Taste of Japan Yhet’s Sushi & Soba By Yamuna Mariados WHAT IT IS Yhet’s Sushi & Soba brings the flavours of Japan to Yangon. It serves authentic Japanese cuisine ranging from sushi and tempura to soba. It also has an excellent selection of sake. All the fish products they use in their delicacies are imported still alive and the restaurant is well-known for having some of the best sashimi in the country. ATMOSPHERE Yhet’s Sushi & Soba is a two storey restaurant that can fit up fifty people. Its setup is traditional Japanese, with private cubicles for diners which are closed off with traditional cloth, providing an cosy and intimate atmosphere. The service staff are fluent in Japanese, and also speak some Burmese and English, for those of us who are unable to master the Japanese language. RECOMMENDATIONS We started off the night with Hiyayakko and Green Soybeans as appetisers, both prepared with a degree of care that permeated throughout all the dishes. This was followed by the Braised Pork Belly which was succulent and had just the right amount of fat. The champion for the night had to be the Sushi Platter and Sushi Rolls – the tuna, salmon and seabass used were full of flavour and unbelievably fresh. The rice (sumeshi) was the just the right consistency and the seasoned vinegar (sushi-su) had real depth. We also tried their Soba which delicious, and nutty to taste. Our night ended on a high note with some homemade Blueberry Ice Cream. The price range is anywhere from US$1 to US$45, the prices are listed in US$ but you can pay in Kyat. FINAL THOUGHTS Yhet’s Sushi & Sobai is a welcome respite away from the congestion of the city. A quiet and intimate space to enjoy excellent food. The mere quality of the ingredients used in creating the dishes makes you want to go back for more. Overall this is definitely a Japanese restaurant that everyone has to dine at least once during their stay in Yangon! Yhet’s Sushi & Soba No.57, 37 Street (Lower Block), Kyauktada township, Yangon Tel : 01-377212 / 09250188878 / 092526228280 Opening Hours: Daily 11am-11pm (Last order 10.30pm)

Union Bar and Grill WHAT IT IS The Union Bar and Grill is a cozy place for your lunch in downtown Yangon. It’s a great place for business talk, private meetings as well as a friendly catch-up. High-quality dishes are served. The menu includes starters, roasts, mains, pudding, and sides, as well as the grill, beverages and juices. The staff are friendly enough that you will feel like you are at home. The majority of the customers here are return patronage ATMOSPHERE For Sunday lunch, the strong point is the catering for those customers with children: a small playground has been created, with lots of toys, a TV showing cartoons, and a drawing teacher who is able to keep the kids amused while parents are having their lunch. Magic shows are held from 2pm to 4 pm on Sunday for those who love a surprise. RECOMMENDATION The menu does not miss the expectation of those who long for the taste of British bistro food; the British chef has designed the entire menu himself. There are three choices: beef, pork and chicken roasts. I chose Roast Loin of Middle and Belly Pork (US$14). All roasts come with roasted potatoes, cauliflower cheese, honey glazed carrots, sautéed greens and homemade gravy. The slightly salty and slow-cooked style of the meat plus the tender vegetables make for a great combination. The quality of the cheese and the freshness of local products add to a superb Sunday roast. Of the main courses available, there are two options for vegetarians. One is the Homemade Eggplant and Mushroom Cannelloni (US$9). The smell as well as the taste reminded me of Italian pizza because of its fine tomato sauce. With the simple look, the roll of eggplant and mushroom paste covered with tomato sauce and cheese, brings an incredibly delicious flavour. FINAL THOUGHTS The Union Bar & Grill place is a great place to chill out and enjoy a hearty Sunday roast. The fresh and wholesome ingredients and the bespoke recipe attracts an appreciative crowd. I can’t find any reason not to come here again, and I am sure the kids were having a great time. You can enjoy the ‘All Day Sunday Roast on Sundays’ from 12pm to 9pm.
