De’ Burmese: Sophisticated Myanmar Cuisine in Bistro Environment BY SAM FOOT Sanchaung’s newest eatery offers cultivated, fresh regional Myanmar dishes in a chic, bistro environment at an extremely reasonable price point. Based in a fashionably renovated traditional two-floor building. The menu provides everything one would want from a Myanmar restaurant, yet adds a touch of class. Traditional appetizers - snacks, salads, soups - may be followed by lovingly crafted, authentic curries, noodles and rice dishes. The set main courses are likewise delicate and finely-tuned - a marinated chicken with tea leaf, a ‘jungle style’ curry, and sour and spicy Mon chicken legs - each served with rice and two authentic vegetable sides. These are dishes for those looking for warming, fragrant and homey fare. The sauces of each dish being a well-balanced combination of their components: a fine example, the jungle curry is served in an almost soupy gravy of winter melon, rosella leaves, fish paste, and bamboo which hints both at the care put into its preparation and the generational knowledge of flavouring of De’ Burmese’s cooks. Something not to miss out on is De Burmese’s signature dish, ‘Burmese Fried Chicken.’ This is fried chicken quite different from the more familiar greasy, salty variety. The chicken is marinated to perfection in tamarind and tomato and then dry fried to achieve a delicious barbeque-style flavour ideal for more carnivorous diners. Complementing its food, the restaurant also offers a comprehensive list of classic Myanmar desserts - including faluda, iced kacang, and the sweet, milky, coconut flavoured shwe yin aye. Drinks include a selection of fresh juices, tea, coffee, and, intriguingly, a choice of 90’s Burmese classics! As with the food options, drinks and desserts are exceptionally well priced for their quality, making De’ Burmese a great option for those wanting to drop in for a quick chat and catch-up. Highly recommended. Address: No.52, Kyun Taw Road, Sanchaung, Yangon Ph: 09 795 159915 Opening Hours: 7:30AM — 10:00PM

Charm 66: Heaven for Meat Lovers BY SOFIA RAINERI If all you can eat meat is your version of heaven Charm 66 is not to be missed, the only Brazilian churrascaria in Yangon, located in the South Okkalapa Township. The only choice on the menu is the Churrasco Buffet, an all you can eat meat feast, which is currently priced at only 20,000MMK (from 35,000MMK). Churrasco is traditional Brazilian BBQ, originating from the Southern Region of the country. In Brazilian BBQ not only is the quality of the meat extremely important but also the way it’s cooked: slow roasted so that it remains succulent and juicy. In a churrascaria, various cuts of meats on skewers make their way around tables, each server presenting a different one, you are then asked if you would like a piece, or two (or three) and all you have to do is nod. The meat is then sliced off the skewer onto your plate for you to savour. Before you know it, your plate is heaping with delicious meat and sometimes also fish. Alongside popular Brazilian churrasco cuts, the salad bar is extensive and provides a refreshing break from the meat. Nonetheless, I was immediately comforted when I saw the farofa with bacon, reminiscent of a drier couscous, almost breadcrumb like, it can be eaten on its own or sprinkled on the meat so that all the juices are soaked up. Amongst the various cuts of meat, I tried: the alcantra (top sirloin), the chicken thighs, the beef hump and the sweet pork, all were delicious, however my favourites were the Picanha, a tender rump cut, sliced in thin sheets, still pink in the middle, and meaty, melt-in-your-mouth pork ribs. The service at Charm 66 is fantastic, the waiters are attentive, ready to refill drinks, sauces and provide you with unlimited amounts of heavenly Pao de Queijo (doughy cheese balls). Unfortunately, even though the meal was fantastic, I found the atmosphere and dÊcor of the restaurant a bit of a let-down. Address: No . (66) Waizayantar Road , South Okkalapa Tsp , 11091 Yangon, Ph: 09775555266 Opening Hours: 5-11.30 PM
