TURBO DE’BAR & RESTAURANT DINING IN THE FAST LANE BY BEN HOPKINS WHAT IT IS Turbo de Bar is a newly-built, car themed bar/restaurant thought up and executed by restaurant proprietors and auto enthusiasts Mr Sai Lone Kyio and Ms Pauk Pauk. Not surprisingly, it attracts car lovers from all regions of Yangon who arrive for the exciting range of cocktails, comprehensive Western and Asian menu and friendly atmosphere. But if you’re not into cars, don’t be put off, all types are welcome, meaning you don’t need to know your way round a combustion chamber to find yourself at home here. ATMOSPHERE The central attraction is a 1960’s VW Camper Van sliced in half longways and transformed into a stylish bar. The other half of the VW is being kept in storage with plans to convert into a BBQ bar for the outdoor terrace. Black gloss décor, mirrors and soft leather seating lend a club like ambience, but the music is kept low, making it an ideal setting for intimate dinner dates as well as party group gatherings. RECOMMENDATIONS The car theme continues with the menu’s front cover featuring a dial on a petrol gauge pointing to empty. Inside, there’s the standard fare of European starters and main dishes including Baked Cheese Potatoes and Spanish Omelettes for starters, Mixed Grill and Barbeque Steak Fajitas for the main course followed by Crème Brulee for dessert. The Asian menu is more extensive, with Crispy Hot Dry Eel and Deep Fried Pork Balls in Thai Herbs as recommended starters followed by an interesting range of soups and salads. The main courses feature a choice of one portion stir fries as well as Thai classics such as Stir Fried Prawns with Pineapple and Sautéed Chicken with Cashew Nuts and Vegetables. All dishes are very reasonably priced between 2,500K and 5,000K with a couple of whole fish deals edging up to 8,000K. On the back page of the menu the petrol gauge reads, “FULL, GOOD TO GO.” Unless you’re thirsty of course, which you probably will be when you see the cocktail selection featuring old classics such as Singapore Sling and Mojito alongside original creations such as self-named Turbo De’Bar for tequila lovers and Seven Speed for speed freaks.
