Not all Myanmar restaurants serve ‘Burmese’ food. There are seven other large minority groups and hundreds of smaller ethnicities, all of which is reflected in the nation's diverse cuisine. Fortunately, you don't have to travel outside of Yangon to try the ethnic cuisines of Myanmar. Thanks to EAT Myanmar, a local restaurant association, traditional cuisines are being preserved and promoted throughout the Yangon dining scene.
HA TAI WA [WA]
? No. 10, Aung Thukha St | 9 Mile
At the moment, this is the only Wa restaurant in Yangon, and they well aware of the niche. Waiters are clothed head to toe in traditional dress, and decor and photos are strictly Wa related. Food is presented on a round rattan tray lined with banana leaves and you can opt to sit on the floor at low tables for a more authentic experience. Dishes here are expensive, and the rice set costs about 20,000 Ks.
SHA YI [KACHIN]

Although rarely super busy, SHA YI serves some excellent and authentic Kachin recipes, complete with a focus on regional spicy, sour and salty flavour combinations. At under 8,000 Ks for one person, it doesn’t leave a big hole in your wallet.

With a plain, sanitary-looking interior only embellished by some textile table mats and curtains, this modest restaurant has some of the best Kachin food in town, and for quite cheap at below 10,000 Ks per person.

Fish, lobster and crabs from Rakhine State (known for excellent seafood) are flown in everyday to these lively local restaurants to be steamed, fried or curried, and served with green chili sauce. You pick your main dish straight from the tank, so you know it’s fresh. Prices vary from 500 - 15,000 Ks, depending on whether you’re getting a small salad or a full lobster.
SHAN YOE YAR [SHAN]

Situated in a large wooden house, this is an upscale Shan eatery offering a fine dining experience. Apart from the delicious but standard fare such as curry, Shan noodles and soups, some more obscure menu items you should definitely try include ‘pounded’ salads and pork sashimi (partially cooked). One person can eat here for around 15,000 Ks.

Warmly lit with welcoming staff, it’s a tight squeeze inside, but that only adds to the homey vibe of this restaurant that specializes in inexpensive Mon food and traditional snacks. Mon State, which borders Thailand, is known for its curries and combined sour, salty and spicy flavours, often from tamarind and shrimp paste.

A hole-in-the-wall offering great value; two people can easily eat their fill here for under two dollars. Noodles come in soup (myi shay) and salad (shan kauk swe), and both options are quite oily as Shan cuisine would have it. There is a second branch in the Hledan Centre which is still the process of establishing itself.
THE RIH LAKE [CHIN]

It’s one of the only Chin restaurants in Yangon. Soups priced around 2,000 - 4,000 Ks are central on the menu, usually hearty and spicy as Chin cuisine tends to be, and filled with corn, beans and chicken or pork. On the second floor, there is a souvenir shop selling traditional Chin costumes and trinkets.

The menu doesn’t have any particular focus, but instead encompasses ethnic dishes from all over Myanmar, making ‘the national restaurant’ a good introduction for foreigners to different regional cuisines. At about 15,000 Ks an entree, this restaurant is pricier than most.

Choose Your Rice & Noodles At Rice & Noodles BY GWAN HO TONG
WHAT IT IS – Rice & Noodle is a newly opened restaurant which focuses on providing rice and noodle related dishes as the name indicated. Their signature dishes are of Thai origins considering that the owners are from Tachileik, a place near the Myanmar-Thai borders. However, Rice & Noodle really is an Asian Fusion restaurant. The simplicity of the name is to show the customers that rice and noodle dishes are the specialty. ATMOSPHERE – As simple as the name is, the decoration of the shop itself is also really simple or should I call it minimalistic. The wall has nothing except white paint. Surprisingly, the simple white paint gives out a friendly and homely atmosphere. One unique thing about the restaurant is that the placement of the counters gives out a Thai atmosphere. When you walk into the shop, you will see on your left that there are a juice counter and a grill. RECOMMENDATION – My friend and I had tom yam noodle, rice with roasted duck, 3 meats (a mix of red & crispy pork and roasted duck) and pork BBQ. Among the dishes, I love the tom yam noodle. It comes with 6 different types of noodles and customers can choose any type of noodles of their likings. Taste wise, it is one of the best tom yam noodles I have ever had. It is not overly spicy so you can appreciate the taste without needing water after every bite. 3 meats is also pretty pleasing to eat. Each meat comes with its own dressing. With 3 meats come, there are 3 dressings and you can taste the mixture with either pork or duck. The average price of the dish is 3500-4000 Ks so it is pretty decent considering the taste of the food. Rice & Noodle also added a new dish called “Jumbo Noodle” for 19000 Ks. It is a gigantic dish capable of feeding 4 people. I did not try it since it is too much for me but from the look of at it is one hell of a dish. FINAL THOUGHT – Ending the meal with the grass jelly is a good idea. It helps cope with the spiciness and makes you feel refreshing.
