review

Gloria Jeans for Great Coffee and Prime PeopleWatching BY ANN POULTER Yangon is lacking in the sidewalk café scene, so when the chance arises to sit in rows of tiny tables chock-a-block with chattering, smoking, scenestealing Yangonites, it might not be Paris, but it quickly becomes the hangout du jour. A sojourn to Gloria Jeans at Myanmar Plaza is great for a meal as well as a drink, but it’s also for the ambiance: lots of see-and-beseen action and the best vantage points for scoping passersby to catch the latest Yangon trends. Myanmar Plaza is ground zero for shopaholics, but adding to the Kyatspending activities, savour a Gloria Jeans signature Voltage drink - double shot espresso mixed with vanilla and iced coffee. Alternatively go for something more familiar, mixed to your personal preference, then relax with the see and be-seen crowd. The terrace is the perfect vantage point for scanning the scene along the central artery of this neighborhood that feels more like a multicultural highway. That too is also why Gloria Jeans stands out; the diversity of its clientele. Open from 7am to 11pm business gents, celebrities, students on their way to/from the hip-and-happening places and clubs, and of course the hipster gay community all pass through the doors to have Gloria Jeans serving up to 400 beverages daily. A big draw, and a rarity in cafés, is their menu featuring fresh salads and tasty dishes in filling portions. Try the Burmese Chicken Pesto Spaghetti, Chicken Tikka Wrap or Penywort salad and you’ll see what I mean. It’s little wonder when you hear that their repat Chef was trained in Middle Eastern 5-star hospitality establishments. It was in 1996 when Nabi Saleh, an Australian businessman, coffee lover and expert, together with his business partner, Peter Irvine, set their sights on bringing specialty gourmet coffee, Gloria Jean’s Coffees to Australia. Their simple ambition was to be the most loved and respected coffee company worldwide. By 2004 Gloria Jean’s Coffees had opened more than 200 coffee houses across Australia and become a national brand. With success accomplished at home, Nabi and Peter set about achieving their vision to make Gloria Jean’s Coffees a successful global brand. Ground-floor, Myanmar Plaza (HAGL Myanmar Centre), Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, Yangon. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gloria-Jeans-Cofee
