JOSEPH PI ACACIA TEA SALON WHAT BRINGS YOU TO YANGON. I was drunk! Laughs I was here two years ago as a consultant to one of the owners who wanted to build a hotel then. I was in Shanghai and after awhile he suggested that I visit the project site. I did and loved it. Yangon two years ago was not the same as now. Afterwards, I shuttled frequently until six months ago, whilst having drinks, he offered me this position. I said, “Why not?” It would be a new opportunity for me. That time I was totally drunk. Laughs. DID YOU REGRET IT Not at all. I said I will commit and be a consultant to Acacia but not as a General Manager. I want to be independent. I want to see the city and do something for the staff. After 25 years in the hotel industry, my next step is not to work for the owners; I want to work for the staff. I started this career as a waiter. I know their dreams; I know what it feels like. I want to upgrade the staff and make their life more meaningful. I was lucky to study abroad and it changed my life. In the Chinese society, your social status means something. I always say to my colleagues, “You can serve for ten years, after that you definitely have to go for a managerial position. Upgrade yourself.” In Europe, a career as a waiter is an accepted profession; in Asian society it’s not. I want to change somebody’s life. WHAT DRIVES YOU

PE PPE R S D i ner

+ MANY MORE! www.myanmore.com/yangon/weekly-guide/

The mentality of the Myanmar people. I should not say this but after spending years in China, sometimes your mind is not that purified; not that simple. The Chinese have a philosophy: In China you have to fight- not to beat others up, but as a self-protection. So fighting becomes our regular way of life. When I came to Myanmar, fighting is not necessary. It’s a huge change for me. I can sleep peacefully. All you have to do here is to sophisticate it. In China if you try to sophisticate it, sometimes you have to fight with even the taxi driver for a taxi. But living in Yangon is simple and happy. I like this simplicity. WHAT DO YOU DO DURING YOUR DOWNTIME I drink! Laughs. What do you expect me to say? There’s not much to do in Yangon. I go to the Strand Hotel and Union Bar a lot. Sometimes I just go to Inya Lake, sit on the bench and enjoy the view. Otherwise I go out with my local colleagues. I enjoy spending time with young people. I think they do inspire us. IF YOU WERE ABLE TO INVITE ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD YOU ASK Audrey Hepburn. When I was studying in Switzerland, she lived there and there were always news about how she is always generous to the NGO organisations. She did a lot for homeless children and devoted a lot for families who could not afford to send their children to school. This was the later years. She was not as beautiful as in the films then but it was her glamour and character for me. I served her once in Geneva and I was touched. She’s always my idol, not just for her beauty and elegance but her generosity and kindness.
