This early 1970s propaganda-style postcard celebrates Union Day. Judging by the flag it would be pre-1974 before the new Socialist oriented flag was adopted instead. This flag has the white star to symbolize the Socialist revolution In 1974 a new State Constitution for the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma was adopted with the new flag honoring the 14 states and divisions symbolized by 14 pinions and 14 sheaves of paddy.Union day is a public celebration in Myanmar (formerly Burma) held every February 12 as a memorial to The Panglong Agreement (1947) which pronounced independence form the British government. . Aung San was assassinated on July 19, 1947. On January 4, 1948, Myanmar achieved its full independence. Credit: Harry Hpone Thant & Bob Percival http://opening-up-burma-travel.info/

50th STreet BAR BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA
WHAT IT IS It seems like the kind of place that just sells itself—an ageless icon that will hopefully escape the development boom; a place where regulars and wanderers alike stride in at the stroke of 5; a footrest for the weary; a meeting room for the busy—but it doesn’t. Like every icon, it needs the occasional reinvention. Yes, ‘reinvention’ is a rather extravagant word to describe an updated menu, but the gist is that the new menu offers items I simply can’t find anywhere else. And that keeps me coming back. ATMOSPHERE Part red-bricked-bar, part date-night-restaurant, part daily-pool-tableround-robin, this place is the closest thing to a local pub that we’ve come to find in Yangon. Sure, there are other joints hosting a similar combination of sports, food, and dark walnut wood furniture, but few of them manage to do it all as successfully. A nearly endless suite of events—themed parties, comedy and quiz nights, live music—keeps this well-worn watering hole tabbed in our weekly agenda. Also, the staff are some of the best in town. RECOMMENDATION For a starter, I recommend the Chargrilled Short Pork Ribs. The sweet chili and soy glaze is now topped with a zest corn salsa—a dash of Americana that gives the dish more punch. If you’re in the mood for something light, I suggest the Smoked Salmon Salad. A simple and effective combination of rocket, lemon, and feta keeps the dish snappy with every bite. And now the heavy hitters: As someone who loves pub food—calorie ridden concoctions of meat and veg and carbohydrate—the Beef and Guinness Pie sits atop as one of my favorite things to devour in town. Thick cuts of meat with chopped carrots and onion soused in rich dark gravy. The crust could be flakier, and a larger portion of mash would be nice to soak up all the leftover gravy, but one of these and a pint of Magners Irish Cider (which they now serve) and I’m a happy man. The Steak Sandwich is also a great choice. Topped with cheese, caramelized onions, beetroot relish and a fried egg, there’s enough going on between that bread to keep your taste buds occupied for at least an hour. If the Sausage Roll is on the daily specials, try it. One of the best I’ve ever had. PRICE Dishes range between 4,500Ks and 30,000Ks 9/13 50th St, Botahtaung Tsp (off Merchant Rd), Ph: 01-397 060
