LOCAL PEOPLE, LOCAL PRODUCTS BURMESE BUTTER The ‘Moe Cherry’ brand of butter is rare in Myanmar, in that it is local and freshly made. Brought down by refrigerated truck it is sold here in the Moe Cherry local business run by U Aung Chit and his family of five daughters. The family immigrated from Nepal over a hundred years ago to Mandalay where they eventually set up a diary herd, now comprising two hundred cows and dairy factory in nearby Pyin Oo Lwin. Their shop here in Yangon has been here forty years and passed down through three generations. Apart from the excellent salted and unsalted butter (1000Ks per half-pound) you can also buy pure ghee, margarine, and mixed spices, including butter soaked chilli. A Brilliant Taste Of Mexico - Mañana BY CLIFF LONSDALE

Mañana is proof that quality food does not need to come with a prohibitive price tag, and people are literally queuing at the door to get in, both Myanmar and foreigner alike. This simple little restaurant is not only brightening up the downstairs corridor of Pearl Condo, it is potentially starting a revolution as to how food should be served and priced in Yangon. Nidia Amaya, the owner and chef, rushes in and out of the kitchen all night, she is clearly busy, but loving every minute of it. Her team are young and new to Mexican food, and Nidia flits from table to table filling in the gaps in people’s knowledge, making recommendations, and delivering small samples to try. What can I recommend? Giant quesadillas, a meal in themselves, are a masterpiece of flavour engineering.Tostadas of beef-tongue are literally melt in the mouth, and the Ceviche is a delicate and moist combination of fresh Tilapia cured with pineapple, cilantro, onion and chili. The Mexican Myanmar fusion tostadas is her own invention. If you’ve never tasted Mole then here is the place to do it, and although it isn’t to everyone’s liking, the Enchiladas with Mole Sauce are incredible. The dish filled with such complexity of sour and sweet, spicy and rich, it is so moreish that you start to consider moving your belt down a notch in preparation for seconds. I tried too much food to record all the details here, bright colourful zingy Guacamole, rich luxurious black beans, homemade queso fresco, awesome Margarita’s. Nidia even forces a sliver of sweet fudgy flan down my throat to completely finish me off. It is all just brilliant. There is no secret to their success, fabulous food, fantastic prices, attention to detail and a lively atmosphere. There is something undeniably pleasant about being in a busy restaurant, shoulder to shoulder with people all emitting a positive and satisfied vibe as they devour their food with gusto. So successful have they been in their first three months of operation that they are now planning on relocating to new and bigger premises. Address: Pearl Condo, Block C, Ga- 05, Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Township, Yangon | Phone: 09-976150646 Opening Hours: 12:00 AM to 10:00 PM (Mon-Thur), 10:00 AM to 10:00P PM (Fri-Sun)

Authentic Sichuan Cuisine

Si Chuan Dou Hua Chinese Restaurant @ PARKROYAL BY TWINKLE WHAT IT IS Unlike most Chinese restaurants in Yangon, Si Chuan Dou Hua designed to quiet and elegant. Delicious and authentic Chinese food is on offer from an all you can eat serviced buffet. ATMOSPHERE Classical style tables and chairs are set comfortably apart from each other, with a background of peaceful Chinese music. It gives a feeling of being in a royal palace. Even though it is a buffet dinner you are not required to walk around to pick up your own food; you order from the menu and the food is brought to your table. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. RECOMMENDATIONS We began with the special Eight Treasure Tea, prepared by a very royal-looking tea pourer, and with lots of ceremony. As I’m not very familiar with Sichuan food, I asked the waiters to suggest a couple of dishes. Condiments of steamed peanuts, and mixed vegetables in sauce, were offered to taste as we waited for the food to be served. This took a while but was well worth the wait. We ordered the excellent Black Fungus Salad, consisting of marinated black mushrooms with some chill to cleanse the palate. Next, was the famous Sichuan Hot and Sour Soup, and additions of melt in your mouth dumplings, and some very good tofu. My favourite was Steamed Fish Fillet with Soy Sauce, which was tender and succulent. My partner loved the Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil. FINAL THOUGHTS This place is well worth trying for anyone who loves quality Chinese food. It doesn't have strong MSG flavor so common with a lot of Chinese food. The only fault was the length of time it took to serve the dishes. At US$33 per person, it is very good value for such outstanding food. There are no drinks included in the price except the tea. I would recommend Si Chuan Dou Hua for that perfect dinner retreat. PARKROYAL Yangon, Level Two, 33 Alan Pya Phaya Road, Dagon Township, Yangon. Phone: 0678106088 Opening Hours: Lunch- 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Dinner- 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM
