MYANMORE RECOMMENDS
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up a decade after the milestone events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, revealing a new world order in which genetically-enhanced ape Caesar (Andy Serkis) has successfully established an ape colony in the wilderness outside of San Francisco. With a family by his side and a tribe to lead and protect, Caesar feels content with the life he chose amongst his fellow apes. However, when evidence of humanity’s survival comes (literally) walking up to the apes’ doorstep, the situation changes quickly – and drastically. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was nothing less than a dark horse success story. It took an exhausted sci-fi property (which Tim Burton had already failed to reinvent for the 21st century) and gave it a compelling and moving restart bolstered by some revolutionary motion-capture performances – most notably that of actor Andy Serkis as Caesar. Well, it’s easy to report that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes everything great about the first film and kicks it up to a higher level, resulting in one of the best (and most technically proficient) films of the year. In short: This is the best film in the Planet of the Apes series, and a film that once again raises the question of whether or not motion-capture performers deserve the same awards considerations as any other actor. TEKE TEKE YAKITORI BAR & RESTAURANT 0 BY DANIEL ALEXANDER ROCA
WHAT IT IS Uncomplicated, straightforward flavours seem to be the motivation for this enterprise. Located near Kandawgyi Lake, TEKE TEKE serves authentic Japanese cuisine, boasting minimal ingredients that produce flavors to warm your body while gently teasing your palate. This is Japanese soul-food—earthy subtlety with a dash of pizazz, great for a long meal with good friends where homey food won’t get in the way of the conversation. ATMOSPHERE Simplicity is the theme, through and through. The modern décor mimics the ambitions of their food— comfortable, uncluttered and relaxing with slight embellishments to maintain interest. The kitchen is open and visible if you’re keen on watching the staff grill your yakitori, and several separate rooms offer privacy to those who want some. Sadly, our dining experience suffered from the singular Japanese pop song looped in perpetuity. Even after we asked for a change, none came. Their biggest hindrance, however, is their location. There are no prominent signs along the road that lead to its near-hidden location. However, asking a taxi to drive you to the German Embassy will almost certainly bring you to its door-step.
RECOMMENDATION The main attraction is the Mizutaki Chicken Hot Pot (20,000Ks). This hearty chicken broth comes with a side of raw mushrooms, greens, and minced chicken to plop into the pot as you wish. Build your meal around this, as the understated flavors, which might seem dull at first, will lull you into soft-bellied delight. There are options for a side order of noodles or rice to toss into the mix, which turn this pot of soup an all-out meal for at least two. Find your sharper, saltier flavors in their yakitori. We tried the Tsukune (ground chicken skewers, 2,500Ks) and the Negima (chicken and leeks, 1,500Ks). Though each order of yakitori only comes with two skewers, their portions are heftier than you might find in other grills around town. Chicken also seems their specialty—each different serving was succulent and juicy. However, we did find their Karage (Japanese fried chicken, 5,000Ks) a little bland and tasteless.
PRICE Yakitori dishes run between 1,500Ks -2,500Ks each. Expect to order a couple for a meal for two. Other side dishes fall in the 3000-6000Ks region. If ordering the hot pot, expect to pay anywhere from 25,00050,000Ks for a meal for two (with drinks included).
