WHAT IT IS
The Sedona Hotel is one of the top hotels in Yangon, and has been since it was officially opened by His Excellency Lt. Gen. Khin Nyunt in 1996, a plaque out front reminds us. This buffet is excessive; Fabulously so. Be it meat, seafood, fruit, dessert or cheese, The Brasserie has too much of it on offer. There are carbohydrates, but who has time for them when you can let the taste buds trip through a veritable “best of” of European and Asian cuisine – from German sausages to pastas, chocolates to sushis, Thai beef salad to French cheeses, breads and desserts. As my vegetarian dining companion said; “There’s not much vegetarian stuff, but I’ll have no problem overeating anyway” – and she didn’t. The “not much” was most definitely relative, with her being able to take things from the pasta bar, soup, sushi, fresh fruit, cheese and dessert. It is simply not possible on one, two, or even three visits to try everything on offer here, as committed as one may be. Not just that, new dishes are offered each week. And don’t make the mistake we did and finish off four plates of fantastic-ness before realising there is also a barbecue outside with, what else, but even more of everything.
ATMOSPHERE
A rousing performance of Auld Lang Syne by lobby-turned-brasserie band 5 Mates that went out especially to the Chinese delegation was a definite highlight. But Asean delegates aren’t there every week – which truly is a shame – as one stole the show with what can only be described as a triumphant duet with one of the three tightly-dressed Filipino singers. The singers, who show no fear of a bit of a boogie, went on to deliver no doubt the finest, most passionate rendition of (Take Me Home) Country Roads that I have heard in Yangon. And that is saying something. Aside from that, the staff are genuinely friendly and simply excellent. The restaurant itself is spacious, clean and comfortable. A seat by the full length windows affords a view over the pool, and a thankfully-quiet construction site reminds us that Yangon is developing. As you would expect in a five-star hotel, the air-conditioning works. Bring a jumper or a shawl.
RECOMMENDED
Cheese. All of it. Goats cheese, gouda, camembert. With bread that taste like bread – indeed a rarity in Myanmar. If the sound of Duck Roulade with Red Wine Berry Sauce doesn’t make you feel happy, the taste most certainly will. The Sausage and Mushroom Quiche is a reminder of what marvels can be achieved when egg, pastry, butter and cheese are combined by knowing hands. No doubt, if you could stare into the knowing eyes of the piglet splayed on the meat counter, and have some its stomach carved off, your tastes buds would be rewarded. A single tear of joy and wonder ran down the cheek of my dining companion when she tasted the chocolate mousse. She proved herself up to the task of researching the entirety of the dessert selection, and was not once disappointed. PRICES | $38 includes a first soft drink, beer or wine $45 includes free flow of soft drinks, beer or wine
