PORT AUTONOMY BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA
WHAT IT IS: The dining and nightlife scene in Yangon has made great efforts in this past year to develop authentic foods that appeal to the diverse array of expats infiltrating the city. Port Autonomy, located adjacent to the TS1 Gallery at Lanthit Jetty, represents the next move forward. Fusing Myanmar flavors with Western technique in a casual open air environment, it brings to Yangon something genuinely new without an over-designed pretense. ATMOSPHERE: Graffiti laden corrugated steel fashions a singular wall around which long bench seating and staggered palm foliage give off a tropical, almost Jamaican feel. High tables border the exterior walls, which utilize chain-link fencing in lieu of windows so diners can feel separated from, but still in view of, the bustling jetty environment. In the rear, food appears from the galley of a shiny stainless steel food truck. A part of me expects to find Baja Fish Tacos on the menu. Judging from the night’s sampling, that’s probably not too far off. RECOMMENDATION: Their current menu is limited (only six items), but that isn’t to say it falls short of satisfying. The most surprising item served was their Soft-Shell Crab Melt. Curried crab rests between green chili aioli, salsa verde, thick cuts of cheese and toasted panini. Biting through, your mouth is entrenched with the smokey flavor of charred bread, which draws out the robust notes within the spicy crab curry. The cuts of cheese, thick and gooey, bind each bite with sharp lingering savor. Their Hot Fried Chicken, topped with a ‘Burmese Buffalo Sauce,’ also impressed. It is served with a side of Dilled Ranch Dressing. The flavors bring me back to something from a small town in Tennessee. Crispy, succulent, with an unrelenting aversion to the limits of a healthy diet. Closed on Mondays. Opens from 5pm to 11pm Tuesdays to Sundays. BOOK OF THE month In an industry often dominated by western thought, setting, and characters, there are not many Authors who venture with storytelling in 3rd World countries. One such author, Khaled Hosseini, writes about his heritage, culture, and most importantly, the issues surrounding the complexity that is his country, Afghanistan. Following the success of his previous book, The Kite Runner, Hosseini released his second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. Whereas his previous book focused primarily on the lives of men, A Thousand Splendid Suns centers on Mariam and Lalia, the two female protagonists separated by generation, but related by circumstance. Both these women have been forced into an abusive marriage to Rasheed, a local shoe-maker. Through their trials and tribulations, the women bond over their common adversary, Man. While Hosseini claims the novel was not based on any one in particular, he does reveal that the events and characters portrayed, are an amalgam of the many women he had interviewed during his time in Afghanistan. What A Thousand Splendid Suns does is reveal a glimpse into the complex relationships between Afghan men and women against the backdrop of the Taliban’s rise to power.
