Rainy Season guide

Preparing For The Rainy Season BY CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER & GWAN HO TONG
The rainy season, or wet season, has come a bit early this year with the ends of Cylcone Roanu slapping against Southern Myanmar. The real monsoons, which come on a daily basis, don't start in earnest until the first week of June, which is now. The weather will thankfully be cooler, but flooded streets come with their own set of challenges that should be addressed before they begin: chiefly, staying dry and avoiding dengue fever.
 UMBRELLA An obvious but necessary suggestion. Get the large cane handled umbrellas instead of the smaller collapsible ones. You want something sturdy that covers your back and front. Most business in Yangon having large pots outside meant for long umbrellas so carrying it around is not that inconvenient.
 MOSQUITO NET Just in case you haven't bought one yet, you should get one now. The highest rates of dengue fever are during the rainy season when there are pools of water everywhere, which are ideal for mosquito breeding. Every bed should have one, you can get a king-size one for 9000 Ks at City Mart or Ruby Mart.
WATERPROOF FOOTWEAR Wearing open-toed footwear is always acceptable in Myanmar, this includes the rainy season. When wading through shin-deep moats off of every curbside you don't want to be wearing your favourite pair of socks. Rubber rain boots seen in the west are unfortunately not local custom. Make sure to buy flip flops that are waterproof and slip proof. Alternatively, you can buy nylon sneakers or hiking sandals which will protect your feet better and give you more traction, finding a pair will involve leaving Myanmar though. Then there are Crocs, of course....
RAINCOAT Yes, it is time for long sleeves. Nothing fancy of course, a simple poncho or wind-breaker does the job fine, but something that is easy to take on and off.
QUICK DRY CLOTHING Polyester or nylon are the best choices for the rainy season since water bounces off of them. Linen is the more stylish and comfortable option that still dries quick. Avoid denim and cotton which retain a water for a long time.
BUCKETS This is especially important if you live in an old house where leaks are everywhere. Scan your home, under pipes and drains in particular, for any amount of drip. Place a bucket or any container under a leak, no matter how small, before there is an unwieldy puddle. Change the bucket regularly before mosquitoes can use your own invention as a spawning pool.
FANS You probably have many after the scorching hot season, make sure you keep them. A network of fans will keep away mosquitoes and will dry your clothes in a time where the air is damp. Make sure to fan dry your clothes after being washed.
STREET FOOD, THINK TWICE Locals are a bit more wary street food stalls this time of year. Food is often to covered from the rain or the pools that inevitably collect. Make sure you eat somewhere that properly covers the food and doesn't have any ingredients close to the pavement.

New Chef, New Menu At The Savoy BY CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER
Savoy Hotel has a new head man in the kitchen, Florian Eberhardt, who has kept the popular menu items from his predecessor while adding several choices of his own. The classically trained German chef has worked for hotels throughout Southeast Asia before relocating to Yangon about two months ago. The foreigner favourite burger menu is still intact with a few welcome additions for appreciators of dairy and massive portions. A good time to try one of the eight burgers is on Wednesdays when you can get a free bottle of Tuborg with your order. Burgers aside, their business lunch is probably the best value, offering a three course meal going for $19. The historically-preserved decor and layout of the Savoy is the same. to visit the hotel. The new General Manager is committed to making the bar a more lively area which starts with putting on EuroCup, 10 June. It would have felt wrong to eat at the Savoy without trying one of the new burgers, the Mexican ($18) and the New Yorker ($19) being the recommended choices. Burgers are not usually featured as the entree for the business lunches but are a solid order either way. You better be hungry though- grunting and growling hungry. The New Yorker is a towering structure of starch and meat that is correctly named after an American city, but Charlotte, Houston or another Southern hub may have been more fitting. The crisped balls of mac & cheese, melted cheddar and smoked bacon is what made this meal its own animal. This salty, creamy and extremely hardy meal is perfect for those who are famished, not calorie conscious or possibly hungover. The chicken cordon bleu ($20) was another recommendation from the chef, an item which is consistently available on the regular menu. Crispy flakes, cheesy and with extra ham, this was an extra hardy take on the classic french dish. It is accompanied with a side salad, baby potatoes and sprouts as a garnish. The new Savoy lunch menu is not a small plate tapas experience, but a proper meal that won’t leave you hungry. Colleagues who want to enjoy a long lunch in an upscale environment should come for the two or three course business deal. Old friends should come and grab one of the large burgers and a beer, Wednesdays are recommended. 129 Dhammazedi Road

Wrap City Rolling Healthy BY CHARLIE MICHIO TURNER
Can a food truck survive on the streets already lined with vendors serving local favourites? So far the answer is yes. Yangon is quickly catching up to the west in terms of nightlife, high cost of rent and drunk people – all of which are characteristics that allow for a thriving food trunk. For the past four months, the Wrap City food truck has been weaving through Yangon traffic to sell health-conscious wraps, not to be confused with burritos. Fabian Langendorf started Wrap City to offer a quick bite for people who want something easy to eat and easy to digest. The four menu items, including a vegetarian option, will never be called spicy or oily, something Landendorf hopes will be a welcomed change for many expats. Wrap City is a good choice for families with young children as indicated by the food truck’s success with after school traffic from international elementary schools. Almost all of his ingredients come from Thiri Mingalar and other local markets, the flour wraps are custom orders from the bakery at Mahlzeit. Once he decided he was OK driving a food truck down Dhama Zedi Road during rush hour, he found a Hyundai Porter van which would be the foundation for his enterprise. He retrofitted the vehicle in a span of two months with a refrigerator, freezer, oven, water tank and stainless steel counters to offer a level of sterility that separates distinction Wrap City from other food trucks. Besides all of the fixing necessary for a kitchen, he also installed solar panels to the roof of the car, allowing gas to be saved and exhaust fumes avoided when the truck is idol and serving customers. There were only a couple of food trucks when Langendorf began to consider starting Wrap City, now he’s seen over a dozen selling burgers, coffee and fried rice. No one knows the future of food trucks since they operate in a gray area of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) regulation. Langendorf has had to juggle confusion of local police and the ire of other drivers since starting business, his hope is that his hygienic wraps will win over any detractors. The truck will return this July.
