weekly guide to yangon
editor’s note Hello Myanmoreans This is going to be short working month for most of us, it being a long holiday from the 12th to the 21st. Woohoo! As with a new month. we have also included a list of new openings. There are many, all for you. I just love this, to be in the midst of change. There are also a lot of new events for this week and next. Heat by YG, Martini Night @ MOJO, Jazz concert, Sai Sai’s live show.. the list goes on… This will be my first time being here for the Thingyan Festival so I’m quite excited about being splashed with (hopefully clean) water and being drenched everywhere I go. That would at least take some of the heat away.. Enjoy the weekend!

new opening KATANA JAPANESE RESTAURANT
WHAT IT IS Previously a golf shop, Katana is one of the latest in a spate of Japanese restaurants in Yangon. Situated in University Avenue road, it is the result of like-minded individuals wanting to serve a high quality cuisine in a fine dining environment with a reasonable price. A welcoming entrance faces an a glass window that highlights that kitchen area. A well-stocked wall-to-wall classy Katana Wine Bar is on the left and a sheltered outdoor bar area suitable for pre-dinner drinks is on the right, leading to the restaurant. Katana, a Japanese word, is an ancient long sword used mainly by Samurais, is displayed on one of the walls. If you’re expecting the chef to do air-slicing tricks with said sword, this is not the place. What you get instead is dedication from the chef, just like a Samurai to his katana, to his craft that is evident in thi establishment. ATMOSPHERE Katana embraces the Japanese tradition of keeping things looking clean and simple; white walls with strategically-placed down lights and contrasting dark furniture gives it a modern fusion of East and West sophistication. There are three VIP rooms, one with a seizastyle sitting. The staff are always smiling. RECOMMENDATION Whereas most of us are familiar with Kobe beef, Katana excels with its Kamui and Kagoshima beef flown from Hokkaido. These slivers of gems, together with Iberico pork, is best experienced as a shabu set. They say the best way to know a good quality beef is when it melts in your mouth; these just disintegrates gently into a savoury goodness your mouth. Another gem from the menu is the Collagen Chicken; chicken stock that took hours to boil, double filtered, frozen for a day to a jelly-like form. This blob of wonder is then used as a base for the hot pot. Besides the health benefits of collagen, it is very palatable. Worth mentioning too is the Hamburg Steak; imagine having a tender beef patty, without the buns – thumbs up for meat-lovers. PRICES Prices range from US$2 for Garlic Rice to $70 for Kagoshima Beef Steak. Prices for a new set lunch menu ranges from US$7 for Teriyaki Chicken Bowl Set to US$18 for Kamui Beef Bowl Set KATANA JAPANESE RESTAURANT 138C University Avenue Road, Bahan Tsp Tel: 01 400 842, 097 307 0892, Japanese: 092 541 11671 OPENING HOURS Mon - Sat: 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, 5:30 pm - 10:00 pm Sun: 11:00 am - 10:00 pm
