Time Out
A Tasty Twist of Fun and Games BY MAY MYAT THU WHAT IS IT Whether you’re looking for a spot to catch up on your favourite sports matches or sip on some classy cocktails, Time Out is the place to be. This bar attracts sports lovers who enjoy Asian and Western cuisines alongside original cocktails. If you’re not a big sports fan, there are dartboards, a pool table, and many other entertainment options to make sure you have fun. ATMOSPHERE The dominant attractions of this bar are the three TV stations with different sports channels playing on each, and the pool table located in the centre. The bar is decorated with sofas and edgy tables to keep the customers comfortable. On the walls and shelves, there are sports posters, trophies, and soccer balls. There are also high chairs to add a more bar-like atmosphere to the place. Time Out provides its customers with a upbeat and exciting feel. RECOMMENDATIONS Order one of their signature cocktails, Twenty-One AV, which was specially formulated by their Bar Manager for the owner’s twenty-first marriage anniversary. It’s a strong mixture of vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and blue curaçao with a twist of lime. If you’re not a fan of alcohol, then the Cranberry Cutie would be a great alternative. This zesty mocktail offers a sweet and refreshing zing. As for food, I recommend their juicy Mini Burger Trio of Beef from their Western menu and their appetising Crispy Calamari with Marinara Sauce from their Eastern Menu. Their satisfying New York Cheese Cake with Raspberry Coulis & Cookie Crumble provides the perfect end to your meal. The best time to go to Time Out would be on the day of a big soccer match, where you can meet enthusiastic fans to enjoy the game with. Price Range:US$8- US$14 Cocktails and Mocktails, US$7-US$18 Finger-Foods and Desserts, FINAL THOUGHTS Time Out is the new hangout place for sports lovers and enthusiasts. It’s a fun place to chill with your friends, get some drinks and play some games. 459 Pyay Road, Kamayut Township, Yangon. Tel: 01 230 5911

Yangon Cinema Guide Yangon’s big cinemas give you the international blockbusters, and we know you love them, but the smaller theatres with their Burmese movies are also worth a look, just to soak up the ambience and see how much the locals enjoy going to the cinema – to see and to be seen! Expect to pay between 1,000Ks and 6,000Ks per ticket.
NAY PYI TAW CINEMA Yangon’s most popular cinema, it screens a lot of foreign movies and sometimes hosts international film festivals. It's 1970s chic, and has 3D offerings and very cool aircon. The local popcorn is worth a try, sweet not salty. It has a great architectural façade that is very funky. ? Sule Pagoda Road (opposite Sule Shangri-LaHotel) t +95 (0) 1 251277, +95 (0) 1 251288
THWIN CINEMA Screens mostly Burmese films, and is more downbeat than the modern complexes. Great place to check out the local scene and soak up the atmosphere. Cheap and homely. ? 309 Bogyote Aung San Road, Kyautata Township t +95 (0) 1 372594, +95 (0) 1 722582
THAMADA CINEMA Thamada is a national treasure. With its beautiful design and architecture, it’s worth visiting just to experience its pure 1950 retro feel. Screens mostly Burmese films, especially comedies. ? 5 Alanpaya Road, Dagon Township t +95 (0) 1 246962, +95 (0) 1 246963, +95 (0) 1 252 118
SHAE SAUNG CINEMA An 800-seat cinema operated by the Mingalar group, this is another architectural landmark of Yangon. Early 1970s chic. Exhibits domestic Myanmar films, Hollywood & Bollywood films, as well as Chinese films. ? 5 Alanpaya Road, Dagon Township t +95 (0) 1 246962, +95 (0) 1 246963, +95 (0) 1 252 118

Mad Max
Fury Road (2015) Director George Miller Cast Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult & IOTA Duration 120 mins A great film, so fast-paced it makes every other film out there look slow and old-fashioned. George Miller (the Director) returns with a bang and takes the helm of this crazy two hour bonkers extravaganza named Mad Max: Fury Road. First of all, the stunts and action sequences are SPECTACULAR. Tom Hardy breaths life into Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron is excellent and emotionally perfect as Furiosa. The story opens, with Immortan Joe who has young ladies as his wives, but he'll goes down when they escape the sadist's hands. Max, who has a violent past with Joe's cronies, decides to help Imperior Furiosa take the girls somewhere safe. Furiosa can't trust Max, and neither can he. So it all comes down to Joe's cronies fighting against them reaching to their destination. The movie is a bananas car chase for the runtime, as Max and Furiosa work together to fight against the evils. And then, there is Nux, a bonkers "really skin coloured" guy, who works with Joe, played well by Nicholas Hoult. The 3D really pays off, and is worth the extra ticket. The movie puts all other action movies of shame, the effects really pop out. Well, this is a definite masterpiece. One of the best movies of the year, one of the best action movies ever made and the role of Theron's life. Miller is truly a mastermind as stated clearly in the trailer. This exceeded my expectations, and will exceed yours as well. The dark style, dark comedy and the over the top characters make a return in this reboot. Must watch, and worth the extra IMAX 3D ticket.
