Chilling by the Pool Brazilian BBQ – The Emporium @ Chatrium Hotel BY TWINKLE WHAT IT IS The Emporium is one of Yangon’s favourite restaurants that serves continental, Asian and Thai food. Their themed BBQ buffets are especially popular with locals and foreigners alike. Brazilian BBQ is for Fridays and weekends, making it perfect for a classy weekend chilling. ATMOSPHERE The restaurant is quite big but the ambience is warm and cozy, with a solo guitarist playing live Brazilian music. For better privacy, you can request a table set for you by the pool. Wait staff are very friendly and efficient but refilling of empty servers is a bit slow so you might have to wait around a bit when a tray is empty. RECOMMENDATIONS The BBQ buffet is well spread out and includes a great variety of meat, including tender Brazilian beef to go with the theme, as well as fresh tasty seafood. As the name suggests, there are about seven or eight Brazilian dishes including the signature Red Bean Soup, Feijoada, and Black Bean Stew. In case you are not a big fan of saffron rice, different varieties of bread and cheese are available, along with a salad bar that includes four ready-made salads one of which is a tuna salad that is very popular. The display of mouthwatering cakes and pudding are all as delectable as they look. My favourite was the sesame ice-cream. FINAL THOUGHTS The buffet includes ‘a complimentary glass of beer, wine or caipirinha’. At US$30 per person, it is a good deal for any BBQ lover. An a la carte menu is also available all day. Credit: Omai Vietnamese Restaurant

Traditional Flavours & Textures Omai Vietnamese Restaurant BY CLIFF LONSDALE WHAT IT IS Htoo and Thwe, the owners of Omai Vietnamese restaurant, originally met in New York, before deciding to put their years of working in top restaurants to good use by returning to Myanmar and establishing a restaurant of their own. It opened less than a month ago. ATMOSPHERE The frontage is small and tidy, which is deceptive, as the restaurant is large and spacious. It is decorated simply and stylishly with a modern vibe and a tidy bar. RECOMMENDATIONS A decent sized menu, which is not overbearing, is written in English and separated into appetisers, salads and soups/noodles - the staples of Vietnamese food – with a couple of Thai dishes thrown in for good measure. It would have been nice to see the Vietnamese names of the food included on the menu. The food is generously served and well presented, taking into account the textures, colours and flavours of traditional Vietnamese food. The ‘Grilled 3 Spices Beef’ wrapped around lemongrass sticks was wonderfully moist and full-flavoured. The Grilled Spring Roll Prawns were delightfully fresh and with just a hint of mint, the peanut sauce the perfect accompaniment. The Pho (rice noodle soup) was simple yet satisfying and the Omai Chicken Noodle Salad just the right side of spicy. The best dish of our selection had to be the Omai Special Salad - with crispy fried spring rolls, BBQ pork, grilled shrimp and rice noodles - a perfect combination of flavours and textures. FINAL THOUGHTS Though coming in at just less than 20,000 Ks with a beer included this was way too much fod for two! really worth it and there is plenty of incentive to come back and try some more dishes next time. 381 Wai Za Yan Tar Road, Thingyan Gyune Township.
