Belmond Governor's Residence
UNIQUE DINING EXPERIENCES These are special times to be in Yangon, as the city is going through something of a culinary transformation. When it comes to dining, Yangon is no longer the poor cousin to other large cities, and in fact it is arguably becoming the fastest growing city in Asia. With many venues opening up in the last year, diners can now enjoy a plethora of dining options where the atmosphere, service, authenticity, and X-factor are just as important (and just as good) as the food. In no particular order, here are some unique dining experiences in Yangon:
GARDEN LAKE LE PLANTEUR Le Planteur has been around since 1998. Expect authentic French cuisine in a unique setting. There is also a Bistro area and a wine bar where you can sip wine by the sample, glass, or bottle through a self-service machine or served by a waiter. Enjoy their indoor lounge, outdoor garden area, or a scenic veranda for taking high tea. ? 80, University Road, Bahan Township 01514230, 0132124 P 12 pm — 2 pm, 6 am — 11 pm
HISTORICAL BUILDING BELMOND GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE Once a dilapidated building that had been home to the ruler of Myanmar’s southern states, Belmond Governor’s Residence has undergone extensive refurbishment. It is now a first class luxury resort hotel surrounded by extensive gardens and ancient trees. A combination of “old Burma tradition” and modern luxury, it’s like stepping into an oasis of a bygone era. Their nightly Myanmar Curry is popular. Enjoy it with local tea and cheroot, a truly decadent local experience. ? 35, Taw Win Road, Dagon Township 01229860, 01228260 P Daily
ROOFTOP DINING LE CELLIER WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT @ NOVOTEL A uniquely stunning wine bar and restaurant featuring simple authentic French cuisine, breath-taking terrace views of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a walk-in wine cellar and a gallery wall curated in collaboration with local artists. They have an extensive wine list with over 100 wines available. ? Rooftop, 14h Floor of Novotel Yangon Max Hotel, 459, Pyay Road, Kamayut Township 012305858 P 12 pm — 2:30 pm, 6 pm — 10:30pm
MEDITERRANEAN TAPAS BAR THE LAB WINE & TAPAS BAR Yangon’s first dedicated tapas and wine bar, The Lab serves not just Spanish tapas alone, but also features Northern African food, such as Mechouia Salad with Tuna and Middle Eastern fare, such as Houmous and Baba Ghanoush that comes in portions that are meant for sharing. They’ve recently added fine cheeses and cold cuts to their menu. Add some Middle Eastern and African beats and a drop of decent wine, and you have a complete Mediterranean experience in Yangon. ? 70/A, Shwegondaing Road, Bahan Township 09250018200, 09250537979 P 5:30 pm — 11 pm (Daily)
UPSCALE TEAHOUSE RANGOON TEA HOUSE (RTH) Want to experience the local experience, but want to do it in comfort? Then head to Rangoon Tea House. In essence, RTH is a modern take on the local tea shop, but with expat prices. Nestled on Pansodan’s hustle and bustle, it serves 12 blends of tea to suit anyone’s palate. Popular favourites such as mohinga and samosas are the talk of the town. ? 77, Pansodan Street, (Lower Middle Block), First Floor, Kyauktada Township 095178329 P 8 am — 10 pm
THE GERMAN CONNECTION MAHLZEIT Mahlzeit is the first restaurant concentrating on German cuisine. While providing popular dishes to crowds familiar with the region, the menu also includes traditional offerings to go with an assortment of libations to cleanse the palette. Mahlzeit hosts occasional events such as the European Food Festival. ? 84, Pann Hlaing Street, Sanchaung Township 09 784 151250 reservation@mahlzeit-myanmar.com
LOCAL STREET EATS 19TH STREET Many would agree that 19th street is the go-to place for a real authentic feeling of street food that includes the activity of mobile food-hawkers selling giant fried grasshoppers or tea leaf salads; the lottery sellers or the same beggars making their rounds every hour milling about. Diners are surrounded by all kinds of BBQ seafood and various local fare. Tourists come because they’re curious, locals for the whisky, and the expats are
guide there for the cheap food and to network. The sight, the smell, and the atmosphere brings to mind the phrase, “Keeping it real.” ? 19th Street (Upper Block), Latha Township P 9 am — 12 am or late
MYANMAR EXPERIENCE 999 SHAN NOODLE HOUSE Arguably one of the most famous Shan Noodle house in Yangon. TAING YIN THAR To get an overall experience of the diversity of Myanmar cuisines, head to Taing Yin Thar. Also know as the National Restaurant of Myanmar, this restaurant serves an array of dishes from all over the country. The traditional decor and the outstanding service make this place a very enjoyable venue for authentic and tasty food. They have beer on tap and if you don’t know what to choose from their impressive menu, we personally recommend the black bean pork - it is simply succulent. ? 5A, Corner of Maykha Road and Parami Road, Mayangon Township 019660792, 09420126002, 0973221717 P 10 am — 10 pm

Astons Specialities Yangon Steakhouse BY NUUSHI
Aston Soon would never have imagined in 2005 that his Western brand would cross the shores of East Coast Park Singapore into a bustling retail mall in Yangon ten years later. Nestled within an entire floor of twenty other dining options, Astons stood out – prominent and visible, it had a distinctive vibe from its country-inspired theme; and a brand new menu of offerings that could convince even the diner who abstains from beef and might turn away from its name ‘Steakhouse’, that its chicken chops and fish fillets might surely be as good as its legendary sirloins and tenderloins. Very quickly, we were ushered to our seats and shown the menu. Like any other western cuisine, one chooses a starter (soup or salad), a main course with side options, a dessert and drink. We went straight for the mushroom soup and garlic bread; the soup was creamy with every mouthful melted with soft mushroom bits. Main courses came either as an a la carte item or set meal with two side dishes. Side dishes were in hot and cold options, including tasty rice, mac and cheese, onion rings, a range of salads and coleslaw, and potato-based options like fries, wedges and the recommended baked potato. The meats – chickens came in ways of teriyaki, black-peppered, chargrilled, amongst others; fish in crispy or chargrilled options; and the steaks in ways of cooking as one would prefer. We opted for the chargrilled chicken, which was cooked to perfection; it was soft and juicy on the inside, with enough spice to give it kick. Our sides complemented the dishes. Sets were priced from an affordable 6,800 Ks. As the evening progressed, we had laughs and deeper conversations, as we soaked in an atmosphere of ambient lighting, surrounded by retrostyled brick wall covering, photos of cowboys in lasso action adorning the walls, the Stetsons and horns on display behind the bar – as if for a brief moment we were transported into Wild Wild West to the tune of pop- and country-inspired numbers. There seemed to be an air of machismo about the place. Indeed, our dining experience could be best summed up with its founder’s recipe for success: ‘providing quality and value-for-money food, service that makes you feel like you’re with friends, and an experience that you’ll remember for life.’ 302/B, HAGL Myanmar Plaza, Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Township, Yangon, Myanmar 09 960 949 999 | Opening Hours: 10 am to 9 pm
