TO REMAIN OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE The choice to call it ‘River’ might refer to the strength of a stream fraying its own path, or rather perhaps to the role played by water as an essential element of a pulsing city. Whichever reason gave its meaning to River Gallery, one thing is sure: It is located close to Yangon River, a symbol of the former capital. The first space, River I, opened in 2005 inside the Strand Hotel. The history of the building combined with the always-changing audience curious to discover and even collect art from Myanmar seemed a perfect location to start a gallery as a foreigner. The first location was followed in 2013 by a second venue much more appropriate to host contemporary art; a true ‘Cinderella-story’ regarding the space which probably never even dreamt of becoming so beautiful again. From the authentic Downtown street one enters now into a space marked by pure lines but which also rhymes with the colonial atmosphere of the Strand. The huge walls awaiting the works look suitable to back up the emerging talents. Gill Pattison, owner of River, had always a good relation with art however not at a professional level. She loved discovering interesting works and having long conversations with artists. What changed her life was the 2004 ASEAN Art Competition when Myanmar was unexpectedly excluded, while most of the artists were ready with their works. As a response, she helped to organise a national art competition showcasing these particular works on the top floor of a big Yangon tower. It made her realize how much the art scene was in need for more places dedicated to art, and about only contemporary art. River became a new challenge in her life. Gill Pattison follows her own beliefs as she says of her motto: Remain open and accessible to anyone. One of River’s speciality is to make openings memorable, usually combining the first moments of a show with a performance. The latest solo-show recently presented Than Kyaw Htay born in 1978 in Sittwe. ‘Mankind cannot live without water for even one morning’ is the proverb which announces his series ‘Silent Sweat’, raising awareness around the water issues in Rakhine State. The consciously repetitive motives on the paintings remind the viewers of the very difficult task of these families to access water every day. The enchanting backgrounds in which they live seem however diluted, blurred – they drive us to a land which ‘history is gradually evaporating, rubbed away by time and a lack of care’ states the artist. Gill Pattison’s choices made her the owner of one of the milestones on the Yangon gallery scene, enabling also quite a few artists to step out into the international art circulation. The Hunger Games : mockingjay
Only in the movie business could someone sell such shoddy merchandise and expect people to buy it. If “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1” were an appliance, it would be a broken toaster that people would toss in the garbage. Except that analogy is too kind, in that “Mockingjay” would be half a toaster. It’s half a movie — half of a stretched-out, very bad movie — in which the most active thing Jennifer Lawrence gets to do is walk on different piles of rubble and look upset. First she goes to the rubble that used to be District 12 and looks upset there. Then she goes back there and looks around to get upset again. Later, she walks outside to see the rubble caused by the bombing of District 13. This upsets her, too. Otherwise, she goes and takes the air about as little as Bruno Ganz did as Hitler in “Downfall.” The second time, Jennifer — or rather, Katniss — goes back to the ruins of her home, she is with a camera crew making a short propaganda film. Katniss is now the face of the revolution, someone the president (a slumming Julianne Moore) hopes will inspire all the districts to rise up against the evil Capitol. This may sound like an exaggeration, but it’s true: A large part of “Mockingjay” consists of watching Katniss make propaganda films. Then we see the final cut. And then we watch as the rebel’s computer whiz (Jeffrey Wright, also slumming) tries to hack the films onto Capitol TV screens.
