weekly guide
editor’s note Hello MYANMOREans Its a Mother’s Day weekend. If you have mommy dearest here (how lucky!) you and can spoil her with our list of ideas for Mother’s Day. If you can use all the ideas at one go, it would please me so much :) If she’s not here with you (how lucky!) she’s only, as they say, a phone call away. Or email. Or text. Or skype. Subject to the usual power failures, of course. But you know at the end of the day, perhaps all she wants is to hear from you. So go on, make her day! I noticed that event-wise there hasn’t been anything too exciting going on the last few weeks. Despite that, I still see certain venues that rocked ‘til late. These are usually the best - everyone just having their own unplanned fun. We’ve also included here a Live Music Guide. This scene is growing and this is definitely not all of them available in Yangon. If you do know of more venues with live gigs, do let us know. For sharing is caring.

mother's day special
MOTHER’S DAY weekend This Sunday, being a rest day, is also Mother’s Day. We know how hard it is to find ways to pamper and show this wonderful lady how your love and appreciation. Don’t stress – here are 6 ideas to make this day special.
1. TREAT HER TO A MEAL
Treat her to a big Sunday brunch, lunch or dinner buffet with international cuisine and free-flowing beverages. Some hotels have a Mother’s Day cake, flowers, competitions, live music and many activities thrown in.
2. BUY A UNIQUE GIFT ONLINE
Pretty up her home with a unique home décor piece sourced from around the globe. Just a click away at wallfloors.com.
3. TAKE HER TO AN ORGANIC MARKET
Do something different. Who says you only have to be nice on Sunday? Do it a day earlier and surprise her with a trip to a fruit and vegetable market that sells organic and chemical-free produce called Safe Farms market, open every Saturday early morning at Myay Padethar Kyun, near the Garden Mart and Education Center, Bahan Township.
4. SURPRISE HER WITH A CAKE
Have a specially-made Mother’s Day Cake, just for her. Complete it with her favourite fruit and flavours, and surprise her in bed with a huge “Happy Mother's Day” wish! MYANMORE CARD
5. PAMPER HER WITH A SPA
Spend a whole day being pampered from head to toe starting with a head and aromatherapy massage, a foot spa and finish it off with a medi-pedi treatment.
6. SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
There’s nothing that melts a lady’s heart than a big bouquet of her favourite flowers and a written card that says “I love you, Mum.”

LIVE MUSIC GUIDE BY LEENA SALIM
Live music can refer to many different things; it could well be some jazz in a lounge café, a pop band in a bar or a punk rock stage concert. Whatever you are looking for, the best way to stay informed is to sign up to our twice-weekly newsletters or grab a copy of our weekly guide. in conversation with Leena Salim chats with Mario Ebanks in between mouthfuls of 7th Joint’s Jerk Chicken and imbibing copious amounts of their very own concoction of whiskey and coconut juice. TELL US ABOUT YOU. I am an entrepreneur from Jamaica. My background is in telecoms, an industry that I’ve been associated with for more than ten years. 7th Joint Bar & Grill is my first serious attempt in the Food and Beverage industry. My personal mantra is that everything happens exactly when it’s supposed to – no coincidences. I am into music, traveling, hanging out with family and friends, and chatting to anyone who is up for a good conversation (especially if we are both thirsty). WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO YANGON I came to Myanmar in January 2013 as a Project Manager for one of the Telecoms company WHAT IS THE CONCEPT OF YOUR BAR AND WHY DO YOU THINK IT WORKS It’s a Reggae bar. This concept is quite popular globally but has picked up significantly in this region. There are many reggae bars in Thailand and Malaysia and now the first in Myanmar. The atmosphere at our bar can be described as easy, chilled, relaxed, and some people say plain lazy. We think that this type of setting will appeal to tourist, hardworking expats seeking a place to unwind and nationals alike. WHAT DOES 7TH JOINT MEAN We didn’t choose the name, the name chose us, and we couldn’t get away from that name even if we tried. The initial plan involved seven partners. In addition to that, one of our partners has Chinese roots and the number seven or “qi ”¯for him symbolizes “togetherness”, which is exactly how we needed to be to get the bar up and running. Also, whenever we spoke to anyone about our plans in the setup stages, the typical response was that we are operating a business that is new to us in a foreign country and it’s a big gamble, hence lucky number 7 in the mix again. For “Joint”, let’s just say that “Joint” is a really popular word in Jamaica. WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN TERMS OF THE NIGHTLIFE IN YANGON Over my 2 years here, I’ve seen a lot changes in the nightlife that I would describe as positive. There are numerous options that offer a wide variety where dining is concerned. As it relates to music and entertainment, the rate of change is slow but still positive, salsa and reggae is now available, the DJs at some of the more popular places have expanded their scope and are now selecting from a wider genre, and there is live music on selected nights at different venues, including ours. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL CHANGE IN 2015? For Myanmar, I think we will continue to see more businesses opening in the F&B industry with some of the more popular food franchises entering the market. Also, there is definitely a chance that there will be more music festivals and concerts with performances from foreign groups or bands. I really hope to see a sharp increase in the number of people listening to reggae music and eating Jerk Chicken.

HUMMINGBIRD
AFLUTTER WITH FLAVOUR BY ZARA DANG
WHAT IT IS The Yangon food scene is humming with news of last week’s grand opening of this new restaurant. The founders’ goal was to provide fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere, and they accomplished it beautifully. The New Zealand chef has worked at five star hotels around the world and draws a lot of inspiration from his time in Belize. Finally someone is cooking authentic Latin American flavours in Yangon! ATMOSPHERE The three-story colonial building has been lovingly renovated using mostly reclaimed and repurposed materials. They’ve preserved as much of the original charm as possible, showing off arched doorways and stained glass windows. The wooden decor and light fixtures create a warm light giving you the feeling of sitting in a cozy living room, rather than a restaurant. The ground floor offers a peek into the kitchen and seating for 42 people, the first floor has a lounge feel with a bar and inviting sofas, and the rooftop garden will have a covering so you can still enjoy the outdoors during rainy season. RECOMMENDED The bartenders mix up creative concoctions like Smoky Rosemary and the refreshing Lychee Lemongrass Smash. The food menu is divided into tapas, appetizers, main courses, and a short but decadent desert list. We kicked-off with the Red Snapper Ceviche that has a pleasant balance of tangy citrus and meaty snapper. Next were the Beef Empanadas which are spot-on with perfectly spiced meat inside a delicate pocket of fried dough, served with a side of smooth mango dipping sauce. The never-frozen New Zealand steaks are the best I’ve had so far in Yangon, cooked exactly to the doneness you request with a choice of Chimichurri or Hollandaise sauces. The surprising dark horse was the Locro, an amazing Argentinian stew of beef and vegetables so savoury and hearty that we nearly licked the bowl clean. The complex spice mix features the smoky taste of chillies without any of the heat, allowing you to really explore all of the flavours. For vegetarians, the curried quail egg are a nice choice, but the chef will also make vegetarian dishes on request. Let your server know if you have dietary restrictions at your table and they will happily come up with something special for you. Leave room for the banana fritter with caramel sauce, you won’t be sorry FINAL THOUGHTS Hummingbird is a must-visit and we bet you won’t be going there only once. The good news is that the founders are also thinking about opening a bakery, catering service and a few other restaurants, so we have several other things to look forward to. 76 Phone Gyi st, Lanmadaw Tsp | 09 250 292 074 Opening Hours : 12pm – Late
