Mandalay (October 20 – 24) One of the largest pagoda festivals in Mandalay, the celebration focuses around Kyauktawgyi Pagoda which houses a big seated Buddha figure sculpted from marble. The festival is known for its food and crafts market as well as magic shows and other performances that take place at the foot of Mandalay Hill.

 Indein Festival, Inle Lake (October 20 – 24) Near the village of Indein is Shwe Indein Pagoda, a cluster of mostly 17th and 18th century pagodas situated on the west bank of Inle Lake. Ruins of Bagan and Shan style stupas were recently discovered, the earliest built in the 14th century. The festival is held in the shrine complex of the site.  Elephant Festival, Kyaukse (October 23 – 25) This elephant dancing festival usually takes place one day before a full moon and is held 50 kilometers from Mandalay in Kyaukse. As part of the celebration two people dance in rhythm to music amid life-sized elephant figures. The entire town takes part in the dancing and creates elephant effigies.  Thadingyut Festival, the entire country (October 23 – 25) Known as the lighting festival, Thadingyut is held at the end of Buddhist. The festival is held on the full moon day of the Burmese lunar month of Thadingyut and concludes after three days. As the second largest festival in Myanmar after Thingyan, the festival is countrywide with houses and streets illuminated by electric lights, candles, and paper lanterns. Some people shoot fireworks and launch fire balloons as well as pay homage to the elderly and ask for pardon for their misdeeds.

new opening

Malaysian bites at 96 Bistro BY MIN YE KYAW The newly opened 96 Bistro is a fun, small eatery serving Malaysian fare orbited by a few international dishes. Acting as both cafe and bar in the foodie hub that is Yaw Min Gyi, 96 Bistro has a signature nasi lemak—rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf—served three different ways: egg (2,800 kyats), fried chicken (4,200 kyats) or curried chicken (4,500 kyats). Classic Malaysian noodle dish char kway teow (3,900 kyats) comes with chicken or prawns and a very spicy kick, while the chicken satay is worth trying—especially now, because the price is temporarily down from 4,500 kyats to 2,250 kyats. The cafe also serves Japanese mackerel (sabas), some Western dishes and desserts. Thai teas, coffee, and beers are all reasonably priced. As an opening promotion, Bistro 96 (the second ‘96’ branch in Yangon following 96 Cafe) is offering 20 percent off on food, buy two get one free on Hoegaarden beer, and buy three get one free on draught beer until the end of October.
