editor’s note Hello MYANMOREans You’d be spoilt for choice these next 7 days. I’m having a hard time myself trying to figure out which events to pay more attention to. But hey, as they say, the more the merrier. From the usual weekly events to new ones, from monthly appearances to concerts, from film festivals to art discussions - don’t you just love it when it gets vibrant like this? I gotta say, this time last year was the first time that I partied in Yangon. I remembered it still - the Oktoberfest. I was introduced to a few people I’d never met before, and a few hours @ Gallery Bar later, I was hooked. Fast forward a few months, I made that move to Yangon. Happy to say that these kind souls, most have moved on elsewhere, have now become firm friends. I will never forget times like those - a new place, new adventures, new faces. A new beginning.

MYANMORE RECOMMENDS: THE PURGE : ANARCHY The Purge: Anarchy is that rare beast – a sequel infinitely better than its predecessor. The story has echoes of George Romero’s classic zombie movies as a group of strangers band together on the streets of Los Angeles amidst the blood-curdling horrors of the Annual Purge. Young couple Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) are stranded after their car is damaged, mother Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and daughter Cali (Zoë Soul) are hounded out of their apartment, while lone wolf Leo (Frank Grillo) is determined to accomplish a personal mission. Together, they may have a chance of survival – but how far can they trust each other? The group dynamics are well played out, with Grillo excelling as the calm but mysterious Alpha Male who comes to the rescue with few words and plenty of well-directed bullets. The environment is rendered superbly, with a strong sense of paranoia pervading every space the characters inhabit. Well-timed moments of humour help to momentarily alleviate the gloom, but not for long. While the performances and script take events seriously and work wonders with selling the far-fetched premise to the audience, the movie’s style sadly detracts from any pretensions of realism. An abundance of slo-mo shots and generic jolts of non-diegetic music simply aren’t needed to reinforce the horrors of what we’re witnessing. An often horrifying look at a grim future, The Purge: Anarchy largely succeeds because it takes time to explore a society on a vastly wider canvas than its predecessor and give us characters whose fates we can care about. There’s still a huge amount of untapped potential in the premise though, which will require a lot of conviction and creative risk-taking in the franchise’s future instalments. KITCHEN INSPIRATION

review

VINO DI ZANOTTI BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA WHAT IT IS: You might know this place by its more common nomenclature: “That place on University with the giant white glowing balls out front.” Vino de Zanotti offers patrons a classic Italian fine dining experience that we all crave for once in a while—prompt and comfortable service, timely and wholesome food, a casual and upscale evening. The food is delightfully uncomplicated. Flavors are built around a minimum of ingredients, allowing the dishes to speak for themselves. ATMOSPHERE: There is indoor and outdoor seating available, with the latter becoming more of an option as the rains begin to die down. Given the string of lovely weather this past week we opted for the outdoor deck, which was still covered just in case. Soft lighting and faint jazz float around between attentive servings of wine and cheese. Inside, the atmosphere seems more boisterous; the brighter lighting and tighter walls, each adorned with balanced additions of pop color and modern art, make the evening chatter livelier. RECOMMENDATION: It might surprise you that the first thing we were instructed to try was their Pizza “Zanotti.” Really Daniel? You ordered pizza at an Italian restaurant? How trite. This pizza is styled in the “traditional” Italian way— thin, soft with a crunchy outer crust, and gently layered with a minimal amount of ingredients. The “Zanotti” has a duo of mozzarella and mascarpone cheeses topped with Parma ham and cherry tomatoes—thinly sharp saltiness bedded by a tender layer of lingering sweetness. We also tried their Branzino (salt crusted Sea Bass infused with herbs), which was served on a bed of roasted potatoes with mushrooms and olives. The lightness of the fish played well against the punchier flavors around it. Sadly the fish was a little under cooked for my taste, but I still found it enjoyable. We ended the night with a trio of desserts—Tiramisu, Creme Puffs, and Pannacotta. Of the three, the Tiramisu stood out as the clear winner. Dark cherries at the base brought out a little more richness and breadth that I typically find in Tiramisu. PRICE Mains start at around $30 and go up from there. Pizza and Pastas are closer to $20

ARTIST profile Aung Htoo Aung Htoo (born 1985) studied art in Yangon but soon struck out from the conventional images taught. Many of his paintings feature spilled paint, and play with transparency, borders between colours, the way paint flows. Another favourite subject is water, where he explores surface and depth.
