A Two - Storey Shelter for Art BY BORBÁLA KÁLMÁN
The young owner of Nawaday Tharlar Gallery (not to be mistaken with Nawaday Alley Art Gallery), Ko Pyay Way encountered the depth of the art scene through a year spent as a sort of apprenticeship period in Yangon’s Pansodan Gallery. After learning about the everyday life of a gallerist, Ko Pyay finally decided to make a big move in 2012 when opening his own space. The original location where he chose to start the gallery was Nawaday Road, not far away from the cultic Central Railway station, close to Downtown yet in a calmer area. However, the opportunity to move to a bright two-storey highapartment a few blocks away with more free walls to unfold the secrets of artseemed impossible to refuse. The Gallery is now is to be found on Yaw Min Gyi Street. The first floor of the gallery is reserved for exhibitions while above hides the collection: this is whereone is able to pick the favourite piece if not shown downstairs. Albeit the fact that some of his artists co-work with other galleries, Ko Pyay’s aim is to discover young talents and place them ahead of Nawaday’s program for a long term period, just like the artist recently presented, Aung Kyi Soe’s through his second solo show, ‘Travelling With Black Sheep’… A little touch of irony, spiced with allusions to strange human condition… The owner has quickly learnt how to manage his space and look for new projects. He has just recently contributed in organizing an intriguing show including some of his artists, first presented in Hong Kong at Nock Art Foundation. ‘Banned in Burma: Painting Under Censorship’ highlights art works that have been created between 1962 and 2011 – in December it will presented at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. The curators are Melissa Carlson and Ian Holliday in partnership with Ko Pyay Way and in consultation with Aung Soe Min from Pansodan. The exhibitions at Nawaday Tharlar – like usually in Yangon – last only about a week, but luckily the invitations for the upcoming shows are printed in advance, so the dates can be easily saved: from November 8 to 14 for instance a duo show will take place introducing Myint Soe’s and Aung Zaw’s abstract works. And don’t forget: every two months an Open Mic night awaits the brave ones at Nawaday Tharlar – a perfect occasion to mix artistic genres and music! Be the one to grab the Mic next!
