LUCY Scarlett Johansson stars as the titular Lucy, an American grad student living in Taipei. As the movie opens, she’s being coerced by her shady new boyfriend to deliver a locked suitcase to a hotel where a cold-blooded Korean gangster named Mr. Jang (Choi Min-sik, of Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy”) awaits its arrival. Before you can say “poor life choices,” the boyfriend has been shot dead and poor Lucy is strong-armed by thugs and brought up to Jang’s suite. She’s to be used as a mule to transport the contents of the suitcase, a experimental new designer drug called CPH4, which promises to unlock those previously untapped portions of our mind and ostensibly give the user one hell of a high along the way. But almost immediately the bag containing the CPH4 inside her bursts, giving her an extreme overdose of the drug. And that’s when “Lucy” really starts to get nuts. WHAT IT IS: Located in the Ocean Shwe Gong Daing Shopping Center, Ginza Teppan-yaki offers diners the opportunity to watch a chef prepare a meal of grilled meats and vegetables in front of their eyes. They also offer a wide array of other Japanese cuisine, including sushi, sashimi, and tempura. Peculiarly, they’ve also included a separate juice bar at the front of their store, which is convenient, but oddly out of place. ATMOSPHERE: Truthfully, most mall restaurants suffer from a cookie-cutter brand of styling that makes the atmosphere feel superficial. Ginza is no exception. While a center flat-top grill provides some focus and amusement during the meal, the rest of the décor is rather dull. Perhaps in the interest of showing passersby the spectacle of having a chef cook your food in front of you, they’ve also chosen to replace the fourth wall that separates the restaurant from the rest of the mall with a waist high partition. This results in a very loud and discordant influx of pedestrian noises—not comfortable. RECOMMENDATION: The first red flag during the meal flew up when the meat for our Sliced Beef with Chili & Garlic Teppan-yaki (4,500Ks) and Salmon Teppan-yaki (7,500Ks) arrived nearly frozen on the flat-top. They proceeded to thaw while cooking, which, unsurprisingly, produced very tough and dry dishes, which were simultaneously bland and unremarkable. Moving away from the grill, we tried their Gyoza (3,000Ks), which was better prepared but also flavorless, their Miso Soup (1,500Ks), which tasted like Miso soup should, and a Fried Salmon Skin Salad (3,000Ks), which was like having fish flavored pork rinds invading an otherwise drab iceberg lettuce ensemble. Their one item of note came from the oddly placed juice bar. If you happen to be walking past this mall on an especially painful Saturday or Sunday morning, I highly recommend the Hangover Cure (3,000Ks). This sweet blend of fruits will easily go down when it seems like nothing else will.
FINAL THOUGHTS: They’ve only been open a month, so perhaps they are working out the kinks in their system, but something tells me this won’t unfold into anything of note anytime soon. The décor, the thawed meat, the flavors, the food—it all felt a touch lazy; as if someone said, “This will be good enough.” Except that good enough always becomes sub-par. Or maybe they’re satisfied netting the dawdling shoppers as they browse from one restaurant to the next in this glorified food court, because stumbling in on accident is the only way I’d ever find myself eating here again.
