NATIONAL HOLIDAY AND FESTIVAL GUIDE October marks the the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the festive season here in Myanmar. It’s time when musicians dust off their instruments and actors take to the stage, keeping alive traditions that have survived the centuries. Arguably the most important of all Myanmar’s festivals is Full Moon Day of Thadingyut which this year falls on 16 October, meaning you’re just in time to catch the celebrations. Below is our full round up of Myanmar’s National Holidays and major Festivals.
FULL MOON DAY OF THADINGYUT 16 OCTOBER 2016 Held on the full moon day of the Lunar month of Thadingyut, this festival (also known as the Festival of Lights) says goodbye to the Buddhist lent and hopefully also the rainy season. The festival lasts for three days over the full moon period and is celebrated to welcome Buddha’s descent from heaven. During Thadingyut, food stalls and traditional shops are opened around the country and musical plays and free movies are shown. It is one of the most important days of the year for the Buddhist people and is a popular time for local people to visit Pagodas.
FULL MOON OF TAZAUNGMONE 14 NOVEMBER 2016 Held on the full moon day of Tazaungmone, the holiday celebrates the end of Kahtein season, during which monks are offered new robes and alms. Despite the day being acknowledged as a Buddhist festival, it has strong links to Hindu celebrations. Regardless of its origins, it is another holiday that fills the country’s pagodas and one which sees much merit-making taking place. The famous Tazaungdaing (fire balloon) festival is held in Taunggyi at this time.
NATIONAL DAY 24 NOVEMBER 2016 National Day is celebrated to commemorate the beginning of student protests against British rulers, which included a strike in the country’s universities.
CHRISTMAS DAY 25 DECEMBER 2016 Despite being a predominately Buddhist country, Christmas is celebrated as an official National Holiday.
INDEPENDENCE DAY 4 JANUARY 2017 On January 4 1948, Myanmar (then Burma) became entirely independent of its colonial rulers (the British). Shan National Sao Shwe Taik became the new country’s first President and U Nu its first Prime Minister. While there is no lingering resentment towards the British, the Myanmar people are fiercely proud of their independence. Fairs and activities are held across the country to celebrate the date.
UNION DAY 12 FEBRUARY 2017 Union Day celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the Panglong Agreement, between the Burmese government under General Aung San and the people of Shan, Kachin and Chin on 12th February, 1947. The agreement pronounced full independence in internal governance and was seen as key to the country gaining full independence from the British a year later.
PEASANTS DAY 2 MARCH 2017 Peasants Day celebrates Myanmar’s large number of farmers, which make up about 70 percent of the country’s population. The date also commemorates the military coup of 1962. During the holiday, leaders discuss reforms that would benefit the farming industry and families visit parks or local pagodas.
FULL MOON OF TABAUNG 12 MARCH 2017 The Full Moon of Tabaung is a traditional merit-making day for Buddhists in Myanmar. It is celebrated during the last month before the Myanmar New Year. Shwedagon Pagoda hosts an enormous festival to celebrate this holiday. The festival begins with a ceremony making offerings to the 28 Buddhas, followed by a 10-day, non-stop recital of the Buddhist scriptures.
ARMED FORCES’ DAY 27 MARCH 2017 Originally celebrated as Resistance Day, the celebration of Armed Forces’ Day coincides with the anniversary of the army’s resistance against Japanese occupation in 1945. Ceremonies are held on this day celebrating the nation’s army (the Tatmadaw), usually in the capital city Nay Pyi Taw.
THINGYAN WATER FESTIVAL (MYANMAR NEW YEAR) / 12 APRIL — 20 APRIL 2017 It’s that one time of the year where the (usually conservative) Myanmar people allow themselves to go a little wild.
Recognized similarly in neighbouring Buddhist countries, Thingyan (‘Songkran’ in Thailand and ‘Chaul Chnam Thmey’ in Cambodia) was traditionally, and still is in certain quarters, celebrated to cleanse one’s spirit before the coming of the New Year. Today, it is a raucous, but incredibly fun celebration where people of all ages take to the streets to party and pour water all over each other.
LABOUR DAY (MAY DAY) 1 MAY 2017 The almost worldwide holiday celebrating workers’ rights, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated splitting the day into three equal parts: eight-hours work, eight-hours recreation, and eight-hours rest.
FULL MOON OF KASONE 11 MAY 2017 Sometimes informally referred to as Buddha’s Birthday (Wesak). It is on this day that the birth, enlightenment, and death (attainment of Nirvana) of Gautama Buddha is celebrated. It is a holy day for Buddhists and is usually marked by processions through the streets. WASO FULL MOON DAY 9 JULY 2017 Celebrating the Buddha’s first sermon of the Four Noble Truths, the Waso Full Moon Day marks the beginning of Buddhist lent (Vasso), which generally coincides with the height of Myanmar’s rainy season. It is normally a time of heightened religious activity around the country and many of the most abiding monks do not leave the monastery grounds during this time. Commitments from lay Buddhists usually involve abstaining from meat, alcohol, or smoking and it is also a time when Myanmar people are not allowed to move house.
MARTYRS’ DAY 19 JULY 2017 After Thingyan, Martyrs’ Day is probably Myanmar’s most important public holiday. It is observed to commemorate the assassination of the country’s father of independence, General Aung San (the father of National League for Democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi) and eight others by a jealous political rival shortly before the country attained independence from the British in 1947.

Salud – A Latino Restaurant with Japanese Service BY BEN HOPKINS
Renovated and recently reopened, Salud offers an array of Latino dishes in a bohemian and rustic setting. Bric-a-brac objects of art adorn a brush stroke interior of red, gold and green beneath bronze colonial ceiling fans and light shades made from recycled bottles. The ambience leans towards a fun night out. A dangerous collection of rum and tequila is stacked high behind the bar while salsa and dance set the tone. True to word their menu spans the length of Latin America offering recipes from Brazil, Bolivia Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. Affordable deals range from 2 US$ for Chicken Tacos up to 12 US$ for the Saltado Beef Pasta. Salud will not break the bank, so long as you don’t go overboard on the tequila and rum! Maiko Ono, the Japanese owner whose Latino loving sister and mother own a Salsa dance club in Tokyo, arrived in Yangon four years ago, alone and determined to make her dreams come true. The curious combination of a Latino themed restaurant run by a Japanese woman in the heart of Yangon has proven a hit amongst the Japanese and local crowd – now is the time to reach out to Yangon’s ever growing international community. Shortly after witnessing a two-foot high flame leap from the wok the first dish is served up – a spicy minced beef Empanada cooled down with a Cuban Salad of Pomelo and Coleslaw. Loading up the table with tapas style dishes we work our way through a fun range of flavours and textures including Octopus with Olive Sauce, Peru style Fried Garlic Rice with Pork and a curious dish called Kara-age, Japanese style deep fried chicken with Salsa Verde and chili sour source – don’t let anyone tell you fusion is dead. The tortillas and guacamole are homemade as is the melt in your mouth Chocolate Fondant dessert. Amongst the almost limitless choice of cocktails they claim to serve the best Mojito in town - but doesn’t everyone nowadays. Salud is a great venue for a fun night out with friends. The cuisine is satisfying and good value for money while the tequila and rum will have you swaggering to the bar for more. 70C, Shwegontaing Road, Bahan Township, Yangon. Tel: 09 450061748
