SEIKGYI/ KANAUNGTO OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN YANGON BY DOMINIC HORNER Seikgyi/Kanaungto is one of the least visited townships in Yangon and a cursory glance at a map will tell you why. There are no bridges joining it to downtown Yangon and the only road linking it to the rest of the city runs from Hlaingtharya Township through to Twantay - well-connected it isn’t. Second of all, there really is nothing to do there. Of course there are a pagodas and monasteries but there are pagodas and monasteries everywhere in Myanmar. You really don’t need to go to Kanaungto to scratch that itch. But these are the very reasons why you should visit Seikgyi/Kanaungto Township. Yes, getting there isn’t straightforward, but that’s part of the fun. In theory there’s nothing to stop you getting there by cab but in the process you’re missing out on one of the joys of the Seikgyi experience, namely, the boat ride across the river to the island.

 HOW TO GET THERE The crossing from downtown Yangon takes around 25-30 minutes and is lots of fun in and of itself. On the way over you’ll see traditional Than Ban fishing boats, huge industrial ships being restored by teams of workers, and you’ll get an unrivalled peek at riverside life for the locals. It’s all very authentic charming stuff. To take the boat to Seikgyi you’ve got two options: First of all you can take the scheduled ferry which leaves from Maw Tin harbour/ Wardan Jetty at 8am and 9am and returns at 4.30pm and 6.30pm. The ferry costs K4000 for a return ticket and there’s a teashop upstairs selling hot drinks and snacks. If those times don’t suit you or you miss the ferry, never fear, there’s another way. If you just turn up at the harbour you should have no problem finding a fisherman who’ll take you across to the island. Just get to the quayside and keep asking for Seikgyi and pointing towards the water – we guarantee someone will volunteer to take you across eventually. There’s no fixed price if you take on a personal ferryman, we’ve been quoted as high as k8000 and as low as k2000, it depends on how many people are involved, if you have a bicycle, and of course, how robust your haggling skills are.

 WHAT TO DO Now that you’ve found your way across the river we come to the second reason to visit Seikgyi/ Kanaungto: There’s nothing there – no Citymarts, no ATMss, no cozy cafes. The township’s not set up for tourists in any way whatsoever at all. For those who find Dala a bit too touristy and metropolitan, (words not usually associated with Dala) this is the place for you. Much like Dala, Seikgyi/ Kanaungto offers you the chance to dive into rural Myanmar without ever really leaving Yangon. The contrast between Kanaungto and the city of Yangon could hardly be starker, yet they’re separated by only a couple of hundred meters of water. What you have is village life, rice paddies and the odd monastery. Walking is an option but we reckon the best way of exploring Seikgyi/Kanaungto is by bicycle. With that in mind, we’ve planned a fun route which is easy to follow and takes in the very best of the township. Keep in mind that if you take the scheduled ferry they’ll drop you off pretty much in the center of town and from there you’ll need to backtrack a bit to get to the starting point.

 THE START From the harbour take the first turn on the left which will take you onto the southern side of the island. From here it’s a very peaceful and scenic straight line all the way to the other side of the island. Just keep straight until you reach a large lily pond, follow the road to the left and you’ll find yourself at the westernmost point of the island after passing through a small village shrouded by trees.  THE QUAY AND PENINSULAR Keep your eyes peeled for a small stone quay located on your right side just before you exit the forest. No one’s ever there and it makes for an excellent picnic and Myanmar beer spot. After you’ve chillaxed for a while, follow the road until you reach the peninsular where you’ll be treated to some nice sweeping views of the river. After you’ve soaked it all up, it’ll be time to retrace your steps a bit to start the next leg of your journey.  TO THE BRIDGE Go back to the lily pond and take a left turn. Go through the first village until you reach a fork in the road where it seems like you should follow the road to the right. Don’t. Take the left. From here it’s just a case of working your way through picturesque little villages and lily ponds till you get to the bridge. You now have the option of either following the main road back to the harbour or crossing the bridge into Kanaungto.  THE KANAUNGTO LOOP Now that you’ve crossed the bridge (see if you can spot Shwedagon as you pass over) you’re into Kanaungto, and from this point onwards there’s not a lot more than rice paddies, huts and ducks. It’s very pretty, so if you’re thirsty for more we’ve planned out an additional circuit that will take you around the township and back to Seikgyi. In fact, there’s only one circuit available to you, all the other little roads splintering off to the side will, we assure you, eventually lead to a dead end. Follow the road from the bridge until you reach the end and are facing the main road. Turn right and head north for about two miles and take the path on the right (see map). If you get to the toll booth you’ve gone too far. If you don’t deviate from that path it’ll take you the whole way round and back to the bridge. It gets a bit more built up and civilizationy along the riverside so if you start feeling peckish there are some restaurants and teashops you can stop off in to refuel. From the foot of the bridge and back allow for around 3-4 hours.

AUTHENTIC SOUTH INDIAN CUISINE AT MANGALAM BY JORDAN AUNGYE PAING WHAT IT IS - Amongst the hustle and bustle in the heart of downtown Yangon, Mangalam sits unpretentiously on the corner of Bogalay Zay Street and Merchant Road. Mangalam, which means Mingalarbar in Tamil. This four-month-old South Indian eatery has long been a regular luncheonette among the neighboring locals and expats working nearby. They serve healthy, fresh South Indian cuisines at reasonable price and a good variety of choices, ranging from breakfast Puri to heavy lunch rice sets. ATMOSPHERE – Mangalam is a tiny hub that hides behind a group of street vendors. The pink walls adorned with Indian artworks and the faint traditional background music lends a Bollywood vibe. The sight of two native Indian chefs bobbling their heads in unison as they bring over my dish is enough to work up my appetite. RECOMMENDATIONS - To start off, we picked Hot Idlis (2500Ks) to silence the growling stomach. The Idlis are lightly battered and steamed to just the right softness. Almost a perfect appetizer for a bread lover like me. Robin, the friendly manager of the place, recommended that we try their signature Uttapam (thick pancake) with tomato stuffing (2000Ks). They both came with three healthy doses of mixed Vegetable Samber, Coconut Chutney and Red Chili Chutney. The best part of the meal is the moment I poke my thumb into the crispy fried sphere Puri (gravy and puffed whole wheat bread), scooping up with Aloo, enlivened with the usual spices (2000Ks). I ordered Hama Mangalam Vege Set (4000Ks) for the mains, to counter the excessive starters. It's quite frankly your choice when it comes to picking the sets because all of them (eggplant, chicken, mutton) are favorable among its customers. My vege set arrived in style: an elegant bronze moon-shaped tray was topped with three wonderfully arranged vegetable dishes accompanied by Dal&Samber. We find ourselves dunking into the peas dish, using the chewy chapatti to sop up every last bit. Don't forget to cool off a bit with a mini cup of sweet Lassi (1500Ks) to complete with a flawless ending. FINAL THOUGHTS - Mangalam offers authenticity at its best with friendly service, affrdable prices and a vegetarian friendly menu. Pink Building Across from Ga Mone Pwint Shopping Center, Coner of Merchant Road & Bogalayzay Street, Botahtaung Township, Yangon.
