sunday brunch guide

Sunday Brunch in Yangon Brunch, a western concept where party-goers and families unite to eat and drink (often booze) at 1pm after sleeping in. The well-known spots in Yangon can be a bit pricey but worth it if you're looking for a classic brunch menu and your choice of wines and juices. It's unclear how readily available mimosas are.

 THE BRUNCH SOCIETY // 143 Sule Pagoda Road, Sule Plaza //

09 960 359 701 This fusion restaurant will give you the perfect brunch in the morning as it can provide you the a variety of dishes, ranging from Burmese fried rice to English traditional breakfast with tea and Egg Benedicts. The signature dishes are Tom Yum River Prawn Fettuccine, crunchy French toast, and Grilled Sea Bass with Lychee Red Curry.

 SULE SHANGRI-LA SUNDAY BRUNCH // 223 Sule Pagoda Road This is probably one of the best meal you can have in Yangon. A buffet if an exceptional seafood selection that seems to never deplete. Since there are facilities and separate place for children, it is definitely the best for family to relax for Sunday afternoon. You should really makes reservations, it is $36 per person, which includes bottomless sparkling wine and just about every other booze.

 THE SQUARE AT NOVOTEL YANGON MAX // 459 Pyay Road MYANMORE has written in the past about The Square, much of which applies to their Sunday Brunch, which is every Sunday from 12pm-3pm. It is a large buffet that has an impressive selection, free flowing booze and cafeteria-style seating that is conducive for children. It’s $30 a head, half off for children under 12, free for toddlers.

 HUMMINGBIRD // No. 76 Phone Gyi Street Brunch goers usually eat on the first two floors of this three-storey colonial style building. They serve a traditional western brunch menu, no free flow of alcohol, some dishes come with a Latin American twist. Their Eggs Florentine and Eggs Benedict, both around $10, are great brunch classics but you can also get jambalaya and ceviches to change things up. They also have a few sugary treats for those that don’t like eggs, apparently there are some that feel this way.

 LA TAVERNA // 330 Ahlone Rd La Taverna is a perfect place for Mediterranean food lovers. La Taverna offers all sorts of traditional Mediterranean dishes such as Falafel in Pita and Greek Style Stuffed Pepper. Furthermore, there are Mediterranean salads, soups and even deserts. The price range is 3000-6000 Ks for appetizers, 8000-14000 Ks for main dishes and 3000-5000 Ks for desserts.

 GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE // 35 Taw Win St. The price makes this inaccessible to most people, but could be worth it if you want to spend the entire day here. They have a hot season deal where you have full access to their breakfast, a la carte lunch, world-class pool and open bar for $79. From 8:30am-5:30pm. If you just want breakfast food and nothing more it is $27 plus 15% in taxes and service fees- their deals are subject to change.

 PORT AUTONOMY // 22 Kabar Aye Pagoda Road A great place to spend a day milling around with your family and friends. Best known for its eclectic menu, Port Autonomy can offer a wide variety of dishes ranging from Kimchi Fried rice and Shakshuka with a toasted Ciabatta to full English Breakfast with roasted bacons and grilled sausages. Free flow of drinks will include mimosa, margarita, Bloody Mary’s, draught beer, and many more drinks. The price for the whole meal is $30 per head, which is a reasonable price considering the quality of the food and beverage.

 INYA LAKE HOTEL // 37 Kaba Aye Pagoda Road // 95 01 662866 An international buffet at Orchid Restaurant that is known for a large selection of alcohol, mainly wine, with live music often in the background. If you love it here, you should think about getting a membership which gives you a discount on everything Inya Lake Hotel. Otherwise, it’s $35 a person, children from ages 4-12 half off.

A Soulful Kitchen Green Gallery BY CHARLIE TURNER

WHAT IT IS - It can feel as if you stumble into Green Gallery restaurant on the ground floor of a quiet residential building. A trendy interior, light food and affordable prices have made the Thai restaurant a hub for expatriates and Myanmar young professionals. The limited hours and seating should get you to call ahead especially on the weekends. ATMOSPHERE - Distressed wood tables, incandescent light bulbs, and rustic chic decorations give Green Gallery a modern bohemian vibe. The decor probably resonates more with a younger audience but older couples can be found here at any given night. There is light music playing in the background, but not enough to get in the way of conversation. The airy layout of the restaurant prevent this place from ever getting too loud. Aesthetics aside, the owner and staff are very friendly and work to have a comfortable atmosphere. RECOMMENDATIONS - The kitchen focuses on Thai-comfort food with a focus on keeping the dishes fresh and light. The menu is simple, and changes with what is seasonal. They have a number of juices, made in house, (2000 Ks) that rely purely on the natural sweetness for flavour. Their tomato salad, one of the more popular appetizers, combines peanuts, green tomatoes and onions with a light dressing. (2000 Ks). There are the usual choices of meat with your curry, but the shrimp is recommended. Despite their size, each giant shrimp remains flavourful and is used in salads, Tom Yum Soup and of course their famous curries. The Panang Curry with Shrimp (5000 Ks) is a creamy yet invigorating dish that follows the kitchen theme of ‘sticking to the basics’. Yardlong beans, white eggplant and chilis cook with the curry for hours until it is ready to be served with your choice of meat. We were lucky to also get some mango for dessert, Sein Ta Lone (meaning diamond- yes they are that good), served with sticky rice and coconut. A simple desert that's good for those who want a light finish. FINAL THOUGHTS - Green Gallery is a kitchen with soul which serves clean and healthy Thai cooking that appeals to a broad audience. Keep in mind the 9pm closing time. Corner of Mahabandoola Road and 52nd Street, 58 52nd St, Yangon.

Relaxed Cafe & Bar at The Basement BY AMANDA WIN

WHAT IT IS - Digressing from the trend of rooftop bars, The Basement is an up-and-coming space to literally get down with your friends. With a standard Bar & Grill menu, the food is solid, but it’s the atmosphere that sets this place apart. Café by day and bar by night, near bustling Chinatown, it is odd to think this place was a hair salon only a few months ago. ATMOSPHERE - The place is dimly lit with some soft lights along the booths by the wall. Live music performances are available on some of the weekdays. It has two stories, the bar underground and the kitchen above, which is also visible for customers to observe. The place holds exactly 88 customers, waiters are on top of things, and the service is quite fast. RECOMMENDATIONS - Western bar food that's heavy on meat, starch and grilled vegetables. Some of The Basement signature dishes are the Grilled Pork Ribs (8500 Ks), and the Beef Fajita (6000 Ks), which is also available in chicken. Both the Pork and Beef are well-cooked, tender, and easy to chew. For appetizers, the Tofu Chicken Wings (4500 Ks) and the Fried Soft Shell Crab (5000 Ks) are definitely worth trying. One of the main dishes is the Grilled New Zealand Beef Steak (16,000 Ks), which is served with a side of mashed potatoes, vegetables and black pepper sauce. A lot of the dishes come in big portions, so it’s a better choice to share it with friends. Drinks are available ranging from your typical Ice Latte and smoothies, to mojitos (4500 Ks) and their very own signature cocktails (5000 Ks). Normal cocktails cost 500 Ks less than the signature ones. These signature cocktails have their own names like Basement Gentlemen and Night. FINAL THOUGHTS - All the ingredients are fresh, purchased every day at the local markets in Chinatown. The price and experience is preferable with a crowd especially at night. It reminds me of a place that 'How I Met Your Mother' fans would appreciate. 785 Mahabandoola Street (at 13th Street), Lanmadaw Township, Yangon. Phone: 01-229173
