7TH JOINT BAR & GRILL JAMAICAN NO MISTAKE BY MAX TOOMEY
WHAT IT IS A Jamaican bar in Yangon that’s not trying to be anything other than what it is. There is a wall covered in images of Bob Marley, high tables with barstools and very large speakers down one end of the room. 7th Joint is very much somewhere that is ‘fun’ rather than polished, and it’s all the better for it.
ATMOSPHERE Talk to any of the seven owners – you can pretty much guarantee that at least one of them will be there any night of the week – and you get two senses of 7th Joint: it’s a reggae bar where you can eat Jamaican food, and it’s a bar that you'd want their friends drinking in. None of them have owned a bar before, and oddly, I think it’s a good thing. There’s a sort of joyous optimism to everything. Every now and then a lady wanders around with free shots on a tray, because that seems like a nice idea.
RECOMMENDATION Proper Jamaican rum is hard to come by, so it’s best to ask at the bar to see if any has been recently brought in. Replacing regular Jamaican rum is whiskey with coconut water, inspired by Trinidad and named ‘CPD’ after three friends of the bar – Craig, Paul and Danica. I’ve never thought of mixing the two together and whilst I’m not going to start doing it at home it did work. The green grass ice tea – tequila, gin, vodka, rum and melon liqueur – was fruity and sweet – like a lot of the cocktails on offer (we also tried the Melon Crush or the mysterious Yellow Bird). If you like sweet cocktails you’re in luck, the drinks menu is catered towards your taste buds. If you’re not such a fan there’s bourbon, tequila and whiskey (with or without coconut water) in sufficient supply. The food fills you up. The squid tempura was actually pretty good, the batter fluffy. The jerked chicken was tender but lacked flavour while the burger was tasty but let down by the rather banal bun. All this said, I’m not sure food was ever mean to be the point of this place.
FINAL THOUGHTS 7th Joint is not slick and the bar stools definitely prioritise function over comfort. The guys have built a bar because they wanted somewhere they would enjoy drinking with their friends. If you walk in you’re now a friend. G-A10, Shwe Asia Building, Corner of 48th street and Mahabandula Road, Botataung Township | Tel: 09 260600552 | 5pm onwards daily

Film Screening
Metropolis
Film Concert With Two Pianos The Goethe-Institut is proud to contribute the newly restored and completed version of Metropolis to the Memory Film Festival 2015 in Yangon. The silent movie classic will be screened on the 6th of June at the National Theater of Yangon, together with live accompaniment on two grand pianos by Pierre Oser and Katja Brandl from Munich, Germany. This film concert of 180 minutes duration promises to be an unforgettable highlight of the festival. Fritz Lang’s (1890-1976) monumental film Metropolis was premiered in the Berlin of the Golden Twenties (1927), and is one of the great masterpieces of the early German cinema. It tells the story of a gigantic megalopolis of the future that is inhabited by two sharply separated classes, a small upper crust enjoying the luxury of the wonderful gardens and palaces, and the enormous masses of slave workers who care around the clock, down below in the dark, for the smooth functioning of the city on the surface. Freder, the son of the master of Metropolis, on the occasion of an accident visits one of the immense underworld factories, and meets and falls in love – how could it be any different – with Maria, the leader of the oppressed workers. Together they decide to end the cruel divide between those above and those below. Freder’s father sees in this plan an end to his power and orders the construction of an android robot that looks and behaves exactly like Maria. The machine Maria is given the order to dissuade Freder by any means from his revolutionary intentions.
Metropolis is a movie of superlatives, it can be seen as the first feature length science fiction film in the history of cinema. At two and a half hours duration it is the longest and by far the most expensive film production of its time. And not less grand is the sharp contrast between its assessment by its contemporaries and its estimation today. In the 1920s Metropolis economically (not least because of the Great Depression) became a grandiose flop, and as an artwork it was scathingly reviewed by many critics. H.G.Wells called it ‘quite the silliest film’ he had ever had seen. The New Yorker pointed out ‘the terrible Teutonic heaviness,’ others could see ‘nothing but clichés, cheap sentiments and dreadful kitsch’. However, over the ninety years since its premiere, Metropolis underwent a radical new perception and is now seen as ‘one of the great achievements of the silent era, a work so audacious in its vision and so angry in its message that it is, if anything, more powerful today than when it was made’. The Empire magazine in 2010 ranked it as No. 12 of ‘the 100 Best Films Of World Cinema’. Since 2001 Metropolis is (together with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony) part of the UNESCO Documentary Heritage.
The Two Piano Players Katja Brandel: Born in Munich, playing the piano since the age of five, studied music in Munich and Würzburg, winner of numerous awards, international pianistic performances. Pierre Oser: Lives and works as a composer, musician and conductor in Munich / Germany Jazz School Munich, classical piano study in Mainz and Munich.
