street scenes
A Pansodan Old Book Seller BY SAN LIN TUN Sweat streams down his cheeks under the blaring sun. U Hla Win, one of many street vendors of Pansodan Street, lays out his bundle of old books, post cards, magazines, calendars and newspapers. He hopes today is a day where he can make some money selling his old items from his sidewalk shop. His shop opens around 1 p.m, what seems like official time for all street vendors to open. "Good afternoon, U Hla Win!" He turns his head to my loud greeting in Burmese. U Hla Win is sixty years old but looks much younger. He is wearing his usual shabby hat, clothing and longyi with his distinct stubby moustache and beard. He does not care much about his appearance, opting for a low profile. "How's today?", my usual question. "No book is sold yet,” U Hla sighs. Luckily for U Hla, one book attracts my attention. Its title is Love written by Rosemary Haughton. The cover is old enough to fit my collection. I ask him the price, then, he replies, "It's 500 Kyat." The deal between us is set. But I didn’t come here only to buy books but to talk with a man that I see almost every day. After I asked ‘where are you from?’ his story came out naturally. "I started [selling books] when I was in my early 20s, when I got married. I've never done any other jobs apart from it. I have a family, I have got two daughters. One of them is a graduate from Distance University...." It is difficult to say why so many book vendors, like U Hla, opened shop on Pansodan. Another reason could be the famous writers that walk down Pansodan on their way to the BTS building, Lawkanat Art Gallery and other Burmese cultural venues. He has been doing this job since 1975. In those days he made much more money selling books. He could earn Ks 40 or Ks 50 a day, a lot in those days. It was still a long way from being well off, but enough to support a family. The interest in new reading material has dropped off since then. Nowadays, he needs to earn Ks 4000 to Ks 6000 a day to cover his daily expenses. Anyone can meet U Hla in front of the Post and Telecommunication office on Pansodan Street. Though life is tough on him to some degree, he still has stamina and resilience to run his shop. He still loves what he does.

buying Organic in Yangon guide
A Growing Trend:
Guide To Buying Organic in Yangon Organic is a term referring to food grown without the use of chemicals or other techniques harmful to humans or the land it was farmed upon. Pesticides are used excessively by many Myanmar farmers with little awareness of the effects on consumers and themselves. Concern of the unregulated chemical-use has inspired several expats and Myanmar entrepreneurs to provide healthier options to Yangon grocery stores and households. While most of the demand for organic food comes from the expat community, advocates are confident that more locals will ‘go organic’ once they taste the natural flavour of the slightly more expensive product. Here is a list of some services in Yangon where you can buy fruit & vegetables grown safely, sustainably and locally in Myanmar. Go to MYANMORE.com for more info on the growing organic movement. PROVIDERS THAT ALSO DELIVER
Fresco
More Details: info@frescomyanmar. com // Place an Order: purchasing@ frescomyanmar.com // Mobile: 09250161224
Fresco was one of the first, and remains one of largest, food services in the country. The goal is to provide Myanmar with organic fruit and vegetables from local farmers, ensuring food safety while reducing carbon emissions. Fresco contracts independent farmers from all over the country, with the goal of reaching 200 farmers in a few months. By using their own farms as models, they provide training and the seed stock to farmers to help them produce a quality yield. Fresco doesn’t have a storefront, but you can taste their fruit & vegetables in dozens of hotels, restaurants and supermarkets (Citymart being the main one) in almost every Myanmar city. They also have a home delivery service, for 23,00 Kyat, for a veggie box that can be customized if given prior notice.
Mya Chemical Free (MCF)
Place an Order: myachemicalfree.com // 09 444 034 301
MCF delivers produce free of pesticides and other chemicals to the doorstep of their customers. After trying tomatoes with a plastic-like taste, a small group of Burmese friends turned their gardens into chemical free farms. Now they operate three, and contract independent farmers as well. There is no membership fee for household deliveries, just the cost of the product and the delivery. You can also try their produce at Sharky’s, District Coffee, Acadia and the restaurant at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel. Alternatively, you can meet the MCF team at the Saturday market at La Carovana. STORES TO BUY IT FROM
Go Green
North side of Kandawgyi Park across the street from the Japanese Embassy, Bahan Township // Mon-Sat 9am-5pm
What began as an initiative to educate farmers on ChemicalFree practices is now a popular organic grocery store that caters to families and restaurants of Yangon. May Myat Thwe has used her background in engineering and business to make Go Green an expanding enterprise in the span of a year. Expats are often thrilled to see a packet of organic lettuce go for 1000 Ks, or fresh bok choy for 400 K. But May Myat is quick to point out that these prices are still too high for many in Myanmar unfamiliar with the benefits of organic. When locals come in to buy bananas or papayas, grown at a farm only 1.5 hours away, she likes to give out samples of produce that they may have not tried before. Her efforts have made their 5 types of spinach a big hit. Besides the store, Go Green provides the produce for Sprouts, Yangon Bakehouse and Craft.
Plan Bee This NGO works with bee-keepers in Shan State to produce and distribute high-quality organic honey. The product will soon be used for cosmetic and candle manufacturing but anyone can buy a beautiful jar of Plan Bee honey at the Saturday market at La Carovana. Organic Farmers Market
North side of Kandawgyi Park across the street from the Japanese Embassy, Bahan Township
This small mobile market is a favorite for runners of Kandawgyi Park and anyone else who is out and about by 7am on Saturdays. Burmese requests for ‘iceberg’ or ‘romaine’ are common for nearby residents who live far from Myanmar Plaza- another carrier of their fruit & vegetables. One of the usual sellers packages homemade pennywort powder supplements that are also organic. WHERE YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
Greenway Yin Yin Phyu and Thein Soe Min founded this social enterprise after graduating from the Yezin Agricultural University. Their mission is to share their extensive knowledge on sustainable farming and engineering techniques. The organization holds several workshops in Yangon as well as Shan State. They’re always ready to assist businesses or individuals with agricultural projects. Contact them by email if you are interested in volunteering or simply learning more about sustainable agriculture in Myanmar.

Jeff’s Kitchen:
A Thai-Western BY ROBERT BERG
WHAT IT IS Jeff’s Kitchen is a pleasant escape from the busy thrust of life in New Yangon. The restaurant is the brainchild of local Jeffrey Khine Lin, who has sought out his training in several different cuisines. Jeffrey has conceived the menu with input from two Thai chefs. Several menus are being explored with an emphasis on Thai and Western inspired dishes. Expect a grand opening in mid-March. ATMOSPHERE Jeff’s Kitchen is situated in a beautiful two-storey building, with a lovely outdoor deck on the second floor, as well as a rooftop deck able to accommodate large parties. RECOMMENDATIONS All the cocktail and beer offerings were reasonably priced. The Oyster Kilpatrick (7500 KS) was our starter – four baked oysters nestled in their shell, topped with almost-crisped bacon and seasoned with Worcestershire sauce. A pleasant enough dish for shellfish deprived Yangon, but nowhere near the flavours yet to come. Catfish Floss with Mango Salad (6900 Ks) is always my personal litmus test for a Thai kitchen, and it did not disappoint – impeccably crisp fried and light, served with spicy sour mango salad that let one enjoy the beautiful sensation of a delightful crunch offset by the sour and spice. The desserts (4200 Ks) were enjoyable and beautifully presented. The Sticky Rice with Fresh Mango was served with a hot shot of coconut milk – well composed and my favorite of the trio. We watched with delight as flambé desserts were prepared tableside nearby. FINAL THOUGHTS The dish sizes here are very generous and great for sharing. This is a winning space for this first-time restaurateur and a welcome addition to Yangon food scene. Jeff’s Kitchen seems to be setting the mark very high indeed. Spicy House’s Mala Fragrant Pot: It’s Worth The Wait! BY TWINKLE WHAT IT IS The Mala Fragrant Pot has been a popular with Southeast Asian foodies for some time now. Based on an old Sichuan recipe, a group of Singaporeans recreated the Mala Fragrant Pot, a mix of different of vegetables, meat and seafood, served both dry and with soup. Now it is available here in Yangon and it seems that people are loving it! There is a plentiful selection of veggies and meat that one can choose from. The staff then weigh the selection and charge accordingly – 600Ks per 100 grams for most veggies, and 1200 Ks per 100 grams for meat and some mushrooms and other select items. You then choose whether you want your selection cooked dry or with soup, and also the level of spiciness. ATMOSPHERE It's cafeteria sized, situated in Hledan Center basement floor. White and shiny tables assure you of the cleanliness. The place is small and busy. Being in a shopping mall, the restaurant is more of a lively experience. One can enjoy watching the hustle bustle that is going on inside and outside the restaurant while sipping a bottomless glass of iced lemon tea. The Spicy House works hard to keep up but there is often a backlog, so be prepared to wait in line for a while- of course it's worth the wait. RECOMMENDATIONS There is not a lot of choice on the menu. Mala Fragrant Pot is served plus a couple other Chinese dishes. I would not recommend the Chinese side dishes, like Kung Pao Chicken, as they are the standard fare. The Mala Pot is truly great. By far the best I have ever experienced in Myanmar and a must try! It is a mixed dish that seems to taste better with the more people at your table! If you think having to queue to get the ingredients is no fun, they do have ‘sets’ for one or two people that start at 5500 Ks. FINAL THOUGHTS It's a nice busy place to hang out with friends and enjoy one great dish with distinct Asian spiciness. The ‘all you can drink’ iced lemon tea (1000 Ks and) complements the spicy food. It may seem pricy but my Singaporean friend said the cost compares well. The best thing is you can control the price with the amount of food you choose. MYANMAR CRAFTS EXHIBITIONANDFAIR 26TH FEB 2016 PHOTOS BY PT@IMAGES
SunBoxx
Beach Party Weekend Promoted by Dog & Bone Parties @ Eskala Resort, Ngwe Saung March 18th – 20th D&B parties is organising SunBoxx on March 18th. MYANMORE interviewed the dynamic group to learn more about what they do. Get tickets to SunBoxx on bookme.com. mm or email dbparties.myanmar@gmail.com. So how did Dog & Bone Parties come about? Myanmar continues to open up with significant foreign influences flooding into the country, expats are arriving in droves and tourist numbers increase every year, yet Myanmar’s dance music scene hasn’t kept up with the trend. D&B was born simply as an endeavour by two good friends, each with almost four years in Yangon, to bridge the gap between what the growing number of dance music fans want to hear and what’s currently available in town. We also like beach parties. Who doesn’t? What is the vision behind D&B Parties? D&B’s lofty aim is to pioneer in the electronic music scene in Myanmar, bringing global standard dance music events with international DJ’s to untapped locations across the country, with our niche being the conceptualisation, programming and delivery of exclusive experiences for partygoers around the region. Or more simply put, we want to organise the kind of parties we love to go to. And then go to them and have an awesome time. To date, what events has D&B Parties organised in Myanmar? In November last year we successfully soft launched what we reckon was Myanmar’s first ever international electronic dance music beach party. We hosted a 3-day event at Eskala Resort in Ngwe Saung, and secured DJ’s from UK, Slovenia, Singapore, Malaysia, Norway and Myanmar. This kind of international house music event was a new concept to Myanmar and was extremely well received by expats and locals alike. Our official launch party, SunBoxx, promises to be even bigger and better. What will the SunBoxx Beach Party in March entail? Quite simply, it is a weekend away filled with pool parties, free-flow sangria and pina coladas, free massages, fire dancers, sunset sessions, and global DJs spinning the latest in international electronic dance music on the beach until 6am. Imagine standing on pristine white sand, a great
drink in hand, watching a perfect sunset out over the Andaman sea. Now imagine loads of people around you and an awesome DJ kicking out epic music on a top class sound system. And instead of standing there, you’re dancing. That’s pretty much what you’re in for. Why Eskala Resort? The location is perfect, the pool is awesome, the beach is amazing, the management are on the ball, the staff are tremendous and they’re letting us take over the place for the entire weekend. What more could you want from a venue? What sort of music will there be? One of our core values is to consistently bring the latest in international electronic dance music, specifically: house, deep house, tech house and funky house, played by international DJs from all corners of the world. At our last event we were lucky enough to have Sy (who’s strapping back in for SunBoxx) & Zee, who flew in from the UK. These brothers from Glasgow delivered a stunning 3-hour back-2-back set on both nights; Zee was mixing live whilst Sy was cutting between Chicago House and Detroit Techno… this had the dance floor packed until 6am. If none of that made much sense to you, just take our word for it, the music will be awesome. What else are you brining to the party apart from the music? We’re very lucky this time around to have four great F&B sponsors. Well, mainly “B” actually. Tuborg are providing the kegs, Monte Vino’s bringing the wine, Designer Water are chucking in the softies and we’ve managed to convince Absolut to sling us some vodka. All-in-all, it’s going to be a very good weekend. Any idea where the next D&B event will take place? Lots of ideas, with imagination being the limiting factor! The wheels are already in motion for the country’s first ever jungle party. Stay up to date on our facebook page “Dog & Bone Parties” for more info and let us know if you have any bright/crazy ideas, we’re very open to suggestions! What is the cost of the SunBoxx Beach Party and where can tickets be bought? Tickets to join in the whole weekend party are only $40. There’s still some room at the inn (Eskala) for those wishing to stay at the venue, with rooms starting as low as $100 per night. We are providing coach transport with free-flow refreshments on the way down for only $30 return. We’re dragging things in to the 21st century with payment options as well to make everything as easy as possible, please see our page for more details: https://web.facebook.com/dognboneparties
