WHAT IT IS
After months of refurbishments, Kohaku is now back in operations, shining and new. Located on the lobby floor of Chatrium Hotel, it now boasts two seiza-style private rooms named KIKU I & KIKU II, one family room complete with a huge wall-mounted TV, a higher dining table for 8 made of teak in the main dining area, and coming soon, guests can also dine in the veranda area outdoors. Kohaku has been reputed as one of the better Japanese restaurants in Yangon.
ATMOSPHERE
Decked with a modern contemporary outfit, it is pleasant to the eyes. It’s bright with splashes of red on neutral-coloured furniture. The staff, dressed in traditional kimonos, are helpful and friendly. The buffet spread is now (we suspect) trimmed down and does not have as many variety as back then. Nevertheless, all the usual suspects are there; sashimi and sushi, vegetables and meat for teppanyaki, soba and cold appetisers, tempuras and gyozas, miso soup, salmon skin and edamame, desserts and ice cream. The place fills up rather quickly on their first buffet weekend.
WHAT’S HOT
Freshness of all the food; the sushis have that extra moist in the rice; the meat is not dry. Beef, teriyaki-style or freshly-grilled, is tender and succulent. The seafood especially the snowfish, melts in your mouth. Handrolls are made-to-order. There’s no sign of the ubiquitous Fried Rice or Noodles seen at most buffets. The staff speaks well, are knowledgeable and are always around to assist, even with it being quite a busy night.
WHAT’S NOT
A few things that we consider teething issues of a new place but do raise alarm bells – flies and mosquitoes. Not many; but enough for us to notice and get slightly annoyed. The other thing is watermelon juice and the yoghurt juice that comes out from their drink dispenser is not cold; they’re in room temperature at best. This raises food and safety issues, especially where there’s dairy products involved. Another point, albeit a cosmetic one really, is that they’ve done away with the visually-pleasant and colourful Japanese-influenced plates. Japanese food just doesn’t have the same appeal when served on white plates.
