LOST TEASHOP Many of the traditional tea shops are now closing down in downtown Yangon, and there are no new licenses being issued by Yangon Council. It is a quintessential part of the cultural life of Yangon (Burmese, Chinese and Indian) that will soon be lost. One such tea shop closed only last month. The owner Daw Kyi Na is 93 but now too ill to continue running the shop. Her sons and daughters are abroad and have decided to sell. The shop has been here for over 60 years. It never had a formal name but everyone knew where it was and it had a very good local following. It was open every day from 7.00am to 8.00pm. The most popular dish was chicken leg for 2200 Ks. The shop is quite long at 190 feet. The owner’s niece Daw Khin Mar Wai (pictured) has been running the shop in recent times. She is Buddhist and her mother Chinese. In the mornings the shop sold tea, and the afternoons different curries and rice. Please pop in and say hello if you are passing by and someone is home. CHINESE TEMPLES Kheng Hock Keong Temple @ Latha Township Located on the corner of Sintodan St and Strand Rd in Latha Township it is Yangon's largest and oldest Chinese folk religion's temple dedicated to the goddess Mazu. It was originally built as a wooden temple in 1861 and completed in 1863. A new brick building was completed in 1903, costing over 153,000 rupees. Kheng Hock Keong is maintained by a Hokkien Chinese clan association. The temple attracts mostly Hokkien and Hakka worshipers, while the other temple in Latha Township, called the Guanyin Gumiao Temple, attracts Cantonese worshipers.

Guanyin Gumiao Temple @ Latha Township Also known as the Guangdong Guanyin Temple it is one of two major Chinese temples located within Latha Township in Yangon's Chinatown. It was founded by the Cantonese community of Yangon in 1823, but was destroyed by a fire in December 1855, and subsequently rebuilt in 1864, with two additional brick buildings to the side built in 1872. The temple is located on Maha Bandula Road and is dedicated to Guanyin.

Fushan Si Temple @ Bahan Township Also spelt Fu Shan Si or Fu Sun Si, is located on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township. It is a Mahayana Buddhist temple founded in January 1875 by overseas Chinese descended from Hoklo people from Anxi County, Fujian. The temple is managed by Kheng Hock Keong in downtown Yangon. Fushansi is dedicated to a Chinese Buddhist monk named ChĂł-su-kong (also known as Qingshui Zushi) and was restored in 2008. Fushansi attracts many devotees especially during Chinese New Year and Qingsui Zu Shi's birthday. Credit to Wikipedia

Get Loud and Chill

Bar Code Bar and Karaoke Lounge BY WUT YEE AUNG

WHAT IS IT Barcode is a combination of Bar & KTV Lounge, located on the third floor of Novotel Hotel on Pyay Road. If you are looking for a good place to have a fun night out with friends or colleagues after work, or in the weekends or hosting parties, this is it! ATMOSPHERE The decoration with modern paintings on the wall, just before the entrance, makes up the fanciness [and maybe fantasy] of the place. Now, I may not know much about art, but hey, they look great on the wall. A variety of KTV room sizes are available, where the smallest room can serve 10-15 people and the largest around 25. RECOMMENDATIONS The menu is well organised. The is a good variety of food and drinks to choose from, with good prices starting at 2000 Ks. We ordered a few dishes and drinks from Barcode Special and All-Time Favourite lists to sample; it saves you from having to think too much about what to order. We had the room for 2 hours. The regular price is 50,000 Ks per hour, but if you come in the afternoon there is a 50% discount. Regarding the karaoke experience, the choice of Myanmar songs for locals is extensive, from folk to punk genre, though there are not many to choose from for English-speaking guests, or those who want to sing English songs. The existing lists of English songs are not updated to today’s popularity, however it is perfect if you are a huge fan of oldies, grew up in the 90s, or love flipping basic pop, rock. FINAL THOUGHTS It would be great if Bar Code made better use of modern technology and Internet. They could just connect the devices to Wi-Fi and customers could directly search for their preferred songs or artists. There are many karaoke software applications out there, both paid and unpaid. This would make Bar Code stand out from the rest in the industry. Overall, I was not disappointed. Bar Code is a fantastic hang out place for relaxing with friends and family with good privacy. I say, bring some friends over and get loud and chill. Who cares if you can’t sing! Address: Bar Code, Bar & Karaoke Lounge, Hotel Novotel Yangon Max, Pyay Road, Kamaryut Township, Yangon. No Place For Vegetarians Astons Steakhouse BY CLIFF LONSDALE

WHAT IT IS There is no escaping the fact that Astons is a steak restaurant. From the retro style brick wallpaper loaded with action photographs of cowboys, to the Stetsons and horns displayed behind the bar – there is a certain machismo about the place. ATMOSPHERE Bare tables, harsh lines, bright lights, this is a restaurant to come to if you are serious about eating meat, and perhaps not the place to go if you are looking for a cosy romantic meal for two. If you are still unsure about the theme of the restaurant, then the colourful graphic of a cow on page one of the menu, highlighting where the different cuts of beef come from, is a pretty good demonstration of their intentions. If it is steak you are looking for then you have definitely come to the right place, for this is no restaurant for vegetarians. RECOMMENDATIONS The usual suspects are available: sirloin, T-bone, tenderloin, there is even Wagyu ribeye on offer at a very inviting price of 42,500 Ks. All their beef is imported from Australia, and although normally I would prefer to eat something with fewer air-miles, if the tenderloin at 22,000 Ks is anything to go by, everything else should be of a high standard, and seems to have travelled well. The meat was expertly cooked, just the right side of medium so that those lovely juices flooded out when cut into. The outside was lightly and very neatly charred, which provided a tasty hint of charcoal that surrounded a mouthwateringly tender piece of meat. The lamb chops from New Zealand were rich and sweet, though if I’m being picky, just ever so slightly overcooked for my liking, although still moist and flavourful. FINAL THOUGHTS Newly opened and located on the third floor of the spaceship like Myanmar plaza, Astons looks it is going to be (and perhaps already is) a popular place to go with friends to eat good quality meat at extremely affordable prices. Astons Specialities Yangon Steakhouse Address: 302B, HAGL Myanmar Plaza, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Tsp, Yangon Phone: 09976498693, 09421033838 | Opening Hours: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
