ART SPACES
A GUIDE FOR THE EYESIGHt BY BORBÁLA KÁLMÁN The more time someone spends in Yangon, the more ‘hidden’ places will emerge – after long researches. If someone wishes to dig deeper into the art scene, whether it be to learn more about its history or to purchase an artwork, few recommendations exist to follow. The logical thought of starting the quest in museums gets tricky in Yangon as there is only one official institution to show a global aspect of the country’s culture, the National Museum. A painting gallery with important works awaits there for the visitor, however, leaving the immense building, one might think Myanmar artists have stopped creating at the present time. Not far away, Bogyoke Market is one of the ‘hottest’ foreigner-spots to find works giving surface to well-known genres, light topics and bright colours. But if you have already heard of the University of Culture and the State School of Fine Art, there could be a slight chance you would be interested to discover something deeper. Where to go? Galleries multiply these years, albeit their structure is somewhat atypical. Most of the so-called galleries and art spaces grew out of strong individual wills to make things happen on the art scene – they usually weren’t established by an art professional to represent a permanent circle of artists and to build-up their work. The lack of initiatives encouraged artists to open spaces specifically to show their own works. The ‘studio-like’ atmosphere is thus a unique possibility to meet the creators in person. Some galleries are rather simple spaces born to offer possibility to showcase art. It is still difficult today to exhibit, few spaces are configured to provide shows regularly. Lokanat Galleries was amongst the first ones in the early 1970s with the specific aim to be rented by artists. Some galleries organize workshops, talks, screenings – they take the role of the non-existing art institutions by providing visual education for students as well. Slowly, long-term projects unfold announcing a potential realignment and a solution to open towards the international market, important to stabilize the prices of the œuvres. Which galleries? Soon the reviews will tell.

Commemoration Myanmar Red Cross, mid-1970s. The young man pictured is Sai Aung Hlaing Myint who was from Myitkyina Red Cross. He rescued the driver of an Army truck from drowning by giving him mouthto-mouth resuscitation. The Army truck fell into the Ayeyarwady river near SAHM as he and his friends were sitting nearby. Sai Aung Hlaing Myint saw the driver trapped inside. The water was very cold, but Sai Aung Hlaing Myint dived into the water, rescued him and gave him CPR, thus saving his life, He was awarded the Henry Dunant Prize by the ICRC. He regularly travelled the country telling his story at local Red Cross training centers. He was considered a real hero. Sadly Ko Sai died of a brain tumor when he was quite young. The woman on the postcard is most likely the actress Nan Kalayar Hlain. Credit: Harry Hpone Thant & Bob Percival http://opening-up-burma-travel.info/

BOOK OF THE month The Fault in Our Stars John Green Following the success of Young Adult novels in Hollywood, the genre has become a gold mine for producers looking to cash in on the latest fad. In a sea of dystopian, science fiction romance novels comes a grounded title with plenty of heart. The Fault in Our Stars is John Green’s 5th Young Adult Novel, centers on the running theme of cancer. Our protagonist, Hazel, is a 16 year old girl afflicted with terminal cancer. She is going to die. While the subject matter may be grim, Green’s message reveals the true spirit of his novel. Hazel eventually meets Augustus (Gus), a cancer survivor, who may or may not be a potential love interest. Together they embark on an adventure of self-discovery and acceptance. While the Novel’s target demographic definitely focuses on the Young Adult genre of fiction, Green’s message of hope in times of despair will resonate with readers of all ages. YOLO!
