throwback This movie The Old Man & The Damsel was based on a Hollywood movie Blue Angel starring Kurt Juergens. The actress’s name is Khin Than Nu. She won a Miss Union crown around 1960 and then became an actress. She also won many Myanmar film industry’s Academy Award several time. She is still alive and lives in Yangon. The Myanmar adapted version of this movie also starred Collegian Ne Win, another famous actor. One of the last old cinemas in Yangon is the Waziya Cinema in Bogyoke Aung San Road. This was called was Excelsior Cinema before nationalization in 1964. The government changed all cinemas with English names into Myanmar names after nationalization. On the 33rd street side of the cinema there used to be a shop called ABC Hirers. It hires out tables, chairs and cutlery etc. for outdoor functions. Also at a small shop at the front of the cinema was a milk bar called Golly Bar. We could get fresh chilled milk and ice creams there. There is a winding staircase, as one enters the building, to get to the Dress Circle on the upper storey of the auditorium. Many Hitchcock’s famous movies were screened at the Excelsior, like Psycho, North by Northwest as well as other blockbuster Hollywood movies starring Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, William Holden etc. Credit: Harry Hpone Thant & Bob Percival Yangon Walking Tours http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g294191-d4744105-Reviews-Yangon_Walking_Tours-Yangon_Rangoon_Yangon_Region.html

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK BY TERENCE CLEVE

WHAT IT IS Off the Beaten Track owners Brian and Nay Lin call the place a travel café. The idea is that you can talk to the owners – one a well-travelled, six-year resident NGO worker, the other a tour guide of 17 years – and meet with fellow travelers to discuss your future, or past, adventures in the Golden Land and find out up-to-date information about places that are, well, off the beaten track. ATMOSPHERE Mingling might not happen as much during this rainy season, but the hanging out does, sitting in the cosy, intimate, chilled out little huts. In the dry season, there are tables outside where people can sit together and get a bit social with strangers. Unplugged concerts and a B-movie night are also on the cards. OFBT has only been open less than three months so they are trying out different things. Kandawgyi Lake itself is surely one of Yangon’s most relaxed and beautiful spots. WHAT’S HOT The Burmese and Chinese food. The atmosphere and the setting, be it rain or, one would presume, shine. There’s a library and book exchange hut; packed with travel books, and novels from Dan Brown to literature. The owners are friendly, helpful, interesting, up for a chat. The service was also top. It’s a great spot to while away the hours with a book, to nurse a hangover, or to create one. WHAT’S NOT The Western food. It took forever to arrive. And when it did, the Cheese Burger came with the cheese, but not the burger. The Steak was doused in tacky sauce. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was medium rare. Brian says they are trying to find a second chef. They need to get one who can do Western food if they want to keep it on the menu. RECOMMENDATIONS The Asian food was fantastic, fast, and costs little more than at local restaurants. Brian recommended the Country Style Chicken Curry, and I’m glad he it. It was a liquid-y, yet incredibly flavoursome, spicy delight. It was not oily; just delicious. As was the Chinese Chicken Paprika. The Tea Leaf Salad was a well-done classic, though a little too prawn-y for some. The Tea Leaf Rice was like the salad, but with rice. And hot. There were six of us. The three who ate the Western food are not keen to return, those who ate the Asian food are. PRICES Entrée and Main with a drink range from 8,000Ks to 12,000Ks.
