Chin Ngan Sat: Modern Twist on Kachin Traditional BY MARIE STARR Chin Ngan Sat meaning sour, salty, spicy is the second branch of Kachin restaurants run by a brother- sister duo hailing from Myitkyina, capital of Kachin State. However, the menu at Chin Ngan Sat is not strictly Kachin. Chinese fusion dishes take a notable place and the restaurant owners have put their own spin on many national favourites. Acknowledging that every region has its own style of Mohinga, the Myitkyina Mohinga served at Chin Ngan Sat is different to any other Mohinga I have tried. There is no fish flavour and the gravy is lighter both in flavour and in richness. The addition of pickled vegetables is a tasty nod to Kachin State’s Shan neighbours. It is served all day - or at least until it runs out. ‘Granny salad’ is a delicious combination of textures. Toasted sticky rice and peanuts give the dish a good bite. With these, bamboo shoots and noodles are tossed together with plenty of coriander, dried shrimp and fried onion. It’s a winner. The classic Kachin fish is served in a banana leaf and doesn’t disappoint. It is warm and comforting and with just a little hint of spice. Though the portion was a little smaller than other restaurants, we had so many things to try that we weren’t left hungry. My favourite was a Kachin-Chinese fusion salad called Kaw Bote salad. For this dish, slices of sticky rice are fried until just the slightest crunch forms on the outside yet maintaining a gloriously melty glutinous texture in every bite. It is tossed in a sweetish sauce with peanuts and plenty of sesame seeds to balance out the texture. I will be back to order this again. Juices are served in quirky glass bottles which I’m not sure are a Kachin thing but gives a modern and funky twist. The house special- an apple, carrot and orange combo- is very refreshing and oozes healthiness. All in all, we were very impressed with Chin Ngan Sat’s diversity of flavours, fresh and wholesome ingredients and the brave twist it takes on Kachin food. Khraw Thai BY SOFIA RAINERI Khraw Thai has been open for three months, and is already popular with the locals. Easy to miss, tucked in between busy tea shops on Kyun Taw Road, Khraw Thai aims to bring together Burmese (Shan) and Thai flavours in its dishes. The restaurant is simple and small, with no special décor, just tables and stools. The atmosphere is low-key and relaxed. The menu is extensive, ranging from Thai salads to more adventurous dishes such as deep fried duck mouth. Although they offer a wide variety of meat dishes, Khraw Thai is known for its seafood. Their star dish is the Koong Tung ,a soupy mix of prawns, cuttle fish, corn on the cob, shellfish and mussels cooked in your choice of sauce, the lot is then tipped and nicely arranged on the (plastic) table cloth in front of you to enjoy! This popular concept of eating seafood has become increasingly popular in Bangkok, and has made its way to Yangon, where from the number of costumers that fill the restaurant, it’s a success. It’s a fun, messy way to bring people together over food. Gloves are provided as well as access to an endless supply of paper towels. Aside from the way the dish is served the seafood is very good, and the sauce flavourful, in addition, if you don’t fancy getting your hands dirty you can ask for it to be served on a plate. The restaurant does not go easy on the spice, bringing with most dishes the mouth numbing chilli sensation straight from streets of Thailand. The portions are big and the prices are reasonable, the Koong Tung which can easily be shared between more than two people and is priced at 15,000 MMK, and a whole grilled salted fish will set you back 7,000MMK. Their drink menu offers beers, soft drinks and juices. Overall, Khraw Thai is the perfect place to meet friends over some delicious food which goes hand in hand with a couple of beers.
